So I've never played a final fantasy before. Dunno why but I have never been motivated to buy one, probably because none of my friends have either and there doesn't seem to be much coverage of them in Australia. I did play Kingdom Hearts on the PS2 and loved it, as well as pokemon on my old gameboy colour. Today I was looking through the PSN store and came across the original PS1 final fantasy seven and thought "what the hell?". I picked it up and I am enjoying it immensely so far. So my question is; are all of these games this enjoyable, and if so would 13 be worth aquiring? I don't have much money at the moment and I don't want to waste it on a game that will only last me a few days.

Simply put it has this effect:

The greater the number at the end of "Final Fantasy" the worse it gets. 10 should be the limit max.

Well I kinda enjoyed FF12, but I also enjoyed the older onces, I guess it's just up to you which is the good onces... But yes, it does get worse the higher the number...

Don't buy FF XIII unless you like the idea of watching a movie in which you have to keep pressing a 'continue watching movie?' button.

I've been thinking about getting FF13 for a while now, but I'm still uncertain. I've can probably get that and/or Mass Effect 2. I remember Final Fantasy 7 being the first Final Fantasy I played and what a life changer it was for me

Final Fantasy games vary in quality, the one I would recommend most is IX (seriously, get that form the PSN, it's the best FF game on a Playstation console) I would recommend XIII as well since you said your only console is a PS3, but I can't stress enough GET IX

Pass on VIII though, most people dislike it and you're probably not willing to risk it.

Did I mention you should get IX?

And don't listen to the people who say XIII is just a movie or some crap like that, XIII is fun and has really good gameplay, also the whole 20 hour tutorial thing is also a huge lie. The game slowly introduces more elements as you go instead of piling them all on to you at once. This makes the learning curve a lot easier and makes things feel like you are progressing more in terms of abilities.

edit: Wow lack of sleep really hurt my grammar...

I think it's just been a downward spiral since FF7, the 2D games almost got better each time.

And this is the sort of post you shouldn't listen to. Personally, I loved X, XII and XIII. I'd go so far as to say XIII has an amazing battle system, much more fluid, fast-paced and fun than other games of the series, combining the best part of XII's system with the cool ATB system that we saw in games like FFX-2. And the characters are pretty good, considering the situation they're in. So yeah.

Anyway, OP, my advice to you would be to find friends or whatever who have some of the other games and play those first, or see Let's Plays or demos online, or play demos yourself if you can get your hands on any. That will tell you much more than we can if you'll enjoy them or not, because here all you're going to get is people complaining that particular games in the series are good or bad. If I listened to people here I'd have never played X-2, and that's actually one of my personal favourites in the series. Same applies for XIII. Nobody else's opinion matters but your own, so that's what you need to focus on. It's the reason I never listen to game reviews, and it's the reason you shouldn't listen fully to a potentially biased group of posters.

You can't call it Final Fantasy without the first two games. Oddly enough FF3 still hasn't been re-released (to my knowledge) so its only available via a japanese rom and translation patch, via emulation.
3 was released on DS a few years ago.

XIII isn't that bad, i've never played a FF besides it and the mmo and I don't mind it so far. There are a lot of good JRPGs on the PS3 though.

For better or worse, 13 is nothing like 7. I didn't mind 13 so much but I'd never recommend it on the basis of liking 7.

Bleh. I preferred 9 over 8 over 7 over 6. My experience of all FFs I've played (that's 6 through 9) bar 13 is that they're so similar it's a little silly to say one is definitively better than another, bar slight personal preference.

It's a shame it was a really shitty remake that changed a lot of the game's elements.

NES version seemed more in depth and rewarding, and more fun since the ninja and sage classes were not nerfed

FF3 is on the DS.

OT: You can get both 7 and 8 on PSN, you can also get Tactics there too (I prefer that more than any other FF). I am just letting you know of your options, I have yet to beat a Final Fantasy game, I get bored with them and just don't pick them up for 2 to 3 months and then forget where I was and what I was doing.

Start with either Final Fantasy VI (get an emulator, it was known in the U.S. as final fantasy III), or Final Fantasy IX which can be bought off the PSN. To me, those are the best final fantasy games.

Thanks for the input everyone, there seems to be a lot of anti-XIII sentiments out there from FF fans. The main problem seems to be that it is a lot different from the previous games... Maybe because I haven't played the originals I will get more enjoyment out of it? From a little research I've done it looks like a great and stunningly beautiful game.

Well, it looks nice but that's all the positive things I can say about it. It's incredibly linear, the characters are unlikeable, the story is bad and it just isn't fun.

If you can get FFIV for the DS, I'd recommend that. It was pretty fun, but FFIV is my favorite anyways.
