What the US needs, overall, to become a great cosplaying nation:
1. Easy access to tips on how to do makeup for characters.
2. More emphasis on correct body type for cosplay
3. Easy access to accurate cosplaying costumes so that everything doesn't have to be hand made or ordered from china.
4. Lack of interest in perfection in cosplay. Cosplay is only a minor part of US anime conventions. You don't go to a convention merely to dress up, so there are lots of other interests that get in the way of focusing on that perfect outfit.
I most heartily agree with you on these points, especially number 2. Cosplaying in the U.S. would not be so looked down on if people started dressing up as characters with similar features and body types. Paying attention to the materials and colors used in the costumes would be a great boon as well. Cosplay shops would be helpful, but most online cosplay stores have terrible options and use lackluster materials, and do things like make multilayer outfits into one layer (InuYasha's robe of the fire rat) or use the completely wrong color (Last time I checked, Penelo's jumper was black, not blue [http://www.cosplaymagic.com/fifaxii12pec.html]). Unfortunately, nothing will change until american anime fans show much more than a half-assed, passing interest in cosplay.

Sometimes I look through CosplayMagic for fun. Their stuff is so bad.

EDIT: Look what I found, lol. [http://www.cosplaymagic.com/fifaviicrcoz.html]

You see, the thing about cosplay is that quite a few outfits in Japanese cartoons/comic books/video games look really dumb even within context of their fictional worlds.

So therefore, said outfits would dumb in reality. If not even dumber.

I cosplay but I will post my own cons and pros to it, so on. For me cosplaying is doing your best to one make a pretty freaking badass costume, and two being as much of the physical embodiment of the character. Though true when it comes to anime it's pretty much impossible to have HUUUUGE eyes and big foreheads, and natural blue hair, BUUUUT you can come close. For me in a few weeks I am going to a local convention where I live where I have been invited to go. I'm cosplaying Felicia Hardy- Black Cat though I am not comic book in general appearance I believe I can pull her off well, that's besides the 5'11" full figured look, it's also the hours of blood sweat and tears I put in at the gym to really be able to squeeze into a black vinyl cat suit.

Pros to cosplay:
Understanding of the character and the correct potrayal. Meaning you're short you cosplay a short character, you're tall you cosplay a tall character etc. etc.

Willing to put in time and work physically (gym!) as well as either finding a costume designer or making your own.

Realizing you are NOT the absolute best, and that you are NOT the only one cosplaying the character.

Being humble and appreciating everyone who tries their best as well.

Showering, good hygine, washing your damn costume so it doesn't stink like nasty 4-day old B.O.!!!!!

Knowing what body type you have, and finding a character similiar, or if the character doesn't have the same as yours, adapting and becoming similiar to the character's physique.

Cons:
People who are so cocky, think they are absolutely the best, and make everyone else who cosplays feel bad. This I'm talking about those who are great at their craft with making a costume, but to those that say aren't, they make sure to point out what they have done wrong and how they'd never do that to their own. Be humble!

Fat fangirls who cosplay male characters and do that Yaoi shit! Breaking news! If those characters were real, and they were all about being gay, guess what?! They aren't inviting you to the threesome.

Mass gathering of creepy fanboys that refuse to look above the neckline. Actually... as a female cosplayer fanboys generally creep me out. Especially the ones that have bad teeth, stink, and STALK ME DURING THE DAYS OF THE CON! I've called security had you escorted out once before, do it again, I call the authorities. Please, please, PLEASE!!!! All fangirls and fanboys if you like the character don't creep out the professional cosplayers out.

Old people cosplaying! Rather creepy to see some old guy cosplay and then be around a bunch of tweens, especially when it has a strong female fanbase and there tends to be young girls that flock to the 'characters' attention.

Not being in the best physical shape for the costume.

Bad costume or not, not being there! Make it memorable who you were, it's great that way.

Yeah that's all I have really as for cosplaying for my point.

I'm surprised at the negativity to cosplay in general. I'd think a forum mainly centered around gaming would be more understanding towards basically what amounts to another hobby.

Yes, I enjoy cosplay. I've done it twice now, once to an anime convention back in High School around 7 years ago, and more recently, to Penny Arcade Expo East as the BLU Sniper. Yes, I plan on doing it again (thinking about either Nick from L4D2 or Guybrush Threepwood from the new Tales of Monkey Island(tm))I convinced 3 other friends to join me, and we went as a group. Picture included, I'm the guy on the left.

I'm not the best, and I don't expect anybody to have a drop dead gorgeous cosplay in order to be able to do so. I think it is about showing either what you can do crafting wise, or showing your enjoyment of a particular venue. Even if you aren't a crafter, or your funds don't allow you to do something as grandiose as you would want, I think the fact you did it anyway speaks a lot for your character, no matter how it looks. Even the "gross" ones take courage to do, regardless.

Cos play is fine . . . just as long as it's done by scantily clad young ladies with little to no shame and loose morals.

If you cross-dress while at a convention, you're still a transvestite.
Also an example of great cos-play: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dXYQ8ISkmQ&feature=related

Why should I care if you want to dress up as fictional characters? Why should you care what I think about it?
So basically, you're saying "I'm not interested in this thread, and won't post on it." Nice contribution, bro.

Holy fuck, there are some damn good lookin' girls in these pics...

If I ever go to one of these conventions, I'll go as Commander Sheperd. I'd have a legitimate reason to bone every female in sight.

People just need to find a proper body type character they can relate to.

Me, I'm big, and I have a bit of a belly on me. What would I be? Heavy Weapons Guy.

Or, if you use armor costumes, it is a lot easier to blend in. So Stormtroopers and Boba Fetts are better, if more expensive.

Thanks I truly try!

And BTW that's not at all what I said. Nice try though!

If done right and effort is put into the costume i dont mind.
Iv been thinking about Cosplaying myself but i wont do it unless i know i can pull the look off and my costume doesn't look like it was made by some guys blind mom.

What i do mind is when a Fat chick/guy tries to dress as...oh let me see.

Zero Suit Samus.
(I dare not look for the pic...i don't like nightmares)
It can get disgusting.

But when done right [http://www.ripten.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/metriod_cosplay1.jpg].

It can get pretty epic [http://lh4.ggpht.com/_BirvUCzeN8s/SdG-yyEXSjI/AAAAAAAABBo/2horJWPNGiA/bleach_-_ulquiorra_schiffer_and_halibel.jpg].

I think it's kind of creepy, very weird, and etc. Unless it's done well, but that's so uncommon (especially around here) that I don't even acknowledge it as a possibility.

While only discovering what cosplay is recently, I can't say I have a problem with it.

I actually think it's kinda sexy sometimes.

It's just when it's done bad...

It's fucking horrible...*shivers*
What the hell are the meant to be?
