No, FFX was decent. FFX-2, however...
'Ey, FFX-2 was the fluffiest FF that ever fluffed, and I loved every second of it. Everything about the game was just fluff. The characters were all retarded, the story was retarded, Yuna somehow became a pop sensation, Rikku's still annoying as hell, but god damned if the battle system wasn't amazing. Also, they somehow made Blitzball passable! I loved FFX-2 for it's fluffiness, as even a bad game is good when it's that damned fluffy.

I would say I don't really have a favorite Final Fantasy. I've played all but 8, 9, 13 and 13-2 to completion(not counting MMOs) and enjoyed all of them. It's also been several years since I've played some of them, so they might be clouded by nostalgia.

Necro-thread fun time!

X is good, X-2 is meh, VII is overrated, XII is bad, and VIII the best.

10 was actually the last Final Fantasy which i liked and Blitzball one of my favorite minigames. I agree that Tidus was a badly written character though.
For me Blitzball and the battle system were the only two things I liked about 10. It's the game that turned me off of the series after having loved every other entry that I'd had a chance to play at the time (which was 4-7 + tactics, not in that order.) I wasn't even impressed by the music, which is frequently cited as one of the better parts, because to me most of the main themes sound like slightly re-worked Christmas carols.

For example, compare this: <youtube=dmzZrj-cLSc>

to this

<youtube=9T4WB2zfmps>

You'll notice they use the same bloody chord progression for most of the song, and the high parts of "To Zanarkand" are similar to the melody of "Silent Night," to boot. The part I'm talking about starts about 25 seconds into the first video, and 22 seconds into the second one.

Add to that terrible characters with terrible voiceacting, a weak story, and no overworld to give a semblance of non-linearity, and I have a hard time understanding why so many people rank it so high. I agree with the person who said that FFVII was the beginning of the end not because of the game itself, but because Square was confused about what parts of it made it so great. FFX is an enhancement of several parts of FFVII, but the parts it improved on were the worst parts, leaving the core of what made it good out.

By the way, it always confused me that so many people hated Blitzball; I would have jumped at the chance to buy an expanded version of it as a standalone game. Best part of FFX, in my opinion, with the only other legitimately good part being the battle system.

Edit: Derp, I posted in a necro without realizing it.

Edit Edit: I mean, what is it with the necros lately? They've all been from 2010. I remember the forums being better when I first joined (which was in 2010), but I always figured it was kind of a honey moon period. I'm guessing by the number of necros from the time there was a wider variety of topics then than there are now, though.

Wrong, the merger with Enix ruined Final Fantasy and Square. Look at the games after IX, after the merger. Sure, X was a decent game but IX was better.

At first I had a sense of Deja Vu...
And then I noticed "Oh, I HAVE seen this before."

Necro-thread.

FFX was a surprisingly good turn-based RPG attached to an awful story with bad characters.
It was popular solely because at the time, it had some of the absolute highest production value (full-voicing, killer graphics, excellent score. Some other games had some of these, but not all of them)

Today, I don't know how anyone deludes themselves into thinking it was a good story, because it's the sort of dross that completely falls apart when you give it any sort of logical thought (that goes beyond suspension of disbelief).

This thread is seriously nothing but someone who saw The Spoony Experiment review of FF10 and decided to put it into essay format. Kinda totally pointless.
Exactly what I was going to say. He even threw in the Meg Ryan comparison.

I really liked the battle system, and FF10 has an excellent plot in my opinion, it's just that the visuals, dialog and many of the details take it down several levels.

Like, let's examine the basic premise: an imaginary teen sports star with father issues has his whole world destroyed, is taken to another far less advanced world, and falls in love with a woman who's destined to become a martyr for a few year's peace. The head religion is manipulative, nihilistic and corrupt, but they rule the world because nobody so far has had the ability to prove them wrong. You've got legitimate racial tension with the technology-using Al Bhed. Blitzball is part of a "panem et circenses" strategy to keep the common folk content with their daily lives even with the threat of a city-destroying behemoth looming over them

The premise is perfectly fine.

But then you get the visuals, which could be descibed as "JRPG with an existential crisis" because it is all over the place, switching from post-apocalyptic to high fantasy, to cyberpunk, to steampunk, to generic JRPG, to sci-fi designs.

Then there's the bad dialog and lazy cutscene direction (in-game footage cutscenes specifically).

Then there's the horrible voice directing. Rikku is voice by Tara Strong and Tidus' voice actor is James Arnold Taylor for Christ's sake! These people can act!

I love FFX, it's up there with Final Fantasy Tactics and FF9 as my favorite Final Fantasy games

SHUT THE FUCK UP!
Realise that just because it's called Final Fantasy doesn't mean it has to be exactly the same as the one before it.

Seriously, if they changed the name we wouldn't have any of this bullshit and you absolute idiots who call yourself fans wouldn't feel the need to spout this kind of crap.

This annoys me to no end.
Quote myself cause I don't even remember writing this...I still agree two years later.
