The Damsel In Distress: Women who are powerless to fight back or accomplish anything on their own. So they look to the main character to come and save them or handle her problem. She will usually be the love interest of the main character and make him a prince or some garbage.

Examples: Princess Peach, Princess Zelda (in most Zelda games), etc.
Those are especially annoying since they are always in another fucking castle.

But in serious-ness.. I agree completely with what you said, and I think you picked the best example.

And I'll /endtopic by saying..
Alyx Vance.

Best female character ever imo. Normal, not sexist.. Not un-realistic. And Valve has such talent to really make you feel connected to the characters. I feel like I could know her in real life, and I care for her safety even though she isn't real. When a game can do that, they've found the secret formula.

Half Life 2: Episode 2, first game to make me cry.
True story.
Agreed, on the Alyx thing and the HL2 EP2 making me cry thing.

Anyone remember Jenny from the darkness, was she damsel in distress or what?
Actually, I found Jenny a pretty believable character in The Darkness. Granted, she had a bit of a Damsel in Distress moment when
Paulie blows her brains out right after you see half her back story
but she was played believably, and had me genuinely angry after the above scene.

I wouldn't say that these are outright sexist, so much more that they are cliches. I mean, a large majority of male characters in video games are cliched/stereotyped.

Likewise, being a cliched or stereotyped character doesn't necessarily make you a bad character either.

I really liked Jenny in The Darkness though she did not do much. Mitsuru from Persona 3 is also a nice character.

I would just like to say I would like to see more female main characters, I'm just tried of male perspective all the time and being a male myself doesn't help.

Just would like to see whats over the fence sometimes.....

Oh and love Alyx Vance, but I felt being Gordan's love interest was pushed a little, just slow down girl or damn, being mute must be very attractive.

April Ryan from Longest Journey felt the most real out of any female character I've played, I also don't mind Dawn Star from Jade Empire. Of course there's also Tifa and the absolutely stunning Vanessa from PN03.

well, for my favorite i'd have to say Alyx Vance, she's the only video game character i genuinly cared for, or felt emotions towrds.
I definitely agree with Alyx, as she is the only character in a game I have felt any emotion towards except anger (because they're annoying). Also, I would like to suggest Carla Valenti from Fahrenheit.

Alyx Vance from the Half-Life series and Jade from Beyond Good and Evil are my two favourite female video game characters. Neither of them are very tough but they are both very believable and lovable.

So... how 'bout that bug collector girl from Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess?

Isn't she just... creepy.

...for all intents and purposes Samus was gender neutral. More like a robot than a person. I didn't know she was a girl until Super Smash bros brawl.
That's not really the designers' fault. The old Metroid NES game shows you that Samus is a woman (by removing the suit in the end scene) if you beat the game fast enough. So it's not just something they tacked on later in the series, it was part of the original concept for the game. I think i remember reading somewhere that the designers decided on it just to try something different.

Mrs. Pac-man may have Samus beat, but I'm not sure. Then again, I've always had a sneaking suspicion that she was really just Pac-man in drag.
