I always found the American Idolatry of the flag disturbing. So much for one nation under god. One nation under god, who is hung under the national flag. Pledging allegiance to the flag just seems weird and cult like to me.
Having said that I lived in Texas and I saw far more confederate and state flags than national flags. Talking of division, every second person I met in Texas, once they got over my accent would let me know how they considered themselves "Texan" first and let me know that they are the only state inthe union with the abiility to leave if they chose to.
