No amount of words would describe how angry I would be if any other man denied women the right to deck me in the face with the grace of an 18-wheeler after I did the same to them.

So while her methods of asking for money isn't the most genius of ideas, no, her intentions are not wrong and not something that needs to be swept under the rug, and each and every one of you motherfuckers who says otherwise is lower than the lowliest of worms.
umm... what? Don't think anyone here has said a damn thing about there being no issue at all. Most opposing her do so more because she is terrible and lacks any credibility or integrity. So I guess they would feel much the same as you about being allowed pay-back when it comes to having to listen to her one-sided biased bullshit and yet having an army of sympathizers try to deny them the right to call her out on the shit.

If you are referring to the game maker, well, he is an asshole. Though, so are the people who made the "punch this celebrity" games for the presidents, presidential candidates (including Palin), various famous people, Thomson, and many many others. Not sure saying he is an asshole is anything new or unknown to anyone though. Doesn't make her point any more justified then it made Bush's political decision any wiser or Bin Laden's actions any more justified. Rationality doesn't work that way.

I have not read the entire thread (20 pages, the internet must really care), but wanted to share my opinion on this, because like many people, I feel strongly about it.

Now if she wanted to say that the "video game community" was sexist, well then realize that by agreeing with her that you are admitting that you and every other person that plays games including herself is sexist.
Shes smart enough not to make that big a generalization but not so smart as to do the real research needed.

Im all for sex positive fems myself so I largely always find issue with her claims
Want me to link her twitter again? Cause i will. She equates trolls with gamers & is using broad strokes to generalize them as sexist.
https://twitter.com/femfreq/
Check June 12, 15, & pay attention to news articles linked there. Despite claiming to be a gamer, she has not stopped media supporting her from saying all gamers are pigs. While most people defender her when this hit the fan by saying 'shes not demonizing us chill out' she certainly has done a good deal to make gamers look bad.
so we are in agreement ok

OH BOY, now I get to confess that I'm in the videogaming minority in that I play videogames not just to indulge myself in shallow fantasy, but also to mesh reality with said fantasy! I see absolutely no greater purpose being titillated by titfighters wearing noodle-strings for armor other than getting my nether regions unreasonably stimulated. And that's without the part where the noodle-string gimmick actually serves as a well-deconstructed plot point or character point.

You seem to imply that making female characters closer to reality is a bad idea for the money, and while that's true, I have zero fucks to give about that. If it means less shallow boobs-for-brains and more fleshed out female characters, then more for me and less for those insufferably hormonal men whom many of which might as well be carbon copies of the same boys who gave me hell in my youth.

And for the record, I've not donated any money to Little Miss Anita. I happen to dislike the method in which feminist groups try to make that point, because let's face it, when was the last time a representative of a faction made some unbiased and shocking food for thought? I only support the fact that, yes, sexism in games is a problem, and I don't give a shit about how small and irrelevant the problem is. Problems are universal, and if it can bleed, then it can die horribly in a sick and twisted shower of bullets.

And you are what is wrong with the whole debacle here. Seriously. You look at what is going on from a very biased perspective (this being how it is reported to you), take one look at the comment section and go "yup, there is a problem". This is lazy intellectually and a horrible mentality. This is the same mentality that make people play up being a victim. Or antagonize trolls to keep it coming, as she has.
I?m terribly sorry if my existence necessitates a misogynistic response but I think they?d do perfectly fine without me. As for a biased perspective, it?s a little difficult to present the existence of a violent flashgame in such a way that draws easy conclusions and I?m not sure how you can possible claim any basis for an evidence of bias on this. It boggles my mind on how you could possibly feel there?s more to this display and makes me wonder what the hell you?re thinking. And I?m not talking about the wider picture just then between weird accusations of baiting and calling out and other things that just don?t stick.

Have you looked into the legitimate complaints about here at all? Have you assessed her stance, what she says or what she is implying? Nope, sounds like you gave a knee-jerk reaction. Congratulations, you are sheep.
Actually yes I have you arrogant twerp. Why would you think I hadn?t? Because I don?t agree with you? I disagree with a few of her views and I didn?t write about it in length in that post but my analysis and interactions (depressing interactions) with the backlash have firmly made up my mind and this latest display, good lord. You have presumed my knowledge and background with no basis whatsoever. Congratulations, you are a presumptuous prick.

Furthermore, you didn?t have the common courtesy to ask me about this before laying stupid insults at me and presuming to know me and my motivations. I have studied all her views, watched all videos, read her blog, and have done the same for those who oppose her and arrived at a conclusion. You jumping down my throat proves just the sort of knee-jerk reaction you?re stupidly trying to impose on me and others. So further congratulations are to be laid upon you for being a much truer sheep.

Not saying I support the asshats in her comment section at all. There is more then an "us or them" mentality. She is wrong in a number of reasons. Some people pointed that out, but because anita stirred up 4chan asshats beforehand, any criticism is lost in the wave of trolls. The way she justifies herself because of the trolls is what many take offence to. Would you like it if someone pointed at your city, picked the vilest asshole in it and said "look, everyone in that city is a horrible person because of this asshole right here represents it as a whole."
I couldn?t give a shit about 4chan and the sort of people who dwell there so I suppose I?m on her side on this as well. Oh I?m sure there?s a lovely community between the tentacle rape and child porn I found there, but I?m sure even the ?vilest asshole? in my city would have trouble competing with the behaviour we?ve seen in the past few weeks.

Honestly, you are a just a sad depressing person if you are so easily swayed in opinion.
You know nothing about me. Nothing. Not my background, education, lifestyle or views. It?s far more depressing that people like you exist; people who?re so quick to baselessly condemn without a talk first.

runic knight said:
for fuck's sake, if internet assholery is all it takes to make you part with money, I got a list of youtube channels a mile long with such douchebags and give me 5 minutes to spam over 4chan and stir the bee's nest, and I can make my own as well.
It?s a little more than ?internet assholery? as you put it. Something bigger and deeper is clearly going on and it?s a real shame it manifested like THIS. It?s pretty damn clear the need for this is far greater and frankly my donation will only be to spite people like you. Grounds for sheepishness on that basis is justified, but there are other things going on (not that you care to notice or ask.)

Her being trolled does not justify or validate her stance or position in the least. It stands and falls on it's own merit, and often it falls.
Yes. ?Her being trolled.? Have YOU looked at the backlash? It?s a bit more than that and clearly demonstrates something else is going on. Her encouragement of this wave of bile was little more than simply existing just as my own existence has been your empty, condescending rebuttal. From her own videos I found much to disagree with and was planning on being only mildly supportive (at least until we saw the true meat) but having talked with and examined just how much I disagree with the backlash, my position was finally clear and I have to oppose them. As for her argument on videogames, let?s watch a few more before we decide ?it often falls? hmm? I know that?s asking for a lot; your mind seems more firmly made up than my own.

runic knight said:
If you are so full of sympathy for a mess she not only encouraged but manipulated, then you have no integrity and I would begin to wonder if such compassion is not based on her sex itself...
And finally, a completely unfounded accusation. I only care because she?s a woman? Well I can never disprove that, so you win! Oh, maybe it?s a projection of your own sexism? My support for thinking so is better than your reasons to think what you do because you have no basis, but the fact you make such a wild accusation gives me the basis I need.

This shit needs to be confronted, as do people like you. But I think your post has ticked all the boxes. One, final, congratulations, is in order.

Yeah there?s a BIT more to it than that dude. This is beyond trolling. As for your own ?trolling? (which I?m sorry for, whatever the view was) I seriously doubt it?s been QUITE same reaction. You would?ve made The Guardian to. Not to mention it would have to be something I felt very strongly about.

Still, maybe I should?ve gone into more detail after all.
Serves me right I suppose. :-/

This isn't beyond trolling THIS IS trolling, she wants people to feel sorry for her and donate.
Well I have a major problem with this "trolling." I think its bang out of line. In fact, perhaps there?s just a semantic misunderstanding between us of the term ?trolling? (which I never used.) I think harassment is a better term. I also think the attitudes expressed show a lot more than they intended.

Pointing out how loathsome this flashgame is and screaming ?what the fuck is wrong with you people? feels redundant and I?m glad it does.

Although I had mixed feelings what with looking at all of her earlier works and both me and mine are what Americans would call ?Liberal,? the backlash and the reactions against Sarkeesian not only firmly put me on her side, but made me decide to take up feminism again.

I?d fucking donate if I could afford to.
It's too late to donate. And you don't have to take sides you can agree that both sides suck. Sometimes bad people get in fights with other bad people.
You?re absolutely right of course. The willingness to donate is more motivated out of shame and spite. Perhaps not the best reasons, but the motivations to not donate are motivated out of finding worthier charities and me being a cheapskate so...

And yes, you?re right again; my feelings towards her were indeed mixed, but I want to see what she has to say. Perhaps I just had a more positive reaction to her other stuff than you and others, and I want to hear a fresh perspective.

I just realized something. Can Nintendo sue Anita for copyright violation for her $50 pledge award?

That is clearly Nintendo's property, and she is clearly making money off of it.

Someone disagrees with someone on the internet, and expresses it in a somewhat creative way.

Ya know, no ones shooting her or burning a cross on her front lawn, so who gives a fuck?

Woah there Kitetsu, just having a conversation with ya. Also as this forum topic has revealed, a lot of people including myself have dealt with the social ostracism and other greater problems. Everyone has problems but it is certainly petty and full of prejudice that somehow forcing developers to create the product you want that overrides their own personal desires in the product they wish to develop. Especially when you strip the artist from their original motivations and desires and where you agenda is some perverted form of revenge that you would damn millions of innocent bystandards compared to the very specific people that have wronged you and in the long run probably don't affect you in your daily life anymore. Don't the millions of other people that enjoy playing games that the developer produces the game the developer wants to produce matter?

I'd just like you to consider that cause honestly your second paragraph scares me when it comes to the motive. I can understand the cynicism from the first paragraph but please don't take as what I'm talking to you as some sort of adversarial position. I'd prefer to have a conversation with you and where we discuss our own thoughts and feelings on the subject rather than spending time supporting or dissenting Anita's project. Anita isn't here and she won't give a damn on the things that we clearly understand to be a more nuanced situation that a black and white issue over the discussion of sexism in video games.
I've lived most of my life alone, by choice or by circumstance, or absolutely isolated and utterly punished for both that and expressing a taste more distinct than others, also for most of my life. What did you expect me to think?

And you know what the most hilarious part about this is? If I was the solo game developer I keep boasting my aspirations for (you know, the part I couldn't get to because I'm dumber than bricks), I wouldn't be so jaded and cynical about the fact that every game is either sexist, pro-human fantasy propaganda that's pretty much "kill all horrifying parodies of furries in the name of mankind", or some other unmentioned shallow problem not worth mentioning because everybody else is so busy fighting against "murder simulator" pitchforkers. At least then, I'd be comfortable playing my own game, by myself, in my own bedroom, since no one cares or wants to.

Except I don't. Even if I do, these thoughts are still going to linger on, and I'd still feel completely alone, all because of those hormonal bastards.

Again, why are you even talking about the U.S.? The statistic you cited regarding police reports of rape in Japan is not an adequate measure of the prevalence of sexual assaults there. 90% of Japanese women who are groped on trains do not report it to the police. America has absolutely nothing to do with it.
America has everything to do with the idea she puts out that Japan has much worse sex crimes because of the advertising they have there and the media's tolerance in general.
This is everything Sarkeesian has to say about America in the entire video:

"Frankly I'm surprised we don't have [women's-only passenger cars] in the U.S., because of the levels of harassment that women face here as well."

It's beyond me how you possibly could have interpreted that as "Japan has worse sex crimes than the U.S. because of advertising and media."

Treblaine said:
"police reports of rape in Japan is not an adequate measure of the prevalence of sexual assaults there."

Wow, that's an amazing piece of evidence you have there *cough*sarcasm*cough*, but I have a counter-argument:

"police reports of rape in Japan IS an adequate measure of the prevalence of sexual assaults there."

See? Baseless assertions can be made by anyone.
That was in fact my conclusion, not a piece of evidence. It's based on just about everything else i've said in this thread so far. If you're not going to bother reading my posts then there's no point in trying to argue with me.

This thread's moving fast so i'll save you the trouble of backreading:

1. Sex crimes differ from country to country, both in the letter of the law and how the law is enforced.
2. Rape and train-groping are not necessarily the same thing.
3. Most train-gropings are not reported to the police.

Therefore the number of rapes reported to Japanese police tells you very little about the scope of the train-groping problem there.

Treblaine said:
If 90% of women don't report groping on trains (as you claim) then THAT is the problem. Unwanted sexual molestation is a serious crime that must be detected and stopped. If the abusers go unpunished and emboldened they are more likely to take it further, the abusers are still out there unstopped, more segregation will be needed in all aspects of life.
Then segregation can't make the problem any worse, because gropers already largely go unpunished. Segregation is a last-ditch measure to stop the abusers by taking away their opportunity to abuse.

No, the problem is and always has been men who grope. Japanese trains tend to be very crowded, which can make it very difficult for even the victim, let alone security cameras or a police officer nearby, to identify the perpetrator. That of course makes enforcing the law difficult, and if there's nothing the police can do anyway, then very few victims will bother to report. This is why your "good Samaritan" law doesn't work, by the way. You can't prove someone failed to report a crime if you can't prove there was a crime to report. (I would go so far to say that the reason America doesn't have a problem with harassment on trains is because so few Americans utilize mass transit to begin with.)

There's two long-term solutions: Redesign Japan's transportation systems to reduce the crowds (virtually impossible), and raise a generation of men who respect women's boundaries and wouldn't assault them even if they knew they could get away with it. (Part of the project of most mainstream feminisms.)

There's only one short-term solution: providing safe spaces where women can travel without fear of harassment: women's only cars. It's nowhere near a perfect solution, but it's the only immediately effective one the train companies have at their disposal.

Seems like a pretty clear-cut case of Fair Use to me. Also I'm not sure it would be a good PR move for the billion dollar company to sue an independent blogger who was just the target of a large-scale harassment campaign.
