It's very hard for me to choose a favourite album but my I have been listening to With Oden on Our Side a lot lately.

I might have to choose Wintersun though, I have heard that album so many times and haven't gotten tired of it yet.

Everything Mastodon has cranked out has been fucking amazing... but my favorite is a tie between their first and last albums... Tool's Lateralus was awesome... And I quite liked Wrath by Lamb of God... um... I'll go with Crack the Skye by Mastodon as my final answer.

I'm not into "mic. gargle" metal, and about the hardest I go is some Mudvayne.

I've been listening to their new album constantly since I got it.

Metallica-Master of Puppets (It's either this or Ride the Lightening, depending on which you hear first)
Anthrax-Vol 8
Pantera-The Great Southern Trendkill (their best album, period)
Slipknot-Vol 3
High On Fire-Blessed Black Wings
Pelican-The Fire In Our Throats Beckon The Thaw
Deftones-White Pony

That's probably where I'd start. People have listed some other excellent albums (Toxicicity, Jane Doe, Astro Creep, Peace Sells) and bands (Sabbath, Sabbath, Sabbath). I'd probably add Soundgarden, Neurosis, the Melvins, Isis and Zeppelin.

For pure hate, I doubt there's anything as nasty as Tool's Anema, except for Slayer's Disciple.

But for anyone into metal, if you have the time I say go back and listen to what's been done. There's some amazing stuff back there and you don't have to wade through the shit.
/not hatin' on the new stuff
//just don't want to see the history forgotten
First, High on Fire completely rule and will destroy your ears live. Second, Tool's expression of anger is far more complex feeling than anything Slayer has cranked out. Volume=/=emotion. Slayer's still fun every now and then though.

Finally, there are so many good bands that have come out over the years that it's easy to neglect some, so while I'm not particularly fond of some of the bands you've mentioned (like Slipknot, Isis, and Deftones) I do respect the power and influence they've had in their respective genres/movements.

Their one album that isn't metal? (Don't get me wrong, Damnation is incredible)

For me my favorite would have to be "I" by Meshuggah. Just a 21 minute 1 song ep, but it blows my mind every time I listen to it.

Runner ups would be
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Sikth - The Trees are Dead and Dried Out, Wait for Something Wild
Strapping Young Lad - Alien
Between the Buried and Me - Colors
Devin Townsend - Terria
In Mourning - The Shrouded Divine
The Ocean - Precambrian

Hmm... Mudvayne's End of All Things to Come has to be my favorite.

If that doesn't count as metal nowadays then Lamb of God's Wrath should suffice.

Also would people STOP posting non- metal bands like Slipknot,Nine Inch Nails, White Zombie.
NIN and White Zombie are definetly not metal, and slipknot is marketed as "Metal" but its lack of narrative structure makes it Pop or Rock at best.
Did you even read the first sentence of the OP?

Exactly what it says on the tin, really, what's your favourite metal album(by metal, I'm covering a pretty broad spectrum, heavy rock, hardcore punk, etc, also acceptable.)

Nine Inch Nails is more close to electronic/industrial music than metal.

Also he said:

But it isnt what it says on the tin.

Because he said:

Might aswell turn this into a "whats your favorite album" or "Favorite Rock album", because whats the point of saying its a metal thread, and then going on into punk and other genres?
Don't start a flamewar about what is and isn't metal, please.
