Make it so Halo never exsisted

- DasBoSchitt
(I agree with him)

I set out to find out why the Halo fans liked this game so much. They've only been able to provide me with one single answer: It took no thought or skill to play. Yes, basically, the Halo fans are saying even the kids who held lit M80 fireworks in their hands could still play this game as long as they could still access the "throw grenade" button. Multiplayer is insufferable because thanks to this game reaching out to the idiots. A good example of why I think Halo is so patronizingly easy would be that I've seen these "Halo masters" pick up Half-Life 2 for the first time, and they'd get angry and stop playing because their dumb asses died a lot at the hands of common sense.

I wouldn't have minded Halo and it's shitty game mechanics if it were easy to not play and just ignore. Unfortunately, it had to go on to stomp the shit out of the entire shooter genre. Many have said Halo "revolutionized" the genre, but reducing the inventory to a selection of one boring rifle and one boring pistol in most cases seems kind of a step backward from fun and the health system just made it stupidly easy for the player to get through the game as long as they keep hiding for a few seconds.

And theres A LOT more

I think Modern Warfare 2 had one great innovation: Instead of shooting bullets, guns shoot small vials of flesh-eating jam exploding on your face.

Seriously: Jam Warfare. All weapons are replaced by different forms of jam in a world where everyone is pancakes. Playing some really pshychedelic techno music in the background and having a colourful world of jelly around would instantly make this game a classic. Also, the spawn system would work.

You mean like Borderlands? Or Conkers Bad Fur Day MP? Take a page from today's ENN and make a 2nd person shooter. Since we have already had the FP RPG and platformer. A FP sports game might be interesting.
They tried that on NFL 2K5. It didn't turn out so well.

OT: Like many have said, just make a crazy, over-the-top action FPS. Use games like TimeSplitters and XIII (the visual style) as a reference.

Other than less gritty realism, brown color palettes, and poorly written, shallow story lines I'd like to see some more futuristic (non-Halo) shooters, possibly based off of some of the 'Space Marine' novels (Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein or the Legacy and Inheritance Trilogies by Ian Douglas for example).
I'd love to see power armored soldiers armed with lasers, flamers and other magnetic accelerator weapons stomping, or flying, around alien planets while vaporizing/exploding/frying enemies.
Finally I'd like to see the ability to remove limbs while the target is still alive, like being able to blow off someones legs and watch them crawling away before dying.

I freakin loved Mirrors Edge which was really a first person platformer with very little shooting in fact most of the time it's better to escape than to try to kill anyone so I'd love some more outside the box thinking like that maybe other types of game that you could play in first person or just some news on a sequel

So.... everyone wants TF2? That's what I've pulled away from this.
- a pixar-like graphic style
- balanced
- lots of weapons, all of them wacky and fun
- absurd amounts of backstory and fun to be had if you read the blogs and such (for an FPS)
- great characters
- really damn brilliant.

How about not making a FPS based around a historical war, such as... WW2. Hasn't that been done to death? "Ooooo we'll make it interesting by putting in ZOMBIES! Nobody has fought zombies with WW2-era weapons before!"
I'm not so sure I'm a fan of FPS games having leveling abilities as well, like increased speed or more ammo. Why not make it so the guns are more accurate? Or make it so it doesn't take fifteen to twenty seconds to reload a damn shotgun?
The more they stress for realism in these games, the less inclined I am to want to play them. If I wanted a realistic experience, I could have joined the military for that. I don't want games that make it feel like a mirror image of what it is like to shoot terrorists... except when playing online when the terrorists jump around like morons and spray-n-pray while shooting rocket launchers and grenade launchers in a hallway.

here is a idea, how about this

a little story based but could be intresting to do

you are a vimpire.. (done i know) but you start in the Stone age. you are woken in times during history to defend man from the other Vimpires..

so like you start with the cave men.. then stone age bronze age.. iron age, and so on as a pretector of man, you sleep bettween the ages, and gose all the way to moden day

just a little idea.. ( i have hundreds)

like one day you have a bow next a cross bow..

and vimpier power hmmm lots a way you can go with this..

This is seriously THE most strange game idea I've ever heard. And I enjoy it to its fullest! Now,make the bad guys waffles with hilarious accents and we have a clear "game of the year".

I completely agree with this idea. Every bit of it.
Also, Jefferson Airplane. No trip out sequence of any sort is complete without White Rabbit.

Updated Hexen.

That's all we need.
I was just thinking about this last night. This was one of the first FPS games I ever played, and one of the only ones I'll actually vouch for.

Well could always try Hockey or Baseball. I doubt they would fare much better but you never know. At least it would be something new and innovative.

Base the game more around avoiding being shot than having regen health?
One bullet, you're really injured, 2 or 3, you're fucked.

Basing it more around realistic tactics, physics and etc would be nice, too.
Like me hiding in my command centre and coordinating my team against an enemy team via cameras, getting my team setting up explosives and me telling them to get into ambush position whilst I sit there, nervously scanning the cameras, hoping to catch someone in time to detonate a claymore on their asses.

Could be a lot of fun.

If a game is trying to be realistic it needs to make areal effort to be realistic, not just to look like it is. Marine Mike's posts [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.204846-Marine-Mike-Presents-Games-and-Ammo-M18-Claymore] really cover many of the things that devs like Infinity Ward don't think about when making a "realistic" game. I am not the kind of person who thinks that games need to be like reality, that defeats the purpose. Though I don't like all the jackasses thinking that they even have an inkling of an idea of what combat is like. I would also like some variety to many games are doing the same old stuff.
