But that can be said about - ANYTHING -
I've had discussions with several people who are intelligent yet stubborn as a mule when it comes to arguments about this and that and I am sure as hell that you can be stubborn as a mule as well if the argument would be about something that you feel strongly about.

Imagine person A is a person who believes in the nazi ideals, person B is an anti-nazi who thinks that everyone who thinks like person A should be shot and a person who is neutral and thinks they're both idiots, person C.

Each of these will stubborningly argument about how they are right.
- How can their discussion and argument be productive at all? -

With that said, arguments are never suppose to be productive. It's all about pointing out why opinion 1 is better than opinion 2. Discussions however, can be productive. With that in mind, the whole quote "Never argue with an idiot" is just an excuse to never argue at all because everyone else are more idiotic than oneself in ones mind.

I have a friend who is Muslim. I think the Muslim religion is the bane of the earth. We argue all the time, and our opinions on this matter never change. We are not idiots however, so when we argue we present facts and points of view to back up our ideology. Though our stances never change we both are constantly learning something new about ourselves and each other through intellectual discussion, and (me more so than him) learn new facts about the issue and why we feel the way we do. I doubt we will ever change our stance on this issue, but this is an example. We argue all the time and when done intelligently with facts even if one of us "wins" the argument the other person learns something new about the issue and doesn't just "lose" the discussion.

Idiots don't use facts, they don't try to convince you or persuade you to their thinking. Frequently it's simply a matter of "you're wrong", "look it up", "I already know I'm right". I actually like debate club (had one at my high school) but the idiots that sometime showed up...fucking hell. DX
