I know my sizes through free hand-me-downs (a mother and two older sisters) and having a soft measuring tape and references charts in case of weight gain/lose. I don't go to specialty boutiques for a few reasons: The expense, I'm not uncomfortable or in pain with the bras I do have, and I don't like being touched by strangers (or really most people - even if I know them). I usually find my size, buy it, and leave the store without evening taking a glance at the fitting room; if I can't find what I was looking for on the internet.
I don't actually shop for new clothes very often. Jeans and t-shirts for when in public, and pull-over sweatshirts and sweatpants in private are all that I require and can usually be purchased with little to no human interaction. The only thing I bought new (on sale) were two pairs of jeans, because I went from a huge size, down to a 'regular' size, even trying to wear my big pants with a belt looked silly - so it was really the only reason I conceded to buying new jeans.
However, the few times I have gone into the stores, I've found the women's numbering system for clothes - ridiculous. Unless it's a specialty store for Big & Tall, you'd think most 'regular' sizes would be pretty much the same; but they aren't. Some stores and brands have ridiculous vanity sizing issues.
