Shit, I forgot Super Mario RPG. Possibly the closest thing video games will get to an acid trip. Tons of fun too.

Breath of Fire 2. eh.... I've been turned away from it on account of:
"Bums CL: It is clothes"

Hey, I liked Mystic Quest. Sure, it might've been the Arrow Flash of RPG games, but you can't deny it had a great soundtrack!

Harvest Moon kicks some major ass. I still play HM64 or HM:BTN sometimes.

In terms of a "traditional" RPG....I can't decide between Chrono Trigger and FF6. They're both games I play every couple of years just for the hell of it.

Super Mario RPG
FF6
Chrono Trigger
Live a Live [Very unique concept, reminds me of Contact and points]
Soul Blazer 1+2 [SoulBlazer 2 AKA Illusion of Gaia]
BoF2
EVO [Spore fans ahoy!]
Wonder Project J [I consider it an RPG. It's a really incredible game.]
Secret of Evermore
Tales of Phantasia
Dragon View [it's great once you get past the world map on crack]
Twisted Tales of Spike McFang [A rare game, and one of my favorites. One of the purest games I've ever seen, and actually has a fantastic hidden multi player feature...in an A-RPG!]

EDIT:

Also Zelda and Harvest Moon if you consider those to be RPGs.

How can no one have said terranigma?
In terms of storytelling that game absolutly kicked ass (better than FF6 even)
Plus the combat was pritty fun aswell.

Lufia is right at the top of the list. It was the first RPG I ever played and it holds a very special place in my heart. After that you've got Secret of Mana 2. You all know how I did it.

Chrono Trigger...never really had that fond of a spot for Chrono Trigger. It just never really appealed to me.

Jap RPGs and real RPGs are actually more like two different genres. I think they originally got lumped together by someone who didn't really understand the difference, just saw that both had hit points, magic, and level progression.

How many computer games actually do that? If you want actual roleplay, try a MMORPG, or even better, tabletop.

Computer rpg's are perhaps more *precisely* defined as "interactive story games with a character building mechanic" and you can "roleplay" insofar as the interaction of the game and the story, but yes, asking if these games allow you to RP is a bit like asking why real time strategy games are about tactics, not strategy, the naming nomenclature shouldn't be taken too literally, and doing so is merely a good way to nit[pick the games for what they are not good at rather than enjoying them for what they are good at.

Holy hell, I never thought I'd find another person who played that game! I absolutely loved it. I heard it had a sequel, but I never found it. :(

Isn't Terranagima the sequal-ish, or set within the same general metaverse, at least?

" If you want actual roleplay, try a MMORPG"

I don't know about that.. I'd say the only role you play in an MMORPG is that of the sucker paying $15 a month.

But, I agree with you for the most part, that is, enjoying games for what they're good at, rather then what genre they get lumped into. If you want REAL role-play, go join a civil war reenactment.

I'll grant that no MMORPG I've ever seen has been friendly to roleplayers, but you can find roleplay. I found Roleplay in WoW, on RP servers, in a chat channel for RPers. So on and so forth. Back in the day, the friendliest place RP wise was the MUD environment, actually, and their still around, playing Gemstone 4 is probably the closest to a tabletop serious role playing community experience your going to get online.

Final Fantasy 6 (3 in US), if only for Kefka. That guy still is the greatest bad guy in video gaming history, in my opinion.

My brother liked Chrono Trigger, but I could never get behind it myself.
