1. MGS3
2. GTA: San Andreas
3. Pokemon Yellow
4. Oblivion (Possibly Fallout 3 instead though)
5. COD4

Not the best games ever made, but all are exceptional in their own genres. I put Fallout 3 or Oblivion, because its more the huge freeroaming map they need to experience I think.

If I put the five best games I can think of, it's going to end up a lot like other peoples lists. Therefore I'm going to make a list of games people should experience for slightly unusual reasons. They're all good games too.
1. Lost Planet- It has a half mile long moth in it that you can kill. Then again, you can just ignore it.
2. Otogi 2- It has an armless, legless helicopter man.
3. Gears of War 2- "That's one... that's two...that's three... that's four...THATS FIVE MOTHERFUCKERS" and many others. Also, the Cole Train baby!
4. Max Payne 2- Vinnie Cogniti
5. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater- "Snake, what have you done? You can't kill Ocelot. Great, now you've created a time paradox!"

1. Gears of War 1 - Possibly my favourite game of all time, spent more time on this than any other game.

2. Crash Bandicoot 3: Time Warped - No hear me out, Crash was a defining factor in me getting into gaming. I've never yet met a singe PS1 or PS2 owner who has never played a single Crash game, it was simple, fun and addictive.

3. Portal - 'nough said

4. Elder Scrolls: Oblivion - It was between TES Morrowind and Oblivion, but Oblivion clinched it on a few factors... namely it being the first game I played on a current gen console one morning and thinking 'Holy sh*t...' to the gameplay, graphics and huge world.

5. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - Campaign was brilliant, loved every moment in the one sitting it took me to complete it. Was thinking of putting Bioshock in here instead, but COD's online gave it the deciding vote.

Any Fire Emblem game - Of the few turn based strategy RPGs I have played, to me, this series is the best of them all. Interesting characters, somewhat unique gameplay options (I have yet to see anything like support conversations, but if there are other games with a similar system, please tell me), and while the stories may not be unique, they are still pulled of well.

Any Zelda game - The Zelda series is the classic puzzle solving adventure game in my eyes. My most recommended game of the series is a Link to the Past, as I have yet to beat OoT.

Any Pokemon game - Seeing a trend here? All of these series have been around for a while, and there is a reason. They are all fantastic examples of their respective genres. I started playing Pokemon back when the originals were out, and I enjoyed it enough to keep playing even to today with the newest version I could get my hands on (Pokemon Diamond). I recommend Playing the newest or the Gold / Silver / Crystal generation. A fun little RPG, if a bit geared towards children.

Portal - Now this was an amazing game. Humorous, challenging, and very enjoyable. Short, but some of the most fun I have ever gotten out of my 360.

The Godfather - This may seem a bit odd, but bear with me here. This game is an example of a movie game done right. While it may not follow the movie 100%, I still greatly enjoy this game. This is the only game I have played where I can go from extorting a shopkeep to stealing a racket truck and using it to plow over a few civilians before bribing a cop and robbing the nearest bank. To me, this shows people that movie games can be good.

Honorable mentions:

No More Heroes - Fun to play, very interesting characters, and a funny, not quite predictable story all rolled into one awesome package.

Chrono Trigger / Cross - Two of the best RPGs I have ever played. Interesting casts of characters, excellent plot twists, and an engaging story.

Final Fantasy series - I have played most of them, and the ones I have played, I have loved (except XII, but it wasn't a bad game). Gameplay-wise, I likes FFX the most, and story-wise, FF VI. The first few are also classic RPGs.

Almost forgot about Mario. Mario games are the classic platformers, and everyone should play them at least once.

This list could go on forever, so I am going to cut it off here.

Grim Fandango - One of the best games ever, period. It's fun, it's clever and has a good story.
Portal - Well, basically the same as Grim Fandango, but the humour is darker.
Legend of Zelda (series) - Pure, (mostly) innocent fun. I've had nothing but good times with this series.
Ico/Shadow of the Colossus - Truly epic, it looks very good and a great story as well.
Tiberian Sun (+Firestorm)/Sins of a Solar Empire/Warcraft 3/Beyond Good and Evil- Since I'm an indecisive prick, I won't chose one of these games and just name them all.

Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time (N64)
Golden Sun (GBA)
Fire Emblem (through most nintendo consoles)
Left 4 Dead
World of Warcraft

Legend of Zelda, i have yet to meet one person who absolutely hates the game, and actually, it's probably one of the best games made.

Golden Sun, a semi-small rpg game franchise, that has a great story and that every gamer should experience something close to this game style.

Fire Emblem, Similar to above

Left 4 Dead, One of THE best zombie shootout games i have ever played.

World of Warcraft, and every gamer should experience a HUGE MMORPG
