For the older gamers (10+ years of gaming), what is your GOTD (game of the decade)?

Tough question. I think I would have to go with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic as the only game I spent one hundred hours of my life on with nary a twinge of regret. There are longer games, flashier games, deeper games, more innovative games, but few with such a remarkable degree of polish and exquisite pacing.

2001-2011? I'd go with Dwarf Fortress. Not only is it a great game in itself (behind it's torturous interface), it's been around long enough to challenge and inspire the developers behind other games as well, including Minecraft. It's going to be one of those rarely-played-yet-influential "classics" like Starflight, Dune 2, or Planescape. Once proceduralism takes off, a lot of fingers are going to be pointed back at it.

Morrowind. Nothing immersed me more, probably never will but I'll sure as hell give Skyrim a chance.

Runner-up for me would be Fable. The first one.

Some pre-2001 games would be Alpha Centauri and Pharoah.

Game of the Decade.
...
Oh god, I just realized my go to answer is too old. What happened?

Im going to have to say Neverwinter Nights (Hordes). I still play the game, and thoroughly enjoy it, despite the nine years that have past.

I simply would be lying if I didn't say that Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the most perfect game I have ever played. Perfect gameplay, perfect story, perfect presentation, perfect visuals and audio. It almost makes me feel inferior to admit that it's not my FAVORITE game. If I was the epitome of a sophisticated gamer, no guilty pleasures or anything of the sort, I would play Snake Eater all day and night, every day for the rest of time. In short, the game is a masterpiece.

In my experience, which is by no means perfect as I have overlooked many gems and am in the process of back-tracking to play them at super low prices, I would have to say Psychonauts is my GOTD. It had quality of gameplay/storyline, it had quantity, it had characters that I actually gave two damns about their backstory and where they were headed. For me that has to be the best game I've played from this last decade.

Sidenote: My experience in gaming goes back to when I was super young playing U.N. Squadron (if you have to ask...) at midnight trying not to wake my parents with my playing. I am now in my 20s.

Oblivion or Fallout 3.
Or Mass Effect 2. Or maybe Windwaker.
Or maybe it doesn't matter because the best game of the decade is coming out on Friday!!!!!

Hmm, good question. I would probably say that Counter Strike: Source is comfortably the game I have played the most. But the game I have enjoyed the most, that is very dificult. I would be able to narrow it down to one of The Sims (mainly the first series but I liked Sims 2 also), Mount and Blade Vanilla or Morrowind. To narrow it down any further would be impossible I think. All are such good games.

Skies of Arcadia. I got it on the Dreamcast (oohh yeah!) when I was 11 (in 2001), nearly got to the end, my friend accidentally deleted my save, then a few more tries later I still hadn't finished it when my dreamcast went bust. Even after getting a new one. Then it came out on gamecube and I tried again, but lost a bit of interest somehow. But then, in 2008, after telling my friends this they urged me to finish it, and watched every hour by coming to my house every night. I finally finished it that year and since then have done it again this year.

Its just the game that holds deep in my mind, and that I'll never stop wanting to play it again.

Valkyrie Chronicles was similar, although I've only done that through twice.

I've been gaming for over 25 years, and the one game that stands out above all others for me is Morrowind.

I feel like I'm neglecting so many other amazing titles by naming just one, but out of all my other favorites, I don't think I will ever see another Morrowind with the things I liked about it. I can trust that there will be an adventurous indie dev that will make spiritual clones of all my other favorites.

Going to go with Knights of the Old Republic, came out 2003 if I remember right. Love that game so much. Great story, great voice acting, great gameplay, pretty much everything about that game is great.

Aw nutz. You meant *this* decade?

Uh.. N64 Goldeneye?

Yes! I had a lot of fun with that.
Well crap! What year is this, anyway??

I want to give BioShock and Fallout 3 both honorable mention. They were each missing something, making them not quite perfect.
(Which I will capriciously blame on their being designed for consoles.)
But the winner is:

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

I will never tire of playing the game mods.
(Plus I save so much money by playing games with all the lights out!)

On the off chance that someone bothers to read to page 15 or so, I will contribute my personal favourite games. They may not be the 'best' but they are my favourite.

I would have to choose between:
Just Cause 2
Red Alert 2
GTA San Andreas
RDR
And preemptively, Saints Row 3.

I dunno, I think out of those it would have to be RA2. I just sank so much time into that.

1990 - 2011...I don't know the decade but FF1 for the Nintendo, it was the first game that I owned, and thus the game that sucked me into gaming.

Wow, this one is a toughie. I'd say PS:T, but that's not in the last decade so I'll go with Morrowind instead.
