This is an intriguing topic. You've stated clearly in the OP that you do not wish it to degrade into a flame war, you are going beyond the norm and asking why it happens which I admire.
Why indeed must people declare their football team/nation/continent/race and in this case possessions are somehow superior to the other Joe's preferences. The reason of "human nature" is a complete cop out as that encompasses a wide field of reasons in other areas too.
I think it begins because it can begin. Those with the foul mouthed, the shallow minds and the narrow visions who are somehow too afraid to look beyond the propaganda propagated by those on their side will feel their freedom of expression is just as valid as the next persons and know full well that nobody can stop them being a complete dick.
The moment you don't fear authority or understand and utilise respect 'n decency to those around then you've well and truly lost the plot and all remaining respect for yourself and from others around you

In all seriousness, I own an xbox and a wii but don't really like the PS3, why is it hard for some people to understand that?
I think it's more of a case of people throwing their controllers out of their prams and really going off on one who happen to own a different console than their own. I'm not particularly fond of the 360 but I don't start any level of hatred over it; I just find there are no games on it that would interest me really.Terminate421 said:

Comparing consoles it stupid. I enjoy some of the PS3 titles, hence I play my PS3. I love 360's online and I play all crossplatform multiplayer games on it.

Because people are of the belief that because they paid their money for a console, it must be better. And the only people who really have the right to participate in flame wars, people who own both, are (generally) the ones who do not.
