I always think of neuschwanstein castle, even though I know its technically outside Germany's borders. I also think of my family, Einstein, Yes I do think of Nazi's but not like I think they are currently their but that is part of Germany's history, and Hasselhoff.

Hate to say it, but I'm afraid Hitler is the first thing that automatically comes to the front of my mind. Then I think of chocolate, then heavy metal, and then leaderhosen. Stereotypes galore.

Beer, bread, eurozone, engineering history, Neuschwanstein Castle, Wagner, World Wars, Prussia. Those are the things that came to mind right now, but nerr, it depends on the day and the context it's been brought up in, really like most things.

Well I lived in Germany for 5 years...and I'm a Musicologist a lot of whose research has to do with Germany...so I have lots and lots of thoughts when people say Germany.

But first is probably my wonderful German ex-girlfriend Astrid.
Then I think about the town I lived in Augsburg.
Then I think about the Comedian Harmonists and Marlene Dietrich.
Then I think about Spezi.
Then all the delicious food...like blaukraut, sauerbraten, spaetzle...all the pastries...oh...the food in Bavaria is divine.

So much to think about.

The german language is the first thing. I took german for 4 years in high school and have traveled there. I don't really make any connection with the country now known as Germany and the Third Reich.

Thinking of Berlin

The wild, decadent ways of the Weimar era are alive again in Berlin - Wall Street Journal [http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203471004577141353667947254.html?mod=googlenews_wsj]

Quote:
Today, with the city's post-Berlin Wall reconstruction nearly complete in physical and emotional terms, there are signs that the wild, wicked Berlin of the 1920s has returned. The city's avant-garde art scene is flourishing; stars like Olafur Eliasson and Daniel Richter now call Berlin home. (Chinese artist Ai Weiwei accepted a post at the Berlin University of the Arts after his imprisonment last year.) World-class filmmaking has returned to the famed Studio Babelsberg; soundstages where Fritz Lang and Josef von Sternberg worked are now being used by notable subversives like the Wachowskis and Quentin Tarantino. The contemporary nightlife scene is unmatched in its enthusiasm for all-hours partying and sheer volume of venues and events--many inspired by a past golden age.

First thing that pops into my head is Angelena Merkel, which is rather curious since I spend so much time reading about the Nazis, though they were a close second. I'm well aware of the political landscape in Germany being unfavourable to extremist groups and I bear no ill will to my southern neighbours. I do hate fascists and Nazis however.

Welcome to Berlin, Europe?s new capital -
Financial Times

Berlin does not feel like an imperial city. The new government buildings ? the chancellor?s office, the Bundestag and the foreign ministry ? have all been designed with plenty of glass and natural light, to emphasise transparency and democracy. The finance ministry is, admittedly, housed in the old headquarters of the Luftwaffe. But most of the grandest architecture ? Unter den Linden and the Brandenburg gate ? is a legacy of the Prussian kings. Modern Berlin presents a more welcoming face, and has become a magnet for tourists and teenagers.

Yet while the German capital has deliberately eschewed the trappings of imperial power, the fact is that Berlin is increasingly the de facto capital of the EU. Of course the EU?s main institutions ? the commission and the council ? are still based in Brussels. But the key decisions are increasingly made in Berlin.
The problem ? if there is a problem ? is that life is too sweet in Berlin. Germany is prosperous and Berlin is a pleasant and fashionable city. The struggles of Greece or Spain seem a very long way away. That detachment from the rest of the eurozone ? rather than any ?will to power? ? is why Berlin remains a peculiar capital for Europe.

I judge a country very much so on its people usually. Other traits I would care about is the climate, food and landscapes.

But, usually when someone asks if I like a certain country, it is the people I have met from those countries that dictate my answer. I find that, much like a stereotype people from certain countries tend to act certain ways towards other people from other countries. In general, some are nice, others tend to be filled with rude and mean people. Now I am not saying if you are from a country I find has rude or immature people, I am not saying everyone from there is like that. I have seen enough to have an opinion of a countries people as a whole however.

So to answer your question, Germany is one of my favorite countries and I find it has some of the nicest people. That is what I think of first, is the great and friendly people I have met there. It is also one of my favorite languages. Really cool music scene and festivals, and since it is that time of year Oktoberfest! One of my friends is going this year.
