Driving to work this evening I saw a car with the mexican flag in the back window and this got me thinking. Should foreign flags be allowed to be flown in the US? I'm not talking about say the UN or embassies with foreign flags, or something in your car window(for example). But rather should people be allowed to fly say the mexican flag in place of the US flag? IE in your yard you fly the mexican flag without the American flag above it(as is the norm I believe).

I think even if legal it's extremely tacky. Your kind of saying I'm not american I'm X, and I don't even think enough of this country to even fly their flag.
america puts too much emphasys on its flag, its just a piece of cloth, that i bet is most often made in china.

While your at it you could make them say "Not America" instead of their birth countries name. They are as proud to be mexican as you are to be american and they want to fly their flag to say "Damn right im mexican/british/irish, i love the country i was born in". Imagine coming to england. Imagine not being able to fly the American flag, you would say it was an outrage not to be able to put up your countires colours. I imagine that America would stir up a sotrm in the name of being able to fly their flag in other countries instead of the countries flag, i dont think you want aother flag on top always to detract from it (you guys have a thing with flags dont you? Flag day or something). I love england far more than I love America, if i go there im flying the british flag, even if it is next to an american flag, not UNDER, to pay respects to the country i am in. This sounds rather oppresive dont you think? Im all for respecting the country im in but saying i cant fly my own colours instead is a bit extreme?

I'm just waiting on the day that an American flag is as illegal to fly as another one. You know the one I'm talking about.

Seriously though I may have to spend a term in the USA, and if I do, I'm flying the English flag from my house/apartment and I'll be damned before there's anything above it.

No, you're kind of saying 'I'm not american, I'm X, and I am proud of it'.

Patriotism isn't just for Americans you know.

The Us Airforce Bases in Germany always got their Flags flying here. I hardly saw a german one there. On Visitors days perhaps.

I dont get the fuzz about the flags generally, if they want they can raise the banner of Mordor (would be cool)above ours.

Of course it should be legal. It is their right to raise any flag they desire, and you want to take that away from them?

Where is your "freedom" now, OP?

I, too, have lived in Canada. For all their talk of a multi-culture, they are a poly-culture. The difference is that the cultures stay divided and stay in conflict. Quebec (the archetypal example) is at a constant state of odds with Anglophonic Canada. The Asians which settled in British Columbia are at odds with the more native population there. All of the above have serious complaints both to and from the most Native people. I have lived their, you are misdiscribing your own country to a humorous extent.
Are you telling me that in America everyone lives in harmonious multi-cultural neighborhoods? Or do the Hispanics live in one neighborhood, the Asians in another, the Black Americans in another, very much divided along economic and cultural lines? Even a number or southerners see themselves as seperate from the Yanks. (I found this odd as in the UK you are known collectively as Yanks). There are divides everywhere, in all nations. Telling people which flags they can and cannot hang doesn't bring poeple together.

One of their biggest theme parks is called "6 flags".

I always found the American Idolatry of the flag disturbing. So much for one nation under god. One nation under god, who is hung under the national flag. Pledging allegiance to the flag just seems weird and cult like to me.

Having said that I lived in Texas and I saw far more confederate and state flags than national flags. Talking of division, every second person I met in Texas, once they got over my accent would let me know how they considered themselves "Texan" first and let me know that they are the only state inthe union with the abiility to leave if they chose to.

There isn't really anything wrong with it. If people are proud of their heritage, and live in the US, then they have the right to fly their flag.

Considering i spent a great deal of my youth with a Norwegian flag hanging from our house side flagpole (sometimes a Swedish one too) I'm okay with it. He's just celebrating his heritage or country of origin.

There's a massive bank headquarters in this town that runs like 15 different flags in front of it's building for all the different countries it deals with except when football season starts then they have one USA flag and 14 flags with this on it

I find this to be more obnoxious

Oh it doesnt matter, however the outlook can be important. Mexican Immigrants protested in California about an anti-immigrant law a while back and the first time around they marched to protest its passing they ALL had Mexican flags. That looked bad in the publics eye, who wondered why this country should do anything for these people who dont even hold up the U.S. flag.

So they had another march, with one American flag... It was upside down.

The Bill passed.

Very much agree with you actually. I'm British and if i moved to America, i would want to fly the Union Jack! But to show respect to the country i'm in i prolly would also put up the stars and stripes up aswell!

its just a sign of respect.

Pretty sure 6 flags was called such because the original park had 6 attractions.

I guess me being a big goofy american makes me blind to showing respect for a symbol That almost anyone reguardless of origin or locale in this country can get behind. (sturgon's law applies of course)

as for Flag day I'm about 90% certain England (not the UK) has one too as they were celebrating it when I was there years ago it was like april 22nd or 23rd. Lots of countries have a flag day usually to celebrate the adoption of the flag or some other unifying event.

I have lived in Texas and am aware of the fervor that exists though that 'we can secede' thing is an urban legend, No such provision is found in the current Texas or US Constitution. People say that based on the fact that texas' constitution states "Texas is a free and independent State, subject only to the Constitution of the United States" whereas pretty much every other state also lists congress and the president as well as the federal constitution.

The fuck? Were not allowed to fly the Union Jack anymore? Did I miss a meeting?

OT: I dont see a problem with foreign flags being flown. Live and let live as they say. Hell, we even let the Welsh fly their flag :p

Good on you! It'll be a conversation starter* and get you more casual tail.

*Except in the South, any town with a population under about 50,000, or a median income under 35,000 USD per household. Then you'll just get your apartment burnt down.

I wish I knew the answer to yours and now my problem in regards to the UK.
