I haven;t played ALL of the Final Fantasies, but Final Fantasy VII is my favorite, with 4 and 1 at a close second and third, but I don;t see why people would hate so much just because Someone doesn't like themost popular game of the series doesn't mean that people should hate.

I love FFVII, mostly so because of the story.

That's my opinion anyway, everyone is different. I wouldn't look down or insult anyone who doesn't like it, I find it annoying when people do that. I can't stand Gears of War (1&2) and I'm constantly slated for it, some people just take things far too seriously I think.

Playing Final Fantasy VII caused me to never play any turn-based RPGs for about two years.
You couldn't control anything that the characters did unless it was unimportant or in a battle. This caused the game to feel very "unmoving" to me. Personally it felt like I was reading a book... with really good music.

On the discussion of subjectivity, it's natural that everyone has their own opinion and that is to be respected. If you want your opinion to matter to other people, then you need to reinforce it with facts.

It's all subjective, my friend.
FF7 is my favorite game, for some of the reasons that have been said. I just wanted to say that the view you express above is held by essentially no human being on the face of the planet Earth - that I've met, at least. It's very easy to show that surely, you don't actually think this. I will take a weak example since it probably is enough - suppose a thief who thinks nothing of theft takes everything you own, including the clothes on your back and the apartment you are living in (I know, he's pretty good, huh?). Will you then say: "It's all subjective ..."?

If it is, then why should he be punished at all?

Humanity lives to first order, where in our interactions with each other we agree that some things are -not- subjective. More precisely, we agree that -all- things are not subjective, i.e. we agree on a first order universe. Some might argue that game design is one of those things - I think that this is where those people you mentioned in your first post come from. Doesn't make them less idiotic though =]

How harshly did you enforce your hatred of the game? Sometimes the better route to discussing your hatred of a subject matter is simply not to do so.
Because let us face the facts, it does nothing but spurn the scorn of those who did enjoy it.

You don't get anything out of it.

They just get a dosage of fanboy rage out of it.

Everyone loses.

There are many games/subjects/opinions I hate on this board, I will very rarely pursue one of them unless it really is in my face and the person discussing it is so misinformed the facts themselves jump out at me.

All that exists here is a difference of opinion on something that can only really be seen in the eye of the beholder or in this case, the player. It meant nothing to you, it meant alot to others. Just leave it alone and play and enjoy things you DO like.

It was pretty great, but then most of them were. It's not the best, but it doesn't have to be.

Looking back, I'm actually pretty fond of the materia system. I think if I could have used that in either 6 or 9 I would have loved it.

FF 7 had some of the shallowest characters of the entire series. It's also the ugliest Final Fantasy game of all. It doesn't even rank in the top half of my Final Fantasy games list.

So, looking at some of the replies here, the reason a lot of people say Final Fantasy VII is the greatest game ever is because it's the first rpg they really got into? So it's more a nostalgia thing than merit?

A solid game thats held back by Anime-Gamer (i.e. gamers who are in to anime first and gaming second) making it akin to the second coming of Christ in game form, and having Cloud be possibly the most annoying emo ***** boy in any form of fiction ever.

By the way, you're a bit hypocritical right there, don't you think? Insulting FF7's fans because... They're fans of FF7?
Meh. A quote from Men in Black might help get my feelings across. "A person is smart. People are dumb, visioucs, and cruel and you know it" or something like that. Most of the fans I've come acrossed mainly have rosey glasses over there eyes on FFVII, and it's mainly probably like someone previously said, nostalgia. Issue though, is they have a really bad time trying to defend it. I just don't like FFVII, and the hype and people around them isn't really a point in it's favor.

Was searching up visioucs before I understood what you meant, lol.

Anyway I feel more or less the same as you about FF7, I didn't like it and will not like it, I can see myself having liked it back when it came out but that's pretty irrelevant right now. I don't attack FF7's fans unless they're the ones to bite first though, I don't think everyone who enjoyed the game is a complete geek for doing so, nor are they all fanboys. (I think some of the comments on this thread are fairly objective when it comes to FF7)

ALL final Fantasy games are inferior to Dragon Quest.
well to be fair dragon quest is more of an mmorpg that focuses on quest and interaction while final fantasey is more of narrritive set in an rpg that guides you along a story
How in the crap was Dragon Quest an MMO?

I love FF7! Its the game that got me into gaming properly, I mean come on... the characters, the story, the soundtrack, the materia, the CHOCOBOS!

There is even one song that will stir up some emotions in most of the people who have played it... and I am going to post that now! :D

While I dont agree with your initial statement Dragon Quest is most certainly not an MMO.

VIII was my favorite, it had much better pacing and less grind. VII just had too much grinding out Materia. It leveled up so much slower than the characters or storyline progression. Yeah, there were weapons that did it faster, but they were for use in grinding only because they could not junction. Good game otherwise though. Very good story. Both were inferior to Chrono Cross though.

Final Fantasy VII was a very good game. It was not the best game ever, and it isn't my favorite, but it certainly wasn't bad or the worst game ever, either.

I only got around to playing FFVII recently and it didn't really interest me. I can understand why people like it so much though.
