There won't be random battles and the battle system will be quite a bit different.
You'll have to give me a source on that. Nomura said he wanted to tweak the combat system (so I'm guessing similar to FF10-2 combat system, which I'm okay with, because it's just a more fluid version of 7/8/9s, but there should be a toggle.) I've yet to read anything from Square or Nomura directly that says they've removing random battles. I have no reason to believe they'd change the combat system so much that it wouldn't even resemble FF7, because that would stupid. FF7 has a pretty feverish fanbase and gutting the combat system is unlikely to go down well. I'd be pretty pissed if it ended up being like FF13 or 12 and I actually liked 12s combat system.
Sorry to come back after all this time but it literally made no sense that the FFVII remake would keep random battles or an old FF turn-based system. All the proof is out there now. The game actually looks like a game I could enjoy actually playing.
Did you just necro this thread to do a "told you so" on something you couldn't possibly prove or had any sources on at the time the thread was alive?
You ask me for proof, yet you had no proof yourself. Why would a new FF game have old FF turn-based combat when it's been over a decade since the last FF with that kind of a combat system? Why would a REMAKE be the same as the old game but with just better graphics? When the remake was announced, I didn't think for a second it would use the old antiquated combat system.
I'd suggest we continue this in the new trailer thread, just quote me in there and we'll carry on, lest we both incur the wrath of the mods for necroing :p

You outright stated there wont be random battles and the battle system would be different as if it was a matter of fact, I asked for a source on that, because at the time they hadn't said anything beyond "there will be changes". I wasn't directly contesting your claims, just asking if you had a source on it. I said "I don't believe they will change it" due to the aforementioned backlash (never mind the success of bravely default). Mine was speculation based on the information we had been given, yours was worded as matter of fact. Changes to be imply...changes, not removal.

I don't really get these complaints. The story made perfect sense if you paid attention. And everyone should know that Phoenix down doesn't bring back the dead. It brings back the unconscious. Otherwise every death in every game is pointless.

It's not the best game ever, but it's not overrated, and it's certainly not bad. I will argue it was the best story driven game upon its release, and easily the best FF game up to that point (or since). The FF games before it had rather simplistic cartoon plots and characters, and the ones since have descended further and further into anime nonsense.

I just kinda stop listening whenever someone says something is "overrated". It's a bullshit concept. It just means you think the average opinion on something is higher than yours was. Why is that a problem exactly?

FF7 seems to have been considered overrated for so long by so many people that by their own logic, it's now underrated.

Well I disagree, I think it's really overrated, the amount of love this game gets is purely made from nostalgia...
Well, we'll have to agree to disagree. I can guarantee that you're wrong on that last part, though. I didn't play the game until after the PS3 was already out, and I found it to be fantastic. It has strong and weak points, like any game, but it's pretty phenomenal on its own standards. It's certainly more complex then anything else Square has ever produced. Xenogears comes close, perhaps, but it gets most of its good ideas from Eva, and unfortunately it falls apart at the end.

The gameplay is well above average, with a surprisingly intricate combat system. The weakness is that the characters are interchangeable, combat wise. The graphics during the battles were ahead of their time. The interface outside of combat is a mixed bag. The overworld is probably the best its ever been, and the painted backdrops are beautiful. Unfortunately the sprites don't hold up so well, and there are several placed that contain confusing, and poorly designed jumping puzzles. The story is well above average, even by today's standards. It explored themes of loss, life, death, and religion. It even explored the the difficulty of living life well, even though you know that all life is doomed to end. It explored the concept of entropy a full fifteen years before Dark Souls. There are some poor plot moments, such as the bit where Shinra tries to steal Cid's plane, or anything with Don Carneo, but those are largely forgivable. In the end FF7 is a flawed masterpiece, and, love it or hate it, it revolutionized gaming. I would argue it still holds up well today, especially in terms of plot. The mechanics can be somewhat dated, but in that regard it was a product of its time.
