I am in the Medal of Honor beta on the PS3 and today they sent out a survey basically asking your opinion of the game and how it rates. I started to think about how I would change the whole genre and there has to be new ideas out there.. all these new games coming out are the same old thing.

I think making deaths more important is one thing. I dont like insta repawns, so maybe adding a timer to each death you have starting with 10 secs to a max of 30 or 40 second wait after you die. I know some games have respawn timers or perma death.. but on siege maps spawning a few feet from where you just died (by spawning from a teammate) really cheapens the whole thing.

Maybe making objectives that have to be complete to allow respawns?

Anyone else have any ideas?

Make an FPS that's wacky as all hell. Bright colors, over the top violence, and things of that sort.

Edit: Like Bioshock, but, injected with some Nintendo mania.

TF2 anyone? Nutjob characters, crazy weapons, SAXTON HALE. Methinks this be what you need.

gaaaaahh!!! respawn times are the bane of good gameplay. I prefer fps games that go the opposite direction like UT and Quake. I don't think the fps genre needs more innovation. The last time that happened, we got "realism" sims. Just keep making games like UT (bulletstorm is looking great and Warsow (check it out if you don't know it) is fucking insane) and i'll be happy.

I third the idea for a cartoony, vibrant FPS. I'm sick of gritty, which is saying something since I was in full support of it a few years ago.

I'm picturing Kameo-style graphics with TimeSplitters inspired gameplay and characters. + ability to jump.

Team-based perks/killstreaks (i.e. a UAV every 5 kills, automatically activated)

A game-mode in which each team has a number of tickets (say 20-30) that, when reduced to 0, open up a section of the map farther backwards of the losing team's spawn. The team that gets pushed back 2 or three times loses.

What we really need is games with better stories. That's why I liked Resistance, and to an extent Bioshock, because they didn't have the whole "Let's just go kill some dudes" storyline. there was actual depth behind it.

You do that, and make a fitting environment, and there isn't all that much need for change. There just needs to be a fitting atmosphere and motivation for your actions.

Take away all pretence of realism and set it somewhere bonkers, with bonkers characters, weapons and locations. Just make it bonkers.

You mean like Borderlands? Or Conkers Bad Fur Day MP? Take a page from today's ENN and make a 2nd person shooter. Since we have already had the FP RPG and platformer. A FP sports game might be interesting.

You might be interested in Singularity. As far as stories go it's ok so far (I am not finished yet) but the atmosphere is spot on.

-Looks to Halo Reach-

Well, that is just my personal opinion. Buckets full of customisation is how you fix it.

You should check out Penumbra. Very interesting adventure/horror/survival game. Also, I really enjoy Mirror's Edge mechanics. It's not so much about shooting but it's so awesome to smoothly make crazy runs and jumps and wall runs and slides etc.
Also, more story telling elements like BioShock and Metro 2033

I, for one, think the time is ripe for text-based real-time first person shooters.

Alternatively, TF2 remains really fun and far detached from any sort of gritty realism. I'll go play that.

More games like Quake [1-3] and Half-life (all of em)

-Realism is bad (trying to escape reality here not simulate it)
-Must have your own personal arsenal (none of this 2 gun nonsense)
-Must be able to strafe jump (everything is better at 100 km/h)
-Must not have moral choice systems (it just gets in the way of shooting things)
-Must not have RPG elements (again in the way of shooing things)
-Must not have regenerating health (avoid "spending half the the game hiding under a table waiting for your legs to grow back")

Sorry I can't really think of anything new at the moment, but these things worked well in the past.

Well Frontlines did something like that, except it was capture 2 points to push them back, that game was great, too bad it died out.

Took the words right out of my mouth.
