The combat system is clearly going to be atrocious.
Clearly? Not really, you might want to go into more detail with that.
Seems to be moving further in FFXII's direction... it looks like Rogue Galaxy now. That sort of combat just doesn't appeal to me. I'll still buy it the second it comes out, of course, but I have no idea why they don't pursue variations on FFX's near-perfect system.
A question of taste indeed, i loved FFXII and for me that's the ideal system to follow, with a mix of the old systems.

I don't know that I'm going to buy this one before it ends up in the bargain bin. FF was by far my favorite series for years. From the first one on NES up through FFVIII, each was individually "my favorite game" for a time. While I liked FFIX, it just seemed to be missing something that I still can't figure out, and everything since FFX seems to have gotten progressively worse. FFXII holds a unique title - The Unfinished One. I just quit halfway through.

I guess I'm divided - half hopeful and willing to give the latest in the series a try, the other half learned a lesson from the three (and 1/2 if you count FFIX) games that I bought and didn't enjoy that much.

Am I the only one who expects, at the very least, a well-designed game?

Stop looking for flaws for just a second, and soak in the sheer magnitude of what we have technologically achieved.

I agree.

I think that the trailer looks awesome and the combat gameplay didn't look that bad either.

Because FFX's combat system (imo!) made the game incredibly easy. If you can beat it easier without using the sphere grid than just playing the game there's a problem there. Most bosses I could beat in 3 turns without fear of dying because you knew the order of attacks beforehand

I agree its way to early to speculate on anything about the game other than the look of it which is breathtaking. Unless anyone knows Japanese and can translate the combat window I say just wait for more details.

Aside from that, If the combat lets you control 3 characters at a time (i.e. no AI decisions/gambits/Kingdom Hearts backup characters) I can see potential for fluid combat to work out better than anticipated.

Menu translations - I'm not too sure how the fight system works, it just looks like you're chosing from fight, fire, cure etc and those actions are being queued up.

EVEN though I'm kinda put off by a girl main character (instant eyerolling), this looks stunning. I'm glad they've gone back to a more sci-fi/fantasy setting than the straight fantasy of XII. And it wasn't the combat system of 12 that meant it is unfinished, it was the rather straight forward plot.

so
setting - check
eye candy - check
plot - probably

Looks like I'll be playing this after all.

Verses how ever I'm looking forward to 10x and will definetly be buying a PS3 for. (even though I'm tempted by the cloud black limited edition bundle that comes with Blu-ray AC in May that square keeps emailing me about)

...aaand here we have the perfect reason why you shouldn't let Nomura on the loose alone.
FYI Nomura is just the character designer for XIII, it's verses he's directing as well.

It took way to long to load and explained NOTHING. On the other hand, we did finally get to see gameplay footage

ATB? I am not sure what that means, but I am currently playing Eternal Sonata, and what you described sounds kinds like ES. Please respond :D
ATB means Active Time Battle.

In FF VII, VIII and IX there is a bar and when that bar is full you can do something. That's ATB. It's basically a turn based combat system if you get down to it. It looks like it's not but it is.

0.0 GODDAMN. Well i'll fully admit that im a FF fanboy. whatever, if this games plays half as good as it looks then it's about damn time we got a FF that can immerse you in a meaty world that you can bite your teeth into. So what if were supposedly getting it in the states "no sooner then april of 2010". Hopefully it'll be worth the wait.

It probably will be a bit like the FF XII battle system.

I criticize but thats becase I accept that I will love this game and nothing can dissuade me until I play it and don't like it, not saying I'm setting myself up NOT to like it. I want to love this game, and I'm very forgiving. SquareEnix would need to kill my cat, deeply insult my girlfriend or do something that is the game related equivalent before I could hate this game.

You are wrong and kinda right. I know that Cifer is from FF VIII. I own that terrible game but in FF VIII he looks different than in Kingdom Hearts.

The KH Cifer looks exactly like the guy from the trailer. I meant that one thats why I wrote "the one from Kingdom Hearts".
