Yes, that would be the one.

edit

I'm of the mind that Tactics is the real forgotten gem myself. And none of that A2 bullshit. I don't even know what sort of Bizarro world Ivalice that is.

Yeah, I think VI is more remembered and respected than IX, actually. More loved than VIII.

It is a fantastic game, and is no doubt, at the very least, the best Final Fantasy before the 3D era. It is the best example of good storytelling on the SNES in my opinion, and considering some of the RPGs on that system, that's high praise.

Oh, and...

12 has the best story...
... what? XII had an epic story of political intrigue, but it completely failed on a personal level. Only a couple of the characters were actually well-developed, the relationships between the playable characters were never really explored, and Vaan (supposedly the main character) was useless in the story. Seriously, he never did anything.

The gameplay was quite good, but especially after seeing the relationship dynamic in VI and X, XII just failed in the story department.

They did redo it on the PS1 (more or less unchanged), and on the GBA after that.

As someone who is playing through it right now, I can't agree that the story is that brilliant, though. It's certainly not bad, but...

It's been said many times that Vaan isn't really the main character, he's just the viewpoint so us unable-to-sympathise-with-anything-foreign whiteys can have a prettyboy teen hero to attach ourselves to. All of the other characters are more "main" thann Vaan, except possibly Penelo. And Fran.

...Okay so it's Basch, Ashe and Balthier's story.

Yeah, pretty much. :p I guess I just felt really unfulfilled by the end: I never really had a reason to care about it. I mean the story was interesting, so I cared, but there wasn't any feeling of joy or finality in it for me because I wasn't really in love with the characters like I was in VI, VII, or X.

i am not sure what this "little love" you are seeing that FF6 is being shown, but from what i have read on the internet it is loved very much. it has gotten plenty of love in the 2 ports it has recieved and a possible remake in the style of the FF3 and 4 on the DS.

FF6 was nice because you knew your main enemy the entire game. Compare that to FF8, where ultimicia comes out of left field and the third disc you are wondering which way the game went. Also FF6 pushed the limits on what the SNES could do. That game is pretty darn gorgeous. I still play it today on the ps1, and if I could get my SNES working again I would prefer to play it on that. PS1 loading times for the remakes was really bad.

I really like what they did with the FF4 remake. If it wasn't for a handheld system I might actually buy it. I think what we really want is a FF6 remake like that, where new stuff is added and everything is improved. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE FF6, but FF4 is my personal favorite.

ff7 etc have lots of spin offs cos the story was open ended and there were a lot of plot twists, same with ff10

in ff6 the story was pretty rounded so i dont know how you'd make a spin off from it

a remake would be nice but i'm pessimistic about it

It seems that i'm one of the few who liked FFVIII. I still have to beat both VI and VII though. As for XII, i couldn't get over the bad gameplay, and dropped it very soon....

It's really not that hard to understand where all the various love/hate comes from in regard to FFVI. When it was released as FFIII on the Snes, it was absolutely amazing, and RPG fans loved it. The problem was, RPG fans outside of Japan were a small fringe group, as can be seen by most of the JRPG's, and half the Final Fantasy games, not seing a release in North America. But for those of us original fans, I'm one myself, we usually see FFVI as the best... or sometimes FFIV.

Then FFVII came out, with it's fancy cut scenes and heavy advertisement, it earned mass appeal and the console RPG's went mainstream. For many of the big FFVII fans this was this was their first experience with a 'JRPG', and from that point on it was standard to translate and port them to North America. For the long time fanbase though apart from better graphics it wasn't anything new, and most still liked FFVI better.

So that's basically what you have, the RPG fans from the NES/SNES days favour FFVI, while the PSone RPG converts love FFVII first and foremost. But that was a long time ago now and both could be considered long time fans, so it kind of gets muddled.

I certainly don't think 6 is forgotten. While 7 is still my favorite, 6 comes very very close. 6's story, music and atmosphere were all outstanding, and Kefka's quite possibly the most demented villain I've ever seen in a game.

I still need to play through 9, and I will also agree with many of you that 5 is very underrated. The only complaint with 5 is that it's villain had a stupid name.

You know what I want if they remake VI?

That f#cking mech in South Figaro. Wanted to, badly, for there to be a way to kill the npc standing by it.

"Do you want a souvenir of the Empire?"

Yes, yes I do.

Does the jerk let me have it? No, no he does not. It sits there, taunting me, haunting me with my dreams of using it. Oh there was Doma castle, where I got to use them one final time for one fleeting moment, only fueling the rage I felt for that damnable npc.

"Do you want a souvenir of the Empire?"
"Yes, and I will use it to burn your world to the ground."

I had dreams where I finally got that thing, where I made use of magitech by slapping an esper in it as a powersource, and I waged war on a broken world with power beyond belief. I fantasized about slapping an Atma Weapon on the thing and having Edgar integrate tool into it. In my deepest desires I customized the hell out of that thing, and made it something more powerful than any of the legendary dragons.

But no, all I really got was an npc, who sat there mocking me. Taunting me. Asking me that same damnable question over and over again.

"Do you want a souvenir of the Empire?"

F#ck you, nameless npc, and the mech you rode in on.

All Final Fantasies are equally good in my opinion (except 11&12)
12 is far and away superior to 1-3 and 8.

This one. ^
I love ff5, its rather lengthy and the class system was ahead of its time. The remake for GBA was wonderful.
I loved FF6 too, but after you learn Ultima and Quick there is NOTHING that can stop you. (and Soul of Thamasa/Celestriad)
3 invented the Job System, not 5. 5 IS the one where it got perfected in though.
I do still like FF12 but there was something about it that made it worse for me, it may have been the music

I don't think it's quite accurate to say that FFVI is forgotten or overlooked. It's pretty much the go-to game for fanatics of the "FFVII was overrated" camp. In fact, the whole "Kefka vs Sephiroth" argument is still considered such a heated topic that even suggesting such a discussion is a bannable offense on many Final Fantasy related boards.

Personally, I think it's one of the franchise's strongest games, and I have a great deal of affection for it. If it were remade in the style of Final Fantasy III and IV on the DS, I'd be first in line to buy it.

That said, I don't think it's any better than FFIV, VII, VIII or X, my other favorite games in the franchise. I tend to look at them as separate entities, rather than competing elements.
