What was subjectively turned into a xenophobic comment is actually a truth. The corporations in Japan function under different rules and and a CEO that doesn`t share this mentality is destined to fail or bring the corporation to bankruptcy.
Read a bit on how Japanese corporations work and are structured and you`ll find they are quite different from our definition.
From what I gather, this japanese culture is what is currently killing Japan's economy, and they brought a foreigner exactly to bring some change. I don't know if he did a good or a bad job while he were at it, and I doubt that anyone on this thread knows Sony internally well enough to judge on this matter.
However, I see where they are coming from, and I can also see why this ex-exec might be afraid for Sony's future. Stringer said once that he was brought up as a CEO with the difficult task of firing a lot of people. He was told that since he was a foreigner, it wouldn't be as hard for him to fire Japanese workers. If that sentiment is shared a lot among Sony's direction, I can see why someone would become very reluctant in seeing a foreigner in charge. But as always, these are all speculations, and we almost never see the "true" story. On another note, Stringer also said that he gave up on learning japanese because when you're a big businessman, English is what really matters. This way of thinking, while being in a japanese corporation, is very deplorable.
Let's just say that everybody is wrong! A foreigner can do a very good job, but he must be chosen for the right reason. And Stringer might not be the best choice.
