medium - one thing through which another passes. an agency of accomplishment.DVSAurion said:I wouldn't call them media (plural for medium), since a FPS cannot be compared to a newspaper.David Bray said:It's a term to know what you're getting into. It involves shooting, therefore it is a shooter. The rest of the things attributed to it, like prefixes, are additional.
Hori and vert SHMUPs - Medium, not genre.
Gun Shooting - Medium and action, not genre.
Rail Shooter - Medium, not genre.
Run n Gun - Method/tactic, not genre.
Topdown Shooter - Medium, not genre.
FPS - Medium, not genre.
TPS - Medium, not genre.
Now games are a medium. Horror, action and adventure are genres. WTF is between them? I sure don't know, but I wouldn't call them media.

Pretentious =/= IntellectualHalo Fanboy said:FPS is a subgenre of shooter. Calling a shooter is being unspecific.Understanding the semantics of any area of expertise is the first step to actually understanding anything. The thing is that games tend to have two genres. One for the narrative and one for gameplay. Which is, by the way, what these "durr durr ff is not rpg" people fail to grasp.DVSAurion said:I wouldn't call them media (plural for medium), since a FPS cannot be compared to a newspaper.David Bray said:It's a term to know what you're getting into. But don't you understand? Halo invented proper grammar.Asuka Soryu said:Are we really discussing this? ~.~ This is as stupid as demanding people on the internet use proper grammar. You can't make someone do what you want, just because it's 'incorect'.
XDTriggerHappyAngel said:So "FPS" belongs to the category "Shooter", but you can't call it a Shooter?
That means that a Pistol is a Gun, but you can't call it a Gun
OP, your logic isn't logical![]()
Yeah Doom is the best game in the game in the game genre. Even saying Doom is "a great shooter" is a retarded statement. Doom is great compared to what, Pink Sweets?Xhu said:As an example, Doom is [in order of increasing specificity]:
A game.
A videogame.
A shooter.
A first person shooter.
All correct to use. It just depends on how specific you wish to be. Pretty silly thing to get riled over.
You may have caught me here, so thanks. Here's an addendum to my previous statements; calling exclusively FPSs shooter is the real problem. Here's a quote that demonstrates this.TriggerHappyAngel said:So "FPS" belongs to the category "Shooter", but you can't call it a Shooter?

...Sexy Devil said:A 360 owner who doesn't like shooters would probably be better off buying a brick, they'd get more use out of it.Steppin Razor said:It's not really that odd. The latest sales figures that I've been able to dig up indicate the PS3 has only sold about 3 million units less than the 360, and those are figures that have the 30th of June for PS3 numbers and the 23rd of July for the 360 numbers.
As for what I think of it... Eh, there might just be more PS3 owners in your area than there are 360 owners. Either that or the 360 owners in your area aren't interested in shooters as much.
Those games are not FPSs. If the primary mechanic isn't shooting then it isn't an FPS.Netrigan said:The FPS genre ended up including games like Thief which
is primarily a stealth mechanic and Mirror's Edge which has a parkour mechanic. Both have some shooting but not enough to be classified as shooters. I don't have a problem with the redundancy if only to avoid some fucktard trying invalid a point I made by tossing out one of those games.
For casual use maybe? If we want to commentate on or criticize anything then with any discipline then we need use the right language. Even paid journalist say this trash.Snipermanic said:Words can have different meanings or imply different things according to context. Welcome to language.
Good idea. I was actually thinking about that when I made this topic. Of all the genres those are the only mechanically similar ones.More Fun To Compute said:I get you, message received loud and clear guvnor. I still need a handy single term to refer to both FPS and third person shooters though so from now on I will call them man baby toy soldier games or MBTSG to avoid confusion.
I seriously cannot fathom how you can think we don't need to sort Time Crisis and Contra into different genres. Quit talking about games if you can't understand something so obvious.Substance-E said:unnecessary distinctions...
I would be one of them, except I tend to think of Contra, instead. Seriously, this is a case of the kids who grew up after the end of 2D gaming appropriating a term that meant something else when those of us above about 18 were little. I understand what is generally meant by shooter today, but when I was a kid, there was no such thing as a "Shmup" -- those games were all called "Shooters," and they were the only ones with that exact appellation. Then again, FPS's were called "Doom clones," rail shooters involving light guns were called "light gun games," and rail shooters along the lines of StarFox, if they weren't just called shooters, were called "on rails shooters," or some variation of the term.Onyx Oblivion said:The thing is, most people understand what is implied by "shooter".
When I say shooter, only five people on this site think of Ikaruga.

Yes i do understand these meanings and you're being very rude simply because your thread did not go your way.Halo Fanboy said:You have no clue what Gun Shooting is (holding a gun-like controller) or Run n Gun (sidescroll shooter with your feet on the ground.)
