I'm going to put in another vote for Guts. I kind of 'grew out' of most manga but Berserk is one of the very few where the characters are well rounded ideas, with real depth of character involved pasts and real human emotions and attachments. Guts works so well because of his emotions and his reactions towards people and enemies. I don't think a lot of manga portray real human personalities very well, in the short list of those that bother trying. There's too much emphasis on people being cool or crazy or edgy. I think if a character can be described in one word then there is not much of a character there.
