I don't think the FPS genre is stale as a whole. I just think CoD and MoH are, hell I don't think they've been interesting for a while and I found Airborne almost offensive. Actually, I popped my head up at CoD:MW1, but didn't care enough to buy or play.

I think Bulletstorm and Rage are going in the right direction.

I don't mind gritty or realism (in graphics style), but to many games try to stick close real war settings, which is pretty dull. That is why I liked Resistance 1.

How about a first person game where you play as a construction worker working on an ancient site guarded a god, who sends down a giant spider to kill you and you must defeat it with a nail gun? Then you hire yourself to rid the world of the gods so you travel to other mythical construction sites and destroy the giant bug that god sends at you?

You heard it here first.

OT: I would like an FPS that doesn't involve a rescue mission. I hate the things. That's why I like Serious Sam. Here's the plot: Kill everything that twitches.

I wouldn't change the gameplay as much as I would make the narrative much more original and compelling.

Hah.. Hexen was awesome, Id like to see that again

of course a Duke Nuke'em.. but those are rehashes and will probably not be ground breaking in any direction.

I think there are maybe 4-5 known FPS MMOs coming out in the next year.. think 2-3 already failed (Tabula Rasa is only one i can remember) and Planetside had its niche market for years now but I think MMO is the next direction devs are going and its not a good direction IMO.

Bulletstorm looks sick

I am in the Medal of Honor beta on the PS3 and today they sent out a survey basically asking your opinion of the game and how it rates. I started to think about how I would change the whole genre and there has to be new ideas out there.. all these new games coming out are the same old thing.

I think making deaths more important is one thing. I dont like insta repawns, so maybe adding a timer to each death you have starting with 10 secs to a max of 30 or 40 second wait after you die. I know some games have respawn timers or perma death.. but on siege maps spawning a few feet from where you just died (by spawning from a teammate) really cheapens the whole thing.

Maybe making objectives that have to be complete to allow respawns?

Anyone else have any ideas?
it's all about controversy, WW2 games where you play as the Germans in Europe, Afganistan where you play as taliban, black slave escaping a plantation etc..

I'd remove Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2, since they've done the exact opposite of DOOM, Bioshock or Halo: Change anything. They made a craptacular FPS which is only appealing to kids with ADHD.

Aside from that, I'd force every FPS game to absolutely, categorically test their multiplayer as hard as possible, shoot anyone who suggests saving some already finished maps for post launch DLC, and get someone to code a video playback/screenshot mode akin to Halo/Forza 3.

Make an FPS that's wacky as all hell. Bright colors, over the top violence, and things of that sort.

Edit: Like Bioshock, but, injected with some Nintendo mania.
Do you play any freeware deathmatch games, like Nexuiz, World of Padman or Sauerbraten? Those three fit your criteria.
