I do wonder how square enix can still make money, when most of their game projects keep getting scrapped and reworked for a decade or two.
Cause Square Enix isn't just a game studio and have their hands in all sorts of subsidiaries and industries. It'll take more than a few botched game projects to drop them, though it might lead to subsidiaries getting axed.

I apologize if that question was rhetorical.

I also hope they don't mess to much with Cloud personality, he was a pretty big jerk for most of the game and I know he's kinda being retro actively classified as so some emo quiet guy but he actually talk quite a lot in the original.
God, so much this. I want Snarky Asshole Cloud.
Well, "asshole" is a stretch. He's like that for the beginning of the game, but kinda drops that after Midgar but keeps his sardonic wit. Pretty much the only FF character I can describe as someone that is an asshole is Squall

-looks at Sephiroth-

...The entire design team forgot the point of him was that he was never seen until you got out of Midgar. Hoo-boy, this is not off to a great start
Maybe. Looking at popularity rankings tho, Sephiroth is top 3 for FF characters and way up there for villains in gaming overall. Pretty much everyone knows what he looks like and that he's the villain of FFVII. He's iconic.

From Square's perspective, there is no real reason why they shouldn't include one of their most bankable characters in their marketing. I would even hazard a guess that scene with Sephiroth was created specifically for the teaser, and may not actually be in the final game.

The only thing I want in Life is this game. Can you guys tell that this is my favorite game of all time, and this remake is like a childhood dream come true (if it doesn't end up blowing ass).

Seeing the scenes direct from the original game remade in this trailer brought me to damn near tears. I can't wait.

if this ever were to come out while this collaboration of shoddy cells are still resisting entropy in vain, it'd be the first classic beloved FF game experienced, so am considering maybe trying the original beforehand if there is access to it on PSN store as resisting entropy is not garunteed to last. cos if there's anything this remake is screaming, it is "expect a lot of shit you once loved to be cut out in favour of our delicious graphics!" will have to be highly cautious and anticipating an absence of nostalgia leading to some form of disappointment though, expectations should be tempered and approached with understanding of known differences

there doesn't seem to be a mention about the rest of the state of play, which means there is nowhere to talk about the new predator game announcement...squeeee! there hasn't been one of those in sooo long, finally! can't wait to find out what it's l...wh... what was that? did they just say only online multiplayer?

...

of course it is

I would kill for a Predator game that's not multiplayer only. While the idea sounds interesting, I'll get bored of the multiplayer quickly. It seems the industry still hasn't learned it's lesson from last generation. As for Medievil, I bought the first game back in the day and never got the second one. I planned on doing, it but I kept forgetting. At least you and I are still good for remake, instead of a certain person named gaming Brit, who claims "it's a game that does not need to be remade". When one, there hasn't been a MediEvil game since the one back on PSP in 2005 (I was 16). And two, not a lot of the young people are are going to know or even remember medieval. Only those that grew up in the 90s and early 2000s would know of the games.

it is a weird phrasing I've never really agreed with, as nothing in gaming is ever 'needed' nor any other entertainment medium either. 'need' is more associated with the repercussions of not receiving a necessary thing leading to pretty bad times, such as daily medication, nutrition, appropriate surgery, the toilet, main pillars of education (including sex ed) etc etc. games are just a want; a bonus distraction from the horror of having to exist. if any form of entertainment could claim to be 'needed,' it would have to be something topical, poignant and presenting relatively fresh messages or ideas that alert people to harmful realities expected to worsen if left unchecked or ignored that they have the power to change. can't say any game has ever hit that kinda note as of yet. the phrase "nobody asked for this" is a similar bugbear in that I'm almost certain nobody specifically asked for any of the classics before they were made either, other than the relevant producers of course

Note, at 15:18, VII will be playable at E3.
I'll feel real bad for him if the game doesn't live up to the hype :(

OP: I really dig the teaser. I used to have no faith in modern SE, but after getting into FF14 it became clear there are still a lot of people at that company that do know how to make good games. Let's hope this project comes together in the end.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
People literally just wanted a graphical update for ff7, keep everything the same, just make the sprites look better and remaster the backgrounds. Personally I would rather see them do it to FF9, which was a better game/story, but whatever.

I mean, it looks pretty, gameplay doesn't look bad. But was Cloud always such a dour guy? I thought he was a bit more... not that, in the original, not like the brooding whiner he was in the movie.

Also environments that were comprehensable. Seriously I?m playing the original on my Switch and it?s a chore figuring out where to go.

Also, anyone else concerned they?re not showing anything past the first 2-3 hours of the original?

Haven't played the Switch port personally, but I actually liked the old static backgrounds personally. They had a certain charm to them.

As for the teaser, my guess is they are saving a lot of stuff for E3. For example, if you look closely at most of the gameplay footage you can clearly see Tifa is in the party but they only show shots where she is out of frame. If I had to guess that shot of Sephiroth is actually from the Niffelheim section or at least flashback later in the game.

Considering Nomura's history, he is going to George Lucas/JK Rowling the FUCK out of this. Furthermore, ya wanna know WHY Sephiroth stuck in the public consciousness so well?: because the game reinforced his mystique properly. In FFVII, you don't see a single hair of him until the flashback in Kalm. As such, you are given no chances to grow an impression of him before he finally enters the story. Heck there's even this interesting fourth-wall bit where Cloud mentions that Sephiroth's power in person is even more impressive than in stories about him. And the flashback reinforces that by having him at Level 50 with ridiculous equipment (including the Masamune, a legendary weapon in the franchise that for once you're unable to use) and maxed out Materia.

He's one of the few villains I can think of where his backstory and intro are the same. You learn about Sephiroth in real-time, seeing his fall as it happened and as such it is one of the most chilling and memorable sequences in the history of gaming. It doesn't matter that he's been around for 20 years, experiencing that same lack of info about him is vital to reinforcing that moment in the story and trying to hype him up undermines that:

Also, as if Square couldn't make me even more skeptical:

Good god, Square, why?

Press the - button and it'll reveal icons as to where you can get on the map.

And they've said it'll be episodic so I wouldn't be shocked to see Part 1 only being the first Act of Midgar in the game. So it'll probably go until you escape Midgar before you get the open world.

Although to be fair, if you watch the trailer, you see sections that take WAY longer than 2-3 hours if you aren't blitzing the game. Like the Aps fight right after the cross dressing scene in Wall Market, as well as fights in the sewers are shown. Also one of the robot fight clips appear to be inside the Shinra building, but it might also be the Sector 5 reactor.

Everything indeed is strictly in Midgar though. I can't wait to see Tifa's design though. Omg if they nerf her chest my 13-year-old self will fucking rage.

From the trailer I think the area you see are

-Beginning is from the starting movie with Aeris
-First fight right as you leave the train
-First boss (scorpion robot)
-Not sure, some sort of public transport, probably before you attack the second reactor when you get ambushed in the train
-First reactor
-Subway track
-First or second reactor
-Aeris when you meet her after the reactor attack
-Sewer beneath Don Conrneo (I hope they keep this whole segment the same, dress/wig and sauna, Square!)
-Next segment I'm not 100% sure but I don't think its Shinra HQ, I don't think you fight those enemy in the HQ, only in reactor and in the world map around Midgard, so I think its 2nd reactor
-First reactor boss
-The Sephiroth tease is probably when Cloud first goes near a reactor and he has a moment when sephiroth talk to him in his head or something

I don't know how they're going to split the game in three but my guess is that it's going to be super linear and won't have a world map. They're going to want to finish at least one part on Aeris death, so my guess is 1- Midgard, 2- everything up to city of ancient (but probably will cut a lot of content here), 3- the rest.

You can fight an enemy like that when the elvator goes haywire and you fight through the incorrect floors you pick. If you go through the front door of the HQ.

I'm less bothered by spliting the game up as I am gonna be about the time between episode releases and I hope that they have enough done to make it so the gap between each part isn't extreme.

That just tells me that the devs knew that the levels were impossible to navigate without them. It's a patch fix.

And I think that's a bad path for the game.

I admit, I didn't see the sewers fight. Still, this is all heavily front loaded stuff we're seeing here.

.....Thank you for sharing.

The original 1997 PS1 version also had map markers. It was the first 3D Final Fantasy game, so they probably new that the map wasn't always clear.

And I agree. I don't want the game episodically.

However I'll take it in parts over not getting it at all. And they did say that they plan to expand out each part to make sure there is plenty of additional content to make each release feel rich and full of shit to do.

I'm totally okay with them expanding the game. I just hope that each part release isn't 15 fucking years between each other.
