Since 2001?

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

For better or for worse, it shaped the morden FPS.
Not really...

Forget about this? Every aspect except weapon customization.

I played the hell out of Resident Evil 4, God of Wars 1 & 2 were fun as hell, Colossus was thought provoking and a great argument for the "Games As Art" crowd, but I have to tip my hat to Red Dead Redemption. Stunning presentation, a perfect blend of gameplay and story and the first game to genuinely move me beyond the time I stopped playing it. A spiritual cousin of Deadwood, the player could choose to be a noble symbol of freedom lost to the forces of "civilization" or and avatar for lawless anarchy that eventually had to end so a stable society could flourish. It created a world I cared about, wanted to live in and evoked a genuine sadness when it came to an end. Perfect.
The most apt description I've heard thus far, good sir.

Shadow of the Colossus. Simply unforgettable.

It really was among the greatest games I've ever played, a close second would be Half-Life 2, but I think you would guess as much from my name

World of Warcraft.
Sure, it has loads of flaws and cannot stand up to most singleplayer games in terms of gameplay and such.
But it is the only game that I've played for over 3000 hours, the only game I've played for over 8 years running, the only game that's gotten me friends (actual, real-life friends), and the only game that's gotten me a girlfriend.

Gonna have to side with Mastachief on that one; Halo Set the stage for COD's multiplayer; without Halo becoming mind-numbingly popular, COD4 may have never thought to put as much into its multiplayer as it did.

Also, for my picks, call it Skyrim fever, but the one game I've kept coming back to over the last ten years was Oblivion. I'm STILL rolling new characters and experimenting with different styles of play.

I've been a gamer for 20 years now, and my favourite game of all time falls out of this decade (Cliched I know, but it's FFVII. It may not be all that sophisticated any more, but it was my first FF game and the depth and complexity of the storyline and characters was frankly life changing for me*). Favourite game of the decade... that's really tough. It's got to be a toss up between the freedom of Morrowind and the nigh-on perfect pacing (of both plot and gameplay) of Alan Wake.

*Although, that said, I still hold a special place in my heart for Ultima 8. Such an underrated game.

Fuck, I can't pick one...
Gotta go back to 2001 to see what kind of range I'm dealing with here.

If we're going favoruite, I'm going to go with Wind Waker. Many people say it'd be the best Zelda if it weren't for the sailing; I fucking loved the sailing. Therefore, favourite game. Plus, it looks nicer than the majority of the stuff from this decade.

Halo 1. great gameplay, solid story, helped set the trend for the modern FPS, generally all around fun place to be.

I have been musing on it for a while, cheers :). Truth is there are a stack of games I could have picked, some of which had more fun with (Half Life 2, Mass Effect, the Arkhams) but as a total package RDR was just the ideal blend of what I look for in a game

Does Orange Box count? That, if it does. Followed by Modern Warfare. Honorable mentions to Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Bioshock.

I don't know. Depends on the genres I guess.

RTS

Homeworld 2

FPS

Quake 3/ Quake Live. Quake 3 may not have come out in 2001 but it's been active since the inception of Quake Live which duly took over from it. It's been dominat continuously both in terms of playerbase and competition.

Western RPG

KOTOR

I'll finish this when I can be bothered >_>

Dear God... Morrowind? Shadow of the Colossus? Portal? Dragon Age: Origins? Can't chose a single game...
So I'll chose a random one I love... lets go with... Jade Empire? Nah...
THIS QUESTION.
I shall answer now... NONE: A DECADE IS TOO LONG TO CHOSE JUST ONE.

There have been quite a few great games this decade: Portal 1 & 2, Mass Effect 1 & 2, KotOR 1 & 2, Morrowind, BioShock...

I can't come up with one top game! So many of them had so many things going for them! I think I just have to say that this was a great decade for gaming.

Ratchet and clank up your arsenal for me because it was the first game in which I wanted to complete everything.

My favorite game since '01, huh?

Hmm...

There have been such a number of great games it's hard to choose. The one I loved the most was Metro 2033, so many things were done so very well, aside from the gunplay.

Otherwise...Mass Effect. Don't get me wrong, 2 was amazing, but the original is where it all began. And to think my initial response to a gameplay trailer was "Pfft, Gears of War with psychic powers and talking."

Oh god, a game of the decade, this is extremely tough. Mainly because I don't remember even half the games I've played since '01 but also because I find it hard to pick favourites.

Some of my favourite games have to include Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Origins (Yes, RPG fan, I know), Star Wars: Battlefront 2, Star Wars: Republic Commando, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Star Wars fan too), and of course Half Life 2.

Note that all of these games have single-player modes, I don't really consider multi-player-only games as that great because it doesn't really convey anything, it's not a story, it's not art (in my opinion). Multi-player games are about understanding the game mechanics, adapting your game around it, and then simply sharpening your skills. Single-player games, while not playable for as many hours, are simply richer in actual content and as such I consider them superior games.

Out of all this, despite how much I absolute LOVE KotOR, I have to go with Dragon Age: Origins. It's simply an enormous game, offers a slice of REAL RPG, immerses you completely in a cinematic experience and grows with you. It is one of the greatest games I have ever played, and that is even more amazing when you consider the fact that I recently started playing Dragon Age: Origins so the nostalgia factor is completely removed.

If you're looking for an experience that might be tough, sometimes bothersome, but extremely rewarding and enjoyable, play through Dragon Age: Origins and complete every single side-quest you can find. Once you finally beat it, there's no feeling that you missed something or that the game is incomplete. It is simply a full, incredible gaming journey.
