I'm guessing some of you may be aware of Isabella Purves, people should be after what happened to her.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/edinburgh_and_east/8132642.stm

This lady died in her flat and may have lain there for up to five years.

Five fucking years. Usually I don't pay much attention to the news because it enrages me but I just noticed this on a newspaper someone had left at work today. It's so sad that no one bothered to check on her in all that time. This is what modern society is all about and I've been saying it for years.

No one gives a fuck about anyone else. It's that simple. No one cares. Apparently she lived in a 'close-knit community', which of course is a total lie. If that were the case she may still be alive now, or at least have been discovered sooner.

What are your thoughts? Do you think people are becoming more isolated from one another or are you one of the crazy ones who still thinks people give a shit?

I am going to go out and say that not everyone is isolated. People make the decision to be isolated from the rest of the world. My guess is at some point in the past her community tried to associate with her, but she chose not to. Yes someone should have found out about her sooner, but I would say that much of the fault is her's.

Depends on people's view of society. One can whine about not beng close enough to one another but any policy geared towards that direction ends up being called paternalistic, pandering, etc.

This isn't new, sadly. People do give a shit, they just don't realize sometimes what level things have sunk down to.

As long as people have the notion in their heads of "fuck 'em, they're idiots and don't get it so I don't need them," or "All I've ever needed is myself," things cannot move forward.

Sorry, but it's not "in" to care for your fellow man, or be neighborly. Just look at the U.S where people are debating seriously whether or not all human beings in the country should have health coverage.

Some things should come first, but sadly these days they just don't.

Where was this? The states? I could belive that! No im just kidding. And I have no idea whether the world is becoming more of an asshole or not cuz I dont pay attention to the real world. I would think so cuz of how corupt my generation is. I hope that its not too late for the next generation. Seriously what is wrong with our sosiety? I have talked to my parents and grandparents about the respect and responsiblities they had as kids and I compare that to today. Back then if they swore EVER they got smacked across the face. Now its part of every kids vocab and most parents dont seem to care. Also there was no nonsence about drugs, sex and booze. Maybe ciggarettes but thats cuz they didn't know any better. Back in my grandparent's days people were frowned apon for having kids out of wed-lock. Now teens are having babies like there is no tomorow. Do u see what I mean? No people dont give a shit anymore. Its all about our own personal gain, fuck the person beside you they dont matter! You want what you want and you better have it now! You dont give a shit that some old lady died congrad-a-fucking-lations it happends every day, every hour, every minute, every second. We as a global population do not care about the millions who die every day cuz just as many are being born. Why morn people when you still have to keep breathing? Sure its sad if some 8 year old girl died, or your relatives. But what about other people? How many families are being torn apart by death? Like seriously? Do any of you really truely care? Sure it's sad someone died. But I dont know her. You dont know her. So what is the point of getting all worked up cuz some lady died. Im not crying right now, nor am I sad. I dont care cuz no one cared about her and her isolated life. So the point of this thred is to either morn some lady no one knows or complain about how life is right now. If you dont mind me Im going to get lost in either a movie, a video game or a book so Im not reminded about how fucked we are as a global population.

To be fair, she was 90, and as far as I can tell from the article dead of natural causes.
It's not like someone shot her, or there was an uproar. They probably thought "she's an old person she wants to be left alone." And IDK about you, but I don't go to neighbors randomly, or people I met only once and ask how they're doing.

You know, it's so easy to just say "OMG, you guys suck! You should've checked on her!", but a lot of the times, when this stuff happens, it's usually the dead guy's fault, for being a friendless anti-social nitwit.

I can only imagine the smell.

Meh I knew a lady who was in her 50s and she was found dead 2 years and some odd months later in her home. They only found her because someone broke into her house and found her body.

And now, a massively ironic answer:

"You remember that one British Skier bloke? David Whats-his-name?"

I always get a bit annoyed when people sum up the whole of society based on indivdual random events. Like when Jeremy Paxman kept saying that all that shit with the man in Austria keeping his daughters in his cellar. He basically blamed Austria for it happening.

society has been much worse. The declaration of war on Germany in 1914 was generally seen as a good thing by alot of people. Thank god we don't think like that anymore.

My thoughts exactly.

Haven't read the story myself, but these things happen. Elderly people distance themselves from society and dies all alone, because they were sad individuals who did not want contact with anyone but their own herd of cats.

And yes, the smell would definitely be horrible. It would most probably be a dead give-away.

No one noticed she was dead for that long?

Best. Murderer. EVER.
It was natural seemingly, bills were payed via debit, probably had no living family or friends in contact with her so no one really noticed or cared.

God imagine the smell, would you even be fully decomposed in that time blech >_>

Sounds like you are trying to make a poem or something. Toke me a bit to notice that was not a joke response. Was trying to find the punch line.
