Pan's Labyrinth, and to a lesser extent, Martyrs. The latter just made me incredibly depressed for days though.

So I finally got around to watching No Country For Old Men, and holy shit. I feel like I've been punched in the stomach. I don't think I've ever used those words to compliment a film before.

Anyone else have an experience with a film or game that just... floors you?

[small]I'd give more to discuss but I don't want to ruin it, and my brain is still reeling from all that...[/small]
if that film got to you it suggests we have similar tastes, so go out and buy Touching the Void (2003). seriously. go to amazon now and buy it.

oh and definitely look at The Greatest (2008) with Pierce Brosnan.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Now words can truly describe it, you must see it yourself to fully understand it. I still have no clear idea of what I watched
its just a jump to the left...

I think I just sat still for a few minutes after watching American Beauty. Digesting what happened was just quite difficult. It's weird, because it's about a crappy life in the suburbs, but it had the feeling of one of those movies that you describe, OP.

Oh! Blood Diamond was the most recent. Damn, I was almost in tears by the end of it. It was depressing, and hardly in a good way, considering the movie is based in truth.

And also Catch me If You Can was really really good. And Shutter Island. (I'm on a Leonardo Kick right now, can you tell?)

This isn't from a movie or game. Surprisingly, It's from youtube and it's one of the most gut-wrenching things I've ever watched.
It's a story from an American soldier who fought at the Battle of the Bulge.

I thought No Country for Old Men was horrible. I didn't even know what happened in the end. At all.
Maybe I should re watch it.
Right now I just cannot think of a movie. I don't know why though, I should know a few, I feel like I knew a few. But its not coming to me.

Have you read the book? I've read the book but not seen the movie. But I had the same effect when I finished the book. Cormac McCarthy is a great author.

The Stand. I don't know what it was, but when I finished that book, it was just like... "Where am I?" is the best way to describe it.

I haven't seen No Country For Old Men but my parents did, and they said it was terrible. But if you say it left you feeling like you were punched in the stomach, I'm guessing it was emotional...makes me want to see it now.

The ending to The Mist. That ending can pretty much go eff itself. There is a limit.
Oh man, I hate this movie. It was at least decent...until the end. I walked around pissed off all day thanks to that movie. Dx

Anyway, movies that left me feeling emotionally drained, huh? I remember Man on Fire and Ladder 49 did it, but those were so long ago that I don't remember them very well.
More recently would be Remember Me. I bawled like a baby during the last five minutes of that movie. The ending comes out of nowhere but it's so brilliant.

I know I'm gonna get killed for this ... but the ending to Remember Me was completely out of left field. You get this sick sort of feeling, like you know what's coming, and then it really hits you and it's not fair that this sort of chick flick gets such a decent ending.

Then again, maybe I liked it for the same reasons I liked Braveheart and Titanic ...

Slumdog Millionaire was definitely one of the first movies that really affected me after I left the theater. I had to really think about it and it really opened my eyes to how terrible life is for some people... and it really made me appreciate my own life. Pursuit of Happyness was kind of the same except it wasn't as heavy.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and SiCKO by Michael Moore actually helped change my perspective on the health care debate... I know, I know, it's like claiming that an Uwe Boll film got someone into video gaming but SiCKO was really more actual things going on instead of dumb opinions thrown about. And it more or less inspired me to do a bit more research so it wasn't just that film that changed my ideas... but it certainly helped.
