As part of my IB English course I have to make a presentation on a book that was made into a film (fair amound time till have to start work on this); I'm still deciding what to do and thought I should find out what books2films you guys and gals like.

BTW I was thinking of doing Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep but I wasn't too sure as we have covered this in class; part of the three books2films we cover to show us how to do it for our own presentation. Thing I kinda want to do one no one else in the class is going to do; then again I want a good mark and I can say a hell of alot about DADOE and Blade Runner (I think it helps that their both quite different).

(Or Mistborn movie, c'mon Brandon...)

I'l use the one that immediatly came to my head.

Let The Right One In. Both the book and film are brilliant and although they cut quite a few parts of the book, they still managed to keep the story and the feelings/emotions of the book.

I've never actually seen any of the films, except Equilibrium, which is sort of based very loosely on it. But Nineteen Eighty-Four.

The Lord of the Rings and the forthcoming The Hobbit. Also, series that should be made into a feature film or at least a television series is The Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Eriksson.

Hood's Balls thats a good choice!

Random fact Gardens of the Moon was originally written as a film script and later made into the book after it got rejected by numerous studios.

Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas.

I've never seen any film adaption that so perfectly captures the feel of the book. Both book and film are equally amazing.

If comics count V for Vendetta, two awesome books, and two pretty awesome films. But the differences in the issues they adressed was pretty massive, and the audience they were attracting was different also. And Darkly Dreaming Dexter, I was not looking forward to the TV show, but, whaddya know, it was damn near perfect.

I thought it was pretty stupid that most of the negative reviews for both that and the Rum Diary were that it was "nonsensical" and seemed too haphazard.

Lord of the Rings!
Read them all and seen the extended edition of them all.
One of the best book to film transistions ever.

Hmm... I think a good one could be Lord of the... Flies. There are two versions though, the older one relatively faithful compared to the newer one.

EDIT: Tried to make up a bunch of space with the return key but it didn't work so I'm reversing it so people don't go 'wtf' at the giant gap if they decide to quote me

Haha, I was sorting through some old books today and found my copy of that. Great book and equally good film. It'd be a good choice for the OP.

OT: If you love Philip K. Dick then I'd suggest A Scanner Darkly. Both book and film are incredible. I think the film captures the delirium and uncertainty felt by the book's characters really well. Both aesthetically and technically.

If you want to go for something really edgy and highlight the reasons why some books simply have to be changed for the big screen, I'd go with American Psycho. I adore the book for it's surrealist satire on 80s yuppie culture and, although a lot of the book is changed, the film is brilliant too.

Also...Trainspotting. Another one that would definitely be deemed edgy, considering it's content. (Not necessarily the drugs. There are a number of scenes in the book that would never have even been considered for the film.)

Also, does it definitely have to be book>>>>film? I only ask because Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman was originally a TV series aired in 1996 on BBC2. It'd be pretty different if you were to take that approach rather than the traditional book to film adaptation.

A Song of Ice and Fire got made into a TV show. Does that count?
Haven't seen it yet, but it's supposedly really good.

I am a HP Lovecraft fan and recently a movie called the Whisperer in Darkness was released adapted from a story by the same name...and in my opinion it is the best Lovecraft film...as it does not include too much comic relief as is usually included in such films.

I guess PK Dick's stories have been made into movies more than most other genre authors. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep...while the story and Bladerunner only share some details....the dynamism of the movie showed how strong a visionary story can be adapted to visual form.

It does not count in the same way as movies...but I read(and am reading) the Song of Fire and Ice and enjoy the HBO adaptions(which are necessarily less grand than the books or else they would have the budget of 200 blockbusters each episode) I also love the Walking Dead...though I did not read the graphic novels.

There are a lot of films of books that I love but I haven't read the books. Like Fight Club and Jurassic Park.
But, of ones I've seen and read I'm going with Lord Of The Rings, The Time Machine (1960 version, obviously) Kick-Ass and Watchmen.

The worst one I've seen is The Golden Compass film adaptation of my favourite book, Northern Lights. What an outrage that film was!

The only one/s I can think of is Lord of the Rings. Althrough I think there are some awsome movies to be made from Jim Butchers series Codex Alera.

His other series The Dresden Files could work as well. They made a TV series based on them but it was only Dresden in name and was really crap.

And then there's the anime version... which is quite harrowing... after a fashion...

OT: le Comte de Monte Cristo... though no film has ever really done it justice, since it is damned hard to get those 1300 pages into just two hours (or so). An anime and a French language TV series (with Gerard Depardieu... the man's a brilliant actor, but by god he's got an arse for a face!) did a pretty good job of it though.

Not really fiction, but it was almost written as a novel-like recounting, but A Bridge Too Far by Cornelius Ryan... damned good book, and a pretty ass-kicking film (even if certain liberties were taken).

Now, I'm just waiting for someone to make a film version of Magician by Raymond E Feist (and it'd better be a two-part affair).

For some reason the only one I can think of is Animal Farm By Orwell. It would be good to crtique because the book is short if you haven't read it already, drenched in themes, and the film fails to do it justice in several areas (they change the ending so that Napoleon is deposed and the animals are freed, kinda missing the whole point of the books!)
