I'm one of those liberal doo-hickies who hates seeing stereotypes in games. Most notably in history thus far has been the woman character in games. They usually fall into the following three catergories.

The Man Eater: A Y-Chromosome hating she-warrior who is inevitably extremely busty, attractive, and dressed minimally to apparently sexually antagonize the men she despises. She will often times be "conqured" by the male lead or ambiguously have sex with him just because she felt the need to get laid (but no emotional attachments, no she's an independent woman!). Also, while being composed of mostly large breasts, buttocks, and the rest of her being rail thin and modelesque, she normally has super strength.

Examples: Lara Croft in the later Tomb Raider games, The cast of DOA, the females of Ninja Gaiden, almost all female villains.

The Damsel In Distress: Women who are powerless to fight back or accomplish anything on their own. So they look to the main character to come and save them or handle her problem. She will usually be the love interest of the main character and make him a prince or some garbage.

Examples: Princess Peach, Princess Zelda (in most Zelda games), etc.

The Innocent Youth: She's a little girly-girl who likes teddy bears and slaughtering her country's enemies in wholesale. She's always super-powered and capable of out-fighting men and monsters three times her size and age, sometimes with the assistance of a magical weapon, or just for no-reason at all. And despite to having an almost minimal amount of capable combat experience, she will know how to dispatch soldiers and professional mercenaries as if it were a game of Candy Land.

Examples: Talim from Soul Calibur, Annise from Tales of the Abyss, Ling Xiaoyu from Tekken.

Now, I find it pretty upsetting that it is impossible to build a believable and compelling female character. So far, all they've served to be are sources of either cute or T&A in most games, or as the brain-dead love interest of the protagonist.

However, there are some examples of great female characters. I won't list everyone in existance, mostly because I don't know all of them. But I will name my personal favorite and let others follow.

The Boss (Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater)

For me, The Boss is the most compelling female character in video games I have yet to encounter. She's a strong woman who does not follow the "T&A boasting man eater" that most strong women hold. On top of that, she looks as though she could realistically be a soldier of her calibur. She's grizzled with age and from the effects of war, but still maintains her woman-hood and her femininity (sp?). She's a lover (of The Sorrow, one of her team mates in the past), a mother (of [spoiler alert] Revolver Ocelot), a teacher (of The Big Boss, Naked Snake), a leader (of the Cobra soldiers), and in general a bad ass. She not only dispatches of her pupil, Snake and his biggest enemy, Volgin, but she does it in a manner that is believable. Instead of pulling out an enormous gun from nowhere or suddenly gaining super strength, she uses combat-effective CQC techniques to dispatch of them. All the while maintaining her nobility and finesse (never delving into 'Man Eater' territory).

In her end, she bears her scar of motherhood proudly, while facing her pupil and "second son" in some ways. And she dies the death of a hero, forgotten and remembered as a traitor because she was a true hero.

For these reasons and more (like just being awesome and her weapon of choice, The Patriot) make The Boss not only one of the greatest female characters in gaming, but also one of the greatest characters in gaming history period.

What do you think, everyone?

Those are especially annoying since they are always in another fucking castle.

But in serious-ness.. I agree completely with what you said, and I think you picked the best example.

And I'll /endtopic by saying..
Alyx Vance.

Best female character ever imo. Normal, not sexist.. Not un-realistic. And Valve has such talent to really make you feel connected to the characters. I feel like I could know her in real life, and I care for her safety even though she isn't real. When a game can do that, they've found the secret formula.

Half Life 2: Episode 2, first game to make me cry.
True story.

Anyone remember Jenny from the darkness, was she damsel in distress or what?

Also Cortana, technically she could pop into any group.

My vote for a good female character is Bastila Shan from KOTOR. But I definitely agree with what you are saying.
You know what's funny is I actually wrote a comment including her, then I thought of Alyx.
I just didn't want to write up both of them.. and I didn't have to because you mentioned it. Woot!

You forgot one.

The Spunky Tomboy: Generally found in RPG's, the Spunky Tomboy is usually the main supporting character. She tends to wear shorts and a very small top, always exposing the stomach area. Her motives include: avenging the death of her parents, wanting to support her best friend, the main character, who she grew up with. The Tomboy is quick to take charge of any situation, and is almost always competent.

Examples: Kid (Chrono Cross), Shiki (The World Ends With You), Aika (Skies of Arcadia)

My favorite female character?

The mother in pokemon.

No pretension, no unbelievable story or bullshit, she takes crap from nobody and her son has a lvl 100 Alakazam so powerful it practically violates the geneva convention.

That description makes me think of Rikku from FFX.

And she can heal the most grevious of wounds, all by just saying "you look like you could use a rest", it's like Atlas in Bioshock (I know, shameless Bioshock reference) saying "Would you kindly", except instead of bludgeoning Andrew Ryan's head in with a Golf club (sorry, don't know how to do the spoiler thing) she can heal all wounds... It honestly keeps me up at night (not in a weird way though, I'm not into that)

She has her own category,

That's a Girl?: A female character that shows no femininity or any signs of gender so that everyone assumes they are male. Being female is just an interesting tidbit the designers decided to tell you and has no impact on story, gameplay or anything else.

Not a big Metroid fan but I would agree.

Also, I hope if Kojima does anything with the MGS series in the future, he makes a game ala Snake Eater where we take control of a past character, this time being the Boss, during World War 2. That would be a dream title for me, heh.

So...wait a minute, so by definition you are saying that a character being female SHOULD impact on story, gameplay etc. yet get pissed when it is a typical impact (like the maneater/damsel/youth etc.). Just to place things in perspective, women aren't the only ones who recieve stereotypes in games, like men for example:

1. The cleft chin hero- Useually amounts to purely being a guy who is good with guns, more recent games may include a sordid history to brood over just for dramatic effect (eg: Marcus Fenix, Master Chief, Serious Sam, Duke Nukem...the list goes on) there will also be (more than likely) jokes surrounding their intellegence (made by their female support character).
2. The voice in your head- can also be (and sometimes is) female but has prominent enough male examples to have mention here (Otacon), the main purpose of these fellows is to scream down your ear piece when things go wrong and to give you a constant update to your 'to do' list.
3. The villain- That generic evil guy who will often include most (if not all) of these properties 1. psychotic/sadistic/masochistic 2. hatred of the hero 3. evil scheme will one blatant flaw 4. is delightfully insane and 5. superiority complex. examples being: Volgin (MGS3), Liquid Snake (MGS1), Dr. M Betruger (DOOM 3), Atlas/Fontaine (Bioshock)

This is not me disregarding the entire issue (far from it) what I am trying to say is look on both sides, for example, here someone made the issue that female stereotypes in games are restricting (which they are) but you have to realise that male stereotypes aren't much better (other than the single bonus of being the protaganist most of the time).

Please don't sue me

Shodan, one of the best villains ever, also a great female role.

But I'd say Grace Nakimura from the Gabriel Knight adventure game series is my favourite female video game character.

Yukolaili from Bards Tale. A princess who actually knows how to get a man to set out on a massive life risking adventure. Anyone can tell some mute kid in a green hat to sail half way across the ocean for an unattainable love interest, but it takes a real mistress of persuasion to get a greedy, self absorbed dick to put himself on the line. "I can read your mind, now picture that three times a day"
"Where do i start?"
