Would you rather play a game of "Final Fantasy: Let's sit and drink tea"? Final Fantasy has always been about saving the world, it's about epic tales. What else should it do? At least the stories have variety if you look at the details.

And thanks for the spoilers.
I'm not actually complaining about it, just pointing it out to the OP that this is how series of games work
Oh, sorry, thought you were negative about it. But a tip, keep the spoilers to a minimum, you revealed some twists that people didn't want to know.

Lightning was awesome from the start. I loved the fact that she was all "Let's just get this shit done."

Vanille is by far the biggest retard ever in a series like this; I mean she reminds me of Cheese from fosters home for imaginary friends (really!). All you have to imagine is LIKE the biggest most serious moment in the game like the dead of a character and then imagine Her busting out saying: I POOTED. I bet that all the characters would look at her like WTF and maybe smack her silly (really!!!!).
Sorry what? Yes, she's childish and carefree but not to such extremes. I don't know how much of the game you've played, but the extreme of Vanille's childishness is in the beginning of the game; she actually grows up a lot as the game goes on (as do most of the characters).

Sure, FFXIII doesn't do a whole lot that's new, but it takes things from the series' past and streamlines it. To illustrate my point: the sphere grid thing was really large and obnoxious, and so they refined it into something simpler.
No, Vanille is DEFINITELY screwed up to the extreme, and I don't believe in the "Excuse EVERYTHING she says or does in the early chapters" approach, granted she does get better in the later chapters.

The point is, when the appropriate thing to say after half of her carefree giggles are "We're gonna die!" you probably shouldn't have giggled.

Technically it's only the thirteenth numbered installment. There are loads of spinoffs like the Tactics series, the Crystal Chronicles series...

Not to mention the remakes and the individual additions like Dirge of Cerberus.

And she punched people (Snow, specifically) when they were being stupid.

Using mechanics and characters from previous final fantasy games...in a final fantasy sequel! *Gasp* Those knaves!
That made me laugh :)

I think the OP is being a bit unrealistic with his expectations for the game. As many people have said, generally sequels add something to an accepted formula - improving on what they believe to be the best aspects of the game while scrapping things they felt were less popular. Plus, they have changed the summons system every time I believe, some times to a greater extent than others.

I think the new summons system was interesting, and the essence or whatever or Alexander was preserved from what he was, for example, in FFVIII (though I don't really like Hope...).
I didn't really find Vanille that annoying, and Lightning I didn't feel compared to anyone you mentioned (I admit her name is similar to Cloud's and she is female, like the main characters in FFX2. Actually, now I think about it, Vanille would compare more to the FFX2 characters in my eyes, but again, not as much as you imply).

However you are entitled to your opinion, and perhaps there is a general feeling in this thread that you are trolling, because I haven't encountered other people on here who feel as strongly against as you do - so maybe we are being a little defensive.

Yes, but later on, she became more relate-able. I liked that. Although she became a little bit too motherly towards Hope.

Final Fantasy 13 is notthing more than a shame-less grave robber. I mean being a fan of the series I can tell as well as many you could tell as well that there is nothing new in this new istallment to this series. It is the bastard child/demon that should not been born (seriously!!!).

Let's break it down shall we: final fantasy 12 & FFX it took the summon system in terms of allowing the said summons to stay in battle longer for FF12 it was the worst partof the game for me it just didn't work....

FF12(again) they took the gambit system and really made it just flat out none playable (an improvement) but still inconvinient.

No limitbreaks, no overdrives, so nothing to appreciate the characters for..... >_>

The leadish character female: "Lighthing"(lame name) is just a blended smoothie of the female characters of X-2 with a table spoon or two of Auron & Cloud's seriousnessin the mix.

And to end WHAT HAPPENDED TO ALEXANDER? I MEan in this game he became a living Chess piece that is... >__<!!!!

ANy way I think that it has been the worst 60 bucks I spended ever... But What I want to ask you is: Do you actually like this game? What you think this game stole and from which Final Fantasy? And Whether the designer of this game should be flail and toss out on a deserted to die? I dont know What YOU Think??
Are you implying that everything hasn't already been done to death?

For the time that I played FFXIII I had fun. I can't bring myself to finish it for some reason, but I don't think it was terrible.

My biggest complaint with the game is that Lightning's voice actor was god awful BLEGH. Made me want to bang my head against the wall every time her speech got heated.

Wow, I didn't realise FF XIII had this much support. I thought it was quite good, a bit more straight forward in terms of getting from A to B, but overall it was a welcome addition to the series. (Alright, Hope sucked, but only up until about chapter 11.)

I didn't see it as a Mother so much as a Mentor relationship. He wanted her to teach him to fight, and they both ended up learning a bit from each other and having a Teacher-Student bond, with maybe a dash of mother/older sister/aunt on top.

while I think I agree with you, your arguement seems to be convoluted and sporadic. There are plenty of elements taken from previous games, but that's nothing new. As summons go, only two are origional, while the others are staple summons that appear in more than just one other game.
The gambit system doesn't exist in any sence what so ever. It is the most origional combat system, which is a point of annoyment for me, as I would have loved some sort of gambits to make sure I have some sort of control of my party members (such as always heal me first, because by the time you're done healing the other party member, I'll be dead, start over again)
You overlooked the whole hunt system that was relived from 12 as well, even though it was poorly implemented.
Lightning (not her sirname, it was hinted and outspoken quite often that it's her first name, which she changed after Serah became a L'cie) was origionally meant to be a female version of cloud, that was one of the main points given to the design team.
Alexander always looked ike a castle, he was some holy knight, but he always looked like stone wall with a face.
I failed to grasp how your point about Vanille even related to any previous games, which I thought was the point of your arguement.

To end, I agree with you, it does bare many similarities to previous games, but it's hardly the first to do it, and neither is it a bad game, and does have origional aspects, just not as many as I would have wanted.
Also, you need to work on making an arguement, it was horrible to read and took me about 4 times to grasp what you were trying to say on certain points.

The sign of her being mother-y for me was the scene where she held Hope next to her saying "I will protect you."

On the second last paragraph, why does your control over capital letters slowly diminish over time? Just curious.

OT: I actually found FFXIII to be quite enjoyable but I will agree with you about the fact the Lightning is more or less a variation of FF characters mixed together.

EDIT: I counted the final bosses with wings, and it comes to 3 or 4. So i don't think you have the slightest on what you're talking about good sir.

Eh I don't really think so. Sure, she's weird, I'm not going to deny that at all, but I think people overplay her weirdness. Her I saw the ZP for FF13, it gave me the impression that I was getting... well, another Selphie, but I don't think I got that. Instead, I got someone who tries tries to remain positive and smiling with everything encountered, but on the inside is still just a girl who has a lot of troubles.
But hey, to each his own.

Well, I just got the game yesterday, but so far I like it. It brings a new breath of life into the series in my opinon and I think it's done a terrific job so far.

You know what's weird about FF games is all the combat is turned base but when you see it in a FMV or some other parts it's not.

It reminds me of the unskippable joke "Hay isn't this a Final Fantasy game, you guys arn't taking turns"

Edit:You know what i'm going to make a topic about this

Also I wanted to add the final boss for a while now has always had wings REally check in youtube for every final boss of every final fantasy and most of them have wingsssssssss.......
Oh really? The below contains spoilers of the identities of the final boss of every main series FF title excluding XI.

FFI: Chaos has wings
FFII: Emperor has no wings
FFIII: Cloud of Darkness has no wings
FFIV: Zeromus has no wings
FFV: Neo Exdeath has no wings
FFVI: Kefka has wings
FFVII: Safer Sephiroth has appendages that resemble wings, but no actual wings
FFVIII: Ultemecia's final form has no wings
FFIX: Necron has no wings
FFX: Braska's Final Aeon has no wings
FFX-2: Shuyin has no wings
FFXII: The Undying has wings
FFXIII: Orphan second form has no wings

That comes to a total of...3, sort of 4 if you include Sephiroth.

I don't think you really have a clue what you're on about.

Oh no! A Final Fantasy game (the thirteenth one, no less) drew from gameplay and storytelling concepts of other games in the same series! I can't believe this injustice could happen!

All stupidity aside, it was a very well-made game. A great addition to the franchise overall.

So it seems to me that as a game it's great, but as a sequel it sucks? I mean the only people who complain about FF13 are final fantasy fans; and the new players seem to love it.
