Okay, first of all

The Adventures of the Increasingly Androgynous Adolescents with Stupid Hair and Terrible Combat Mechanics.
All three of those are an opinion, and the first two are quite frankly stupid and childish opinions, grow up please.

Secondly

You don't like turn based combat..ok...so don't play it. Turn based combat IS NOT BAD GAMEPLAY, it is a DIFFERENT gameplay style that some like and some don't.
This couldn't be more true, Do you consider chess a dated and disgraceful game?

I think turn based combat is fun, And I'm glad they're keeping it. So sue me.

i used to like this series but then the heavenly light of FF12 made me see these games for what they were

i think FF13's ONLY selling point is the "apparently cut-scene worthy graphics"

I have no issue with turn based combat, I loved the Persona games, but Final Fantasy 13 hits me with a problem I can't get passed. Something I don't need to play it to know.
I hate the art direction. All the characters look like they just took more popular characters from 7 and 8 and slapped them together. Nomura admitted "Lightning" was meant to look like a female Cloud. Combine this with the sci-fi stuff. If I want to play Star Ocean, I will. When I think of "Final Fantasy" I think of a group of warriors, monks, mages and rouges traveling around a magical world with moogles and giant orange fucking chickens. In my eyes, 9 was the last real Final Fantasy, 7 and 8 didn't happen, and 6 only squeaks by for still having moogles and a fucking yeti.

You guys are aware that technically FF7 onwards had options that allows you to remove the enemy vs you turn based aspect? That FF10 was the only FF game recently that actually had 100% full on turn based combat?

Also why the wait for E3 to have a stab at FF13 the demos been out for a while in Japan so the game play mechanics haven't really been that closely guarded a secret. Also the core tennats for the FF games have been the same since I started playing back on the Psone with FF7. Why are people still complaining about them now?

I'm playing FFX right now since my xbox RRoDed.

I must say I don't really mind the turn based system. So it just not be for you. I mean you don't hand a FPS junkie Halo Wars.

The game looks fantastic so I'll be enjoying FFXIII in its entirety when it comes out for the Xbox360.

And because I am insecure, I just want to say I also enjoy Halo3, Cod4, Orange Box, and western RPGs like Elder Scrolls, Guild Wars, and Diablo 2.

OK, you don't like turn-based. So?

I, for one, like turn-based battles. A lot.

There are a lot of reasons to rag on the FF13 battle system--unlike you, I've actually played the demo and know what the system is like to play--but ragging it for being turn-based, which is how the genre rolls and complaining about it is like complaining about FPSs for being first-person, is not one of them.

According to the genre name, you should be playing a role in these games, not playing through exceedingly boring encounters in order to watch terrible storylines unfold.
I guess I just don't like the series as a whole, but that's an entirely separate issue.
Precicely my point.

1) Because I don't give a shit about what happens in Japan.
2) Because we have found much, MUCH, better ways to portray 3rd person action recently.

There is no universal definition or code for RPG's. There are different variations and approaches to the RPG genre so that point is entirely moot. Some people enjoy all that free will choice stuff while others enjoy their "interactive movies", the concept of "Role playing" is a loose one and technically you ARE playing a role in such games.

that still doesn't mean turn based is obsolete or bad. Again a different gameplay style and one that is a staple of the franchise, which has been successful with it so evidently they aren't doing much wrong with this.

I don't think it's just the battle system that needs work, it's the entire fucking franchise. I love an epic story. I really do. But when I play it a hundred fucking times the same Goddamned way with different supporting cast members I cease to give a shit. I mean, really, how many times do we need to play as a plucky, feminine teenager with a dark past, a moderate chip on his shoulder, and a retardedly huge or exotic (read: useless) signature weapon?

Let me gaze into my crystal ball and tell you what FFXIII is going to be like, story wise. I see... yes, I see a smaller, younger male with hair that belongs in the club called "Chez Ass-Bang". His weapon... it's unconventional and rare. His party mates are... oh... they consist of a cute woman (princess, perhaps) who ends up falling for our hero, a "tough chick" who hates being called "baby" but she has a heart of gold, a big brawny dude with a tormented past (traditionally the manliest of all), and two casters, one of whom is spunky and rude, and one who is gentle and fair. The final showdown will be with an enemy from the hero's past, and the stakes in the ultimate battle will be the fate of the world, nay, the galaxy.

You know it to be true.

You really aren't. All the dialogue is written out for you, and there are but a few moments in even the most open-ended RPGs in which you can make a decision that changes the story. Fable II best fits the definition of RPG, while, if we are operating under the current FF definition of the phrase, then Super Mario Galaxy is an immersive princess-rescue Role Playing Game that takes place in space, with only one class: Plumber.

Errr... first of all, we've had real-time games for longer than turn-based games pretty much. Second of all, why complain about a game that belongs to a genre that you don't like? I'm probably not going to play Final Fantasy XIII for various reasons but complaining that it's a turn-based JRPG is really like complaining about Halo and Killzone by first person shooters. What's there to achieve with this, anyway? There are plenty of games with third person action that don't belong to the genre FF13 is.

Yes, and there are many different approches to an open world game, but then all of them contain an OPEN WORLD! You wouldn't call God of War an RPG, and it has the ability to level up certain aspects of the character, and you do also have some kind of a role to play, but that doesn't make it an RPG. The thing is that JRPG's aren't really RPG's, because the whole point of an RPG is choosing a class and having explosive adventures playing as a person that you have created see also Dungeons and Dragons.

Edit: Okay people I know that no one is forcing me to play FF13, but I can still rant on it can't I? I see dozens of rants on other popular games like Halo 3, or... actually that is the only one I can think of. None the less, I never see anyone tell them off about it, aside from fanboys of course but they complain even if you don't think it is the gaming equivalent of the Sistine Chapel. My point is can't I not like something and be able to say it. Also to appease a certain escapist (you know who you are) I didn't make other paragraphs because I pretty much stayed on the same topic the whole time.
No, you don't get to rant about it. You are allowed to rant about bad games, or good games that look like they're about to ruin themselves in a sequal. With your example (Halo), Halo1 was a good game, but 2&3 were on the lower side of mediocre, so the ranting is allowed. Final Fantasy has always been a generally good series, and nothing in 13 seems to be deviating from the standard they've set themselves.
"I don't like the look of God of War 3. I can't believe they're going down the hack'n'slash route, just like they did with the rest of the series. It's almost as if they've decided that they want their entire series to be like that!"
You see how stupid that sounds (or is it looks? Internet grammer is hard). Complaining about a series that is simply sticking to what it knows is just stupid.

I don't care about this in the slightest, since I don't have a PS3 and don't particularly care for the FF franchise, but I still think FF, being the primordial turn-based RPG, should remain a turn-based RPG to the end of time. Switching it to anything else would be akin to betrayal.

No, you can't rant on it. Not because it's physically impossible for you, but because you've not played it, you have no intention of playing it, and are distancing yourself from it. Which means that you shouldn't have the right to rant on it given you have nothing to do with FF 13. I'm normally all for free speech and opinions, but the one thing I hate to see more than anything on the internet, even worse than trolls, is Haters. The Hate Wagon. If you haven't played a game, or seen it in action and decided to give it a fair chance, then you have no right to complain about it. The trailer is all that's been released so far, and that's about it. You have no clue as to the nuances and subtleties of the gameplay, the barest glimpse of each character and the overall storyline, in fact the graphics are the only thing we know anything about for certain. Hence give it a chance. Wait for the release and then play it, and then complain if you still don't like it. I'm also a fan of Halo and I don't mind people not liking it, but when they've never played it before I get annoyed when they rant about it. I only value free speech when it is made as an informed opinion, when people are talking about something they have some clue about. We don't, because the game hasn't been released yet. So save your judgement until after release, and you've played it yourself. Then you can rant to your hearts content. Not before.
