.......Oh! Team Fortress 2's community is tolerable for the most part!
I have to disagree. As a female, I cannot enter a server without being bombarded by the same typical questions and chides.

OMG UR A GURL?
DO YOU HAVE BOOBS?
DO YOU LIVE IN NEW YORK?
HOW OFTEN DO YOU WASH YOUR VAGINA?
YOU SOUND LIKE A 13 YEAR OLD BOY
CAN I SEE PICS OF YOUR BOOBS I THINK UR A GUY

The Final Fantasy XI community was very obliging to me, though.
Just have to find a good server and become a regular on it. The women on some of the servers I play on never get bothered since the admins won't put up with idiot people. Look up the BAM servers and there are a few more good groups out there.

Do MMOs count? If so, then definitely City of Heroes. You usually get some higher levels wandering around low-level areas giving people useful items and offering to help them with missions and will give them pointers.

As far as non-MMOs go, I'd have to say the best is the Battlefield community.

The RIFT community was incredibly helpful and friendly when I played. I don't know now.

Tf2, as people said before, on certain servers, FUG probably being one of my favorite to play on mostly because the overall welcoming anyone gets when playing there.

Admittedly this is just from my impressions but I've found that the communities built around text-based adventures such as AvatarRPG trump all other genres in this regard. Not 'pestering' or 'bugging' but a friendly voice is just one click away.

The early L4D community was also really good, now though you just get bored kids who will shoot team-mates for no apparent reason.
I'd still call L4D as a good community, sure there are jerks but the beauty of a coop game like L4D is that you can spot them and kick them in the blink of an eye, plus with steam you can easily build up a pool of "friends" who you know are good sports, so you always have a few people to play with.

OK all that takes a little work and if you just jump into random games you will get mixed results, but even so, when it does work the teamwork works better than any other multiplayer game I've played plus you get closer to your team mates and get to know them a bit quite quickly.

Other than L4D, I call decent clan servers on CSS, the game is so old at this point that the vast majority of jerks and griefers have moved on to pastures new, and the people left are mature and friendly as a rule.

I've seen that kind of behavior on many servers. Yeah, there are a few good ones, but TF2 isn't all that friendly overall. I think the people believe otherwise are confusing friendly with friendlier (than that other shooter).

FPS: GRAW series comes to mind. Tribes for what is left of it

MMO: LOTRO followed closely by the non-free EQ 2 servers.

This. >.>

That just about comes with the territory though.

I have to say the friendliest multiplayer I've found is Soul Calibur IV... even though I tend to be ruder playing that game than with any other xD. It's really easy with some characters to use the same move repeatedly and make it nearly impossible to hit them. Other than that though.

I don't think it matters what game people play. Communities consist of people, and people are a-holes. You will always encounter friendly and tolerant players as well as trolls.

I have encountered the friendliest players in TF2, but I only join one server which is a clan server, so that might just be this little clan community itself.

It really depends on who you're playing with, I've had ridiculous amounts of crap in one game of Left 4 Dead 2, but when I finished that one and moved on to a new game it was lots of fun. Games where servers are static (for the most part) like TF2 tend to do really well once you hunt down a few servers and get to know the people you're playing with. The community is always better if you've got a few friends to play with.

LotRO, Rift, and...I suppose most of the MMORPG communities are decent. Just have to watch out for the people who take their RP or PvP way too seriously.

The Starcraft community is incredibly nice. They are really the most awesome community I have ever seen in any game.
It is actually disturbing for me, as I was used to DotA/WoW/LoL community. But in Starcraft I get insulted or flamed really rarely.
Generally everyone respects each other because Starcraft players are like martial arts fighters: Everyone knows how incredibly awesome they and their opponent are, so they respect each other and stick to the etiquette.

Day of Defeat source has a good gaming community, except for one of their senior admins threatens to ban you every time you kil him.
