If there is one thing the games industry has got a lot of it's really beautiful women. They come in droves swamping the place and like a virus have spread to pretty much every genre. They are in fighting games (their equivilant of a home base really), action games, Rpgs, adventure games, sports games... pretty much everything. Naturally wherever they go young hereosexual males follow with stars in their eyes and their tongues rolled out onto the floor.
But I would likt to take the time out to consider the female protagonists that do not possess supermodel-esque good looks, instead the ones who just look normal, maybe even slightly unattractive but who is liked nonetheless. The kind of characters who instead charm you with say, their wit or personality. Let me give you an example of what I'm talking about with a simple example:

Ashley from Mass Effect. She is actually the most realistic depiction of what a tough female character who is equal to the men would look like if you ask me. Sure she has a slightly boyish face and thick eyebrows to some degree but regardless of her 'butch' looks I found myself liking her (to the dgree where she became Mr. Shepard's lover) for two simple reasons:
A. She's very witty and bold enough to speak her mind
B. She looks a lot more like a real person rather than a charicature.
Someone once pointed out that she has racist tendancies. I disagree to an extent, she's not completely racist she just has issues that stem from her families history (plus you can convince her to change her views). But regardless of her major character flaw that's another reason I like her because again, she feels more like a person this way. With likeable qualities and dislikeable qualities. Looks don't make any impact.

Another prime example I think is Hammer from Fable 2. Again she really isn't pretty, infact she's got more muscle than any of the men in the game. But she's got a great sense of humour and a deep thoughtful opinion on the way the world works. She's philiosophical. A real tough and very likebale character all round.

In terms of charming personality I'd like to mention Cortana from Halo, some people might point out that yes, her frame has gotten 'sexier' in the last few games but I argue you can't find her attractive as technically she's a computer program.

But that's just me, can you think of any female characters who aren't neccecarily attractive but who you like anyway for their personality?

I think Alyx Vance is the epitome of this. She isn't at all unattractive, but you can tell that her being incredibly hot wasn't a priority of Valve's, and she's a better character because of it.

I'll agree (partially) with you on Alyx, and with Chell from Portal. Alyx is at least attractive, but Chell looks like a average woman.

I have much respect for Valve.

Jade from Beyond Good & Evil. She wasn't a drop-dead gorgeous bombshell vixen, and we couldn't have cared less.

Moira from Fallout 3.
I adore her psychotic cheerfulness. I'd walk through Minefield for her giggling joy.

Moria is the whole reason I blew up Megaton.

and she STILL didn't die.

on topic, I kind of liked Faith from Mirror's Edge. She wasn't exactly beautiful either.

I have no idea if this counts, but I feel that most of the female RE main characters aren't conventionally attractive, still hot in their own way, but not the way Hollywood shoves down our throats.

I loved Chell from Portal. She could be attractive. Who knows? she's wearing practical clothes and looks bedraggled. Maye outside with normal clothes and cleaned up she'd look pretty. The main reason I like her though is because she's not whining victim relying on some muscle bound bloke to come save her. She deals with her situation herself. It also helps tht she hasn't got her boobs hanging out.

Heather from Silent Hill 3 was an average looking female, though sometimes I got put off by her attitude that always seemed to be pretty abstract during important segments.

I think they made an effort with Ashley, but got it horribly wrong wih the ears. How can you say Ada is not conventionally attractive as well?
