I paired people up for shits and giggles rather than stats. My pairings went as thus.
Chrom and Sumia - Almost certainly canon. Heck, the opening CG cutscene obviously is showing Sumia with an infant Lucina. even Lucina supports with Cynthia seem to hint more strongly towards them being siblings than most.
Avatar and Tharja - Probably also extremely close to canon. Tharja is also utterly hilarious. With the confession especially I couldn't help but wonder if my Avatar was thinking "Should I run in terror or just tie myself to the bed?" Plus I'm also a fan of her voice actress.
Lissa and Lon'qu - Actually the closest I believe to being canonical, mostly due to the obvious Navarre and Lena archetype going on
Sully and Virion - He hits on her within SECONDS of meeting her. How can I deny the archerest of archers his goal?
Vaike and Panne - Kinda made sense since Vaike was never one to give a shit about people's standing or even race.
Miriel and Kellam - Dear lord, Miriel can analyze ANYTHING
Maribelle and Frederick - Fewer things are funnier than seeing Frederick try to gauge Brady.
Cordelia and Stahl - Actually very touching due to Stahl trying so hard to get her attention by learning to play music with her
Nowi and Donnel - This one was more due to Donnel absolutely INSANE skill that gave him incredible growths. Nah was a BEAST on the battlefield because of it.
Olivia and Gaius - HILARIOUS, plus considering Gaius totally macking on Olivia in this pairing it actually makes logical sense that Inigo would inherit that.
Cherche and Libra - Very funny one due to Libra trying to communicate with Cherche's wyvern.
I don't think I've ever gotten Tharja or Libra in my play through.
I think all the ships have something unique to them, and boy did I laugh during Henry and Miriel ship. Something is seriously wrong with that dark mage....and I like it.
Very enjoyable characters. I haven't cared about characters like this since Mass Effect.
On that note, I am curious as to why so many FE fans were upset about Nintendo thinking of shutting down FE permanently.

Radiant dawn was pretty bad and Shadow Dragon was meh, but new mystery of the emblem fixed many of SD's problems and would be the only chance for non-JP audiences to experience it. Many of us of the Serenes forest Forums were hoping real hard for NMotE to get a release stateside. We thought Awakening was going that route, too, considering nintendo waited a year after Jp-launch for the localization announcement. So you can guess how fucking excited we were for that, especially given how much praise our importers said the JP version was.

When I have a choice like this in game which will either improve my story or gameplay experience I would in most of these cases improve my story experience. As such I paired up the characters for shipping purposes. This however did have the coincidental effect of giving me some of the most broken combinations.
I paired my character with Chrom for OTP AND stats. Then I paired up people that either joined the party together or looked cute as a couple. Still ended up with great stats. I do regret that even though my Morgan was powerful, I hadn't leveled up my Robin as a Dark Flier enough to get the Galeforce skill on him before meeting him. Will be rectifying that in my current play through.
I uh... I didn't know this affected stats and classes. Awakening is my first Fire Emblem, so I didn't know it was quite so in-depth.
But I paired them based on whomever I felt they fit with best, for the sole purpose of unlocking side missions. If they didn't unlock a mission, I left them forever alone. (For the time being, since I still haven't finished it... [sub][sub]why is it so hard ._.[/sub][/sub])
For example, I wed the Avatar and Cordelia because Cordelia's a fuckin' badass and she's really pretty. Also two birds with one stone as far as mission unlocks go. And I stuck Vaike and Miriel together because I never use either of them and they're dumb and can be dumb together.
Chrom married Sully on accident. I didn't even know marriage was a thing until then. :I

Pretty much all of my pairings in my first runthrough were for personal reasons instead of min-maxing.

I guess because of the really bad sales of the other oversea releases Nintendo didn't want to risk it shipping New Mystery and getting the same results of abysmal sales.
Either way, despite New Mystery being great, Nintendo was ready to put Emblem on the chopping block if they didn't succeed with this one.
Really glad they pulled it off, and now I am very excited to see the crossover game on the WiiU.

But once I saw that that was how it happened and kids came as a result, I then started to pair people up just for the sheer hell of it. Like Nowi and Henry. Henry's proposal reminded me of Miroku, only he was far less obnoxious about it. "Hey you want other dragons? I know! Let's get married and have kids. BAM! You'll have more dragons!" That pairing just cracked me up so much. I've still got a ways to go, but I'm really digging this game and the whole relationship bit.

I didn't even know stats were involved in the first place (this being my first FE game) so I just want fangirl crazy and shipped the cutest pairs or the ones that had matching personalities in my opinion.
how ever Damiana(Avatar) end up with Chrom >.> and i have no idea why, or that it was even gonna happen so ... yay me, I'm a Queen XD.
case your wondering, I don't pair people cause most of my main squad is pretty 'stompy', meaning they just rip through enemy units like that aren't there, Damiana her self can pretty much one shot anything that isn't a boss, hits twice (so bosses go down in one turn anyway, is almost untouchable, is a Pegasus Knight, so dat range yo. so she's not so much a 'tactical expert' as she is a 'weapon of mass destruction'

Now I feel stupid for never taking advantage of that item in my first play through (in fact I didn't use it at all) I am on my second play through and I will make sure to use these boxes extensively.
I had my Protagonist and Chrom screw by accident. My first Fire Emblem game being this one, I had no idea that simply reaching rank S was enough to prompt characters to get their sick nasty on.
I rolled with it though, and Lucina's sibling bonding with Morgan was pretty heartwarming.
The rest, I paired as I thought appropriate for the characters. No stats involved.
Obviously, Lissa wound up with Frederick.
Also Lon'qu goes with Panne. Human women? yikes. Were-rabbits? Hot dog. Further, their child seemed to strongly resemble Lon, at least in my eyes.
Now that I think about it, that also happened with Tharja and Virion's daughter, who has Virion's hair, and his profession.
Note that I had no idea how the kids would turn out at the time. How 'bout that.

They released a DLC map soon after the game was released (The Golden Gaffe) that gave out at least 130,000 Gold if you beat most of the Risen within 5 turns or so, that I exploited whenever the money was running low, so other than my first short play through before my download I've not had that problem in my others.
I apologise for bumping this nearly two months old thread as I got a query about this subject in the game and I can't be bother making a thread to discuss this specific part of the game.
I'm having abit of a stumped at this game as I had read up about the "galeforce" ability. What I like to know is how important is it to acquire it or does anyone on here actually got and used it? I'm just asking cos from the sound of it, it seen it will require alot of grinding and time just to get an ability.
I mean at the moment I am almost up to that chapter before the timeskipped happened and I'm doing the supporting stuff (got a couple of S ranks now but there are still more shipping to do). Even then it still require alot of time and grind (finding more challange battles and getting those seals to promote/ reclass my party). Heck only two of them had been promoted so far (Liss and Maribelle) so it will take me some time to get them to level 20 to fully utalise the promote/ reclass feature!
Before you asked, I'm playing it on casual and normal mode. Even then I still restart the game when my character HP had reach 0 (yes I know there is no permadeath but I would still want that character to still be in that chapter to gain experience).
Oh as for the topic- since I had read up on this Galeforce ability beforehand I pretty much had pair up my characters for the stats only but I'm not exactly upset over it, actually Sully and Donnel seen to go well hand in hand and aswell with Cordelia Stahl (to me they kind of like the second Chrom and Summia), Gaius and Tharja (the class on those two are not exactly lawful good).
