Well I don't know if "fan" is accurate, I listen to metallica as a part of an extensive playlist (somewhere around 60GB mp3s), but hey.
Favorite song: Fear of the dark.
Favorite album: Not a clue xD

My Favorite Metallica album is definately ...And Justice For All, it is an underrated album with some really sick songs on it. It has the Shortest Straw, Blackened, The Title track, and not to mention the extremely popular, One.

A favorite song by Metallica though is just too hard to pick, i love all of their songs too much.

Song: Battery
Album: And Justice For All...

Btw, a Metallica/Megadeth battle would end up with Megadeth going into a coma in the first round, and coming out of it half paralyzed with a song of the Lord in it's heart. By this time, Metallica would have developed senile dementia, forgetting all of what they were and why they rocked in favor of new songs worthy of playing at Konocti Harbor-Resort and Casino the day after Huey Lewis and the News.

And Lars Ulrich's head would finally have disappeared up his ass, and folks would have realized what a pale excuse for a drummer he truly is...

EDIT: Speaking of Master of Puppets (the song), if you've heard of a band called Trivium, you may have heard their version (which is not really a version as it is more a note-for-note recreation). Pretty impressive to hear someone other than old Metallica play kick ass metal. Highly recommended!

I won't even pretend to be able to pick a song. I might have to go for ...And Justice for favorite complete album, though, even though a bunch of songs I really like are on other ones. For some odd reason, I've never really like Kill 'Em All, despite owning all the early (read: good) albums on tape since...well, since back when music still came on tapes. Heh. Always liked the rest of their stuff from the 80s, though, and I'm one of those weird people who still mostly liked them all the way through Reload, even if they weren't as good anymore at that point.

St. Anger was so bad that I totally gave up hope on them ever doing anything worth my time again, and after hearing how atrociously mixed/mastered the first single from Death Magnetic was, I never bothered listening to the album (although I did kind of want to try grabbing the version from GH, which is supposed to sound massively better, but I kind of forgot about it). The clipping is so bad that it's almost unlistenable for me. I thought it must've just been a badly-encoded MP3 my friend sent me (LARS SMASH), but then the official release sounded like ass, too...

Oh. Can't forget to mention S&M as one of the albums I particularly like, along with the earlier stuff. I'm a sucker for weird, hybrid forms of music like that (and well-done mashups of things you wouldn't think would work together, and bizarre cross-genre covers of songs that shouldn't sound good but do). I guess that's probably why all the wacky metal coming out of Europe over the past several years makes me giddy like a schoolgirl, like Epica (and maybe stuff like Finntroll, but I haven't gotten around to listening to enough yet to make up my mind).

I'm an old school metallica fan even though I don't really listen to them anymore.

Album-Reload

That said, I don't think Reload is their best metal album, that'd be puppets. But the layers of harmony and dissonance in reload make it the more listenable album. Musically it's very diverse. There's some really interesting stuff going on there.

Gods, if I wasn't so disgusted by what Metallicash has become... And Justice For All was the last tolerable album. After that it's pure Pop trash. But you asked:

Fav Album: Kill 'Em All
Fav Song: Disposable Heroes

I'd have to say Master of puppets has more songs I like on it, but my favorite Metallica song ever is Blackened. (Or nothing else matters)
