I *NEVER* once thought any of it was believable police tactics, it all panned out just like any James Bond videogame.
(Well the first 3 levels were all I could bear)
Oh because James Bond rolled with a team of highly equipped SWAT officers all the time, right? Are we even talking about the same game?

I have read some parts of the thread (although I haven't gone through all six pages, which is fair enough).

What exactly did you not agree with in what I wrote?

Nothing. You just missed the point I was making.

They were just random ideas I plucked out of the air while making the post to illustrate that coming up with an alternative to WW2/space marines would not tax the average brain, I never intended for people to focus on them too much. How about you are a mutant animal in a research centre who escapes into the big city and goes on the run while being hunted by security forces? How about you are an alien who gets left behind on earth (circa 1950s Roswell style) and has to duck and dive from the CIA long enough to get rescued? Why not make The Terminator as an FPS? Play it as The Terminator and have to hunt down and kill someone, fighting police etc as you go like in the film?

If I ever want to play a decent game where I pick up a gun and kill something, I am more or less forced to do it during WW2 or as an unstoppable space marine. There doesn't seem to be a good reason for this beyond game producers absolute terror of trying something new.
Once again, they were random ideas, not serious proposals for games. My proposal is that game developers try something new from time to time.

Ok, we have the grizzled space marine with a gun that looks like a piece of construction equipment or the WW2 tough guy with a chin you could crack anvils on.

Anyone else?

Why in the name of Michael Bay are there no other genres of FPS games? I am loathe to speak for anyone except myself but am I really the only one who is getting a bit fed up with this? It's not even as if it would be difficult to come up with some alternatives... here:-

Napoleonic wars (a la Sharpe), with muskets and flintlocks.

WW1, up over the trench with 30 buddies, all trying to get to the machine gun nest without getting perforated by enemy bullets.

Pirates, specifically the boarding parts. Running around Friggates and stuff with those awful little pistol things, complete with explodable environments from all the cannon fire.

Being in a SWAT team, having to raid random buildings in a city to rescue hostages and stuff. Even driving your SWAT van there and ordering your squad about. (kinda like GTA but with an FPS SWAT motif).

If they had a go at any of these I guarantee they would generate more interest (and sales) than Medal of Honor:1032 or Call of Duty 17. Is there a valid reason game developers haven't tried something new?
Its simple most FPS's have a large budget that means it has to make a profit and that means they are built "SAFE" like BS,FO3,ect,ect or *cough*Halo3*cough* all under deved and highly "safe" tittles.... or like the Transformers or DOOM movies safe simple teen flicks that might be misconstrued for something from your child hood.

Bland designs are safe and safe = profit.

For 1: I've been dreaming of a decent Pirate Game FOR YEARS. But it can't be an FPS, there need to be swords, otherwise you deprive Pirates of something like half their badassery.

For 2: Here's a few:
- A dystopian future (think Rapture but outside and with little sister/big daddies) where people modify their bodies via Technology. (make interesting mods and make guns fully customizable. As in- Let Us Build Our Guns From Scratch using gear we find)
That's a guaranteed success if a good story line is thrown in.

- K I know americans are still all sensitive about having lost the vietnam war, but common... can you honestly tell me the idea of guerilla warfare in a jungle never struck nobody's fancy? Just give it good stealth mechanics, Sniper Rifles and huge Rambo knives. BANG! Instant success.

- Now, I know that cowboy games are going to come out (Call Of Juanez or whatever it's called) but this is more of a suggested mechanic. Does anyone remember those old westerns where the guy would come to a standoff with another and both would stare each other down until a bullet was fired and that was it. I suggest that be included with a mechanic that could be, the longer you stared him down, the more accurate your crosshair becomes, the same for him, so both wait until their shot is aimed at exactly what they want and shoot. (It would make for both suspense and awesome strategy. Just put in limb damage for this one because that'd make the experience even better)

hows about a pokemon themed FPS (actually 3PS would porbably be beter). Imagine it, every move having the effect of a different weapon. You wander as a trainer, throw your ball. Then engage in aa Shooting style battle, using cover, terrain and switching to the trainer to use items. Would revulutionise the Fps Genre andd the pokemon franchise.
(hows about Pokemon Snap? eh, that was a brilliant twist on the rail shooter)

an Fps Wizard game on the wi! cast different spells using gestures.

a game in which you play a nanotechnology medical robot, moving through the human body, using a variety of anti bodies to defeat malicious cells. At the same time you must run of the bodies natural resources without upsetting your host.

a game where you play the only orignal game developer, metaphorically battling an army of maintream developers (all clad in power armour and armed with to the teeth with rockets, grenades and assualt rifles) you defeat them by searching through the minds of employees for orginal ideas withs which you battle said clones

For me, a good FPS is one which has amazing/varied weapons, levels and enemies.

Everything else is a bonus. Just want to shoot a few things and move on.

A great FPS happens when all of the above is combined into a good story and progression.

Painkiller is a good game. It does most things better than any FPS I have played.

Half Life is a great game. It does everything better than any FPS.

In my Opinion of course.

I want to play a noir fps where there is no shooting involved. All your actions are done with a pen--making up and then checking off items on a to-do list, scribbling notes on a photo, maddeningly trying to get a number written on your hand while being shot at. I think it would present an interesting design challenge to use the first-person format as a means of immersing the player in that frenzied, paranoid mindset, rather than the 'I am being shot at -- I should shoot back -- god the screen is shaking slightly this is so intense and gritty and realistic' we've all grown so jaded to.

Rainbow 6. except for the driving bit. that and rainbow 6 is more linear. but the games before vegas and vegas 2 were very tactical. you had to plan out the paths that you team would take and what kinda tactics you would use. it rocked

I think the main problem with FPS games are the uncreative weapons. I never liked thos FPS's trying to outclass each other in being realistic. They are all SO alike somehow. I like some of insomniacs FPS. Resistance 1 and 2 was the first FPS game i really enjoyed, due to the changing weapons (Bullseye (tag on an opponent and i will hit most times), Auger (Shoot through walls) Fareye (slowmotion sniper))

There HAS been a FPS game set during the American Civil war. Yep, nothing like firing once and reloading for 20 seconds, or charging into musket fire (and dying over and over because you're the unlucky guy who gets shot) with your sabre drawn.

The problem here is twofold: 1) much of the time when people try something new it turns out that it sucks and no one buys it and 2) people have proven that they WILL buy generic FPS #90001 so long as it demonstrates a measurable improvement in graphical quality over FPS #90000.
Hence why i don't play FPSs because you play 1, you've played them all
I like ever changing games hence the Command and conquer terror drone of an avatar

There are varieties of Fps's Just most of them are in another genre, you coud call games like fallout, bioshock, Hlaf-life, and even oblivion Fpses. Stop bitching and just play the game, if its a good fps you shouldnt give a shit if the "hero" is a space marine. Its alot more likely for a marine to be holding a gun than anything else. Enjoy the game, if you want variety play something other than an fps, play a puzzle game, a platforming game, stop bitching and just enjoy.
Why don't you stop bitching that we're speaking our minds and want something better rather then the safe game that meets your low standerds

I'm still trying to understand whats wrong with a game if its not completely original, but still FUN to play? If enjoy the genre than any good game in it should be a good game to you. If the game HAS TO be mostly original, how could you enjoy anything?

The reason the wheel hasn't been reinvented in forever is because it works the BEST. Convincing people to drive on square wheels doesn't making driving any better.
This is different than the wheel. The wheel has not been reinvented, but the car that rests upon it has. Many thousands of times. If they were still making nothing but the Ford T people would be pretty sick of it by now.

Each time a new WW2 shooter comes out it is slightly less fun that the game actually merits, because everything about the game is just so damn familiar. It doesn't have to be original every time. Just try something different from time to time.

I think it's the simple reason that games like that sell really well while games not like that do not.

Okay asshole I didnt say that you shouldn't speak your mind, you should enjoy the games you buy. Dont expect all games to be revolutionary. Sometimes in a game is okay to be average. Just because Halo isnt the most original game, dosnt mean it isnt fun. This is a forum, im not trying to change your opinions, im just speaking my mind. I'd apreciate if you would shut the fuck up.

I know people already brought it up, but I can't say enough good things about these 2 games. You really need to check out this story about playing it. I can only hope they'll make a sequel and make it even better, combining the elements of SWAT 3 and 4.

SWAT 3 and 4 are awesome games (though I prefer the gameplay of SWAT 3, SWAT 4 looks so much better). I love the tactical aspects where your goal is to try and neutralize and handcuff the suspects, if possible. SWAT 4 felt more restrictive to me, and more like a shooter since the suspects didn't seem to give up as easy when confronted with SWAT.

One of my favorite levels in SWAT 3 is about a guy suspecting of firing a rifle from his house at cars on the freeway nearby. The SWAT team is called in and surrounds the house. SWAT 3 had so many different outcomes, and a variety of things could happen on this level alone:

1) The guy is inside the house, possibly on the lower level - he might be armed with a handgun, or he might have the rifle, or he might just be unarmed. He might run away, or he might be compliant and put his hands up - there was a button just for yelling "POLICE! HANDS UP! DROP THE WEAPON!" etc...

2) His girlfriend might be in the house. She was usually passive compliant, but I think at times if her boyfriend dropped the weapon she might go for it.

3) The dude might be up in the attic with the rifle - and if he wasn't, the rifle would be laying on a box up there and you go up to confiscate it as evidence.

4) Once, I didn't find the guy. I searched all the main rooms, had found his girlfriend and got her out of the house. I opened the door to the bedroom and while checking the entryway yelled "Son of a..." - the dude was UNDER his bed! In so many playthroughs I had never seen him do this before. I put my cursor over him and used the 'issue compliance' command, and started yelling at him. He slid out from under the bed, but then he started bringing a pistol up so I had to take him down with force.

Every level had randomness to it like that. SWAT 4... I don't know - something just didn't feel right about it - but you would probably enjoy the way it stands out from the traditional FPS. If you don't mind the older graphics, pick up a copy of SWAT 3 if you can.
