In response to the people who think that no series should be killed as long as some people are having fun with it, I say some series needs to die so that the people that play them can be exposed to other games, for their own good. For example, Call of Duty needs to die so that casuals can realize that there are other, much better games on the market that offer the same experience.

Also there is this thing called "economic competition", which no one seems to grasp. If crappy games like Call of Duty keep making the rediculous amounts of money that they are, eventually the good game studios will either go out of business because they can't really compete, or sell out because they want rake in some cash from the more simple-minded gamers.

I don't think any franchise should die if it actually offers a different universe. Final Fantasy manages to keep my attention more than Zelda because the gameplay is different in quite a few manners.

I wish a quick death on the Zelda series because it's really a horrible, incredibly stale series in my opinion, but this is considering that no one would remember the series. I mean, at least Mario offered their fair share of gameplay innovation from game to game. Call of Duty also needs to change pretty quickly. I don't hate Black Ops but the fact that everyone can die in a few bullets encourages camping, and I hate the idea of killstreaks as well.

The Simpsons, seriously they're just embarrassing themselves now.
Oh god yes. The jokes arnt as good as they were. But what's really bad is the episodes are forgettable. I can barely remember any episodes after season 12 or 13 or whenever it went bad. It's all guest stars now. It needs to end. I can live the rest of my life on season 6-13 and be happy.

I think Princess Peach should finally put out so the whole Mario thing can be put to bed.

COD doesn't need to necessarily die, I just think it needs a massive over-haul.
Like, a COD 4 level over-haul if the series wants to stay "fun."
Otherwise, it's going to go down the Tony Hawk path...

None if you like then play it but the people crying for the end of any franchise do deserve a savage beating.
^Seconded.

You know, people still enjoy the series, so it shouldnt be killed just cause some individual thinks so.

Now, I would like to REINVENT some franchises. Sports series should run on a buy it once, then get online updates you pay for. Like... seven dollars for new updates every five weeks for (American) football. Or maybe a four/five dollar charge every month for NHL games when the season starts new. All of this on top of a flat rate kinda fee. Like... 15-20 dollars. You can still play it, but if you odnt want to be outclassed, then you upgrade. If you're fine with it, you odnt.

I dont know. I dont htink you should really kill anything, since gaming is a business. I know, its surprising, game developers arent doing htis out of the goodness of their hearts. BUt really, if it makes money, its going to go through. And who are you (we) to deny people of that pleasure?

Dynasty Warriors.

If we are to expand gaming into a more artistic medium, we need to encourage friends to play good games and never let them within sights of a bad franchise. A bad franchise like Dynasty Warriors.

Mario.
Not so much the games, as they're well done. Just him.
I don't get it. Why do people care about him?
He holds on to that thin cord we call nostalgia and I doubt he'll ever let go.

I wouldn't mind seeing a stop to the over saturation of sports games. I'd rather see them release a game once every two years (or longer) and just update rosters and whatnot through DLC or patches. It's just silly to have them come out so often.

Both of these are pipe dreams of course. Mario will never die, because everyone likes him (except for me). And why would anyone stop milking the sports cash cows?

spyro just let it die is it a good idea to pick some thing up after the creators drop it? no it should of been left to die when insomniac dropped it to make ratchet and clank at its its nothing but a rotting maggot covered corpse

those NFL games QUIT MAKING THEM! have you seen how many of them clog the sale bin?!

Halo because you darn well know if we don't stop it now it will become a similar mess as spyro

also I would like to respectfully disagree with those of you saying they should end pokemon because black & white look awesome to me

I'm gonna have to go with Metal Gear Solid.

Hideo Kojima should just shut the fuck up.
I cant agree with this as i feel it has ended with Guns of the Patriots. From what ive seen there is nothing about the upcoming Rising that fans liked about the previous MGS games. There was enough complaints when they made Raiden the main character of Sons of Liberty.

I dont think any franchise should die unless there is absolutely no one who will continue playing the games. But i do find those sports games that are brought out every year with only very small changes kind of pointless.

Pokemon; I've loved it since Red/Blue, but they should've stopped after Ruby/Saphire
It probably would have more of a lifespan if each generation wasn't the same game every few years.

"Oh boy, starters for Black and White! I wonder if there's a new type triangle- Nope, same exact game.

I actually agree with this. If I were put in the position to kill any of these franchises, I would most likely not do it. Every one mentioned so far has their fans, and to each their own.

However, I still think that it's a very slim chance that Call of Duty or Halo can go anywhere good. Halo has a slightly better shot, since as people have pointed out here 343 Industries is comprised of many former Bungie employees, and there's many places it can still go from here.

As for some the others that people have brought up:

Any Sports Games: They have their fans, and they will keep buying the yearly installments as long as they keep all the stats and rosters current.
MGS: They tied up every loose end possible in #4, and there have been plenty of prequels and spinoffs already. Success of future installments unlikely, except amongst diehard fans.
Final Fantasy: As long as there's Gil, maybe Chocobos, and possibly Moogles, the series can pretty much do whatever it wants. Unfortunately, Square isn't quite utilizing the series' full potential, instead taking more-than-heavy cues from #7 in each installment.
Sonic: If they seriously restructure or downright ax Sonic Team, there's a shot. A slim one.

As for Mario and Zelda, these games have no established series continuity to worry about, so they can pretty much do whatever they want. Again, though, like the problem with Final Fantasy, Nintendo would rather emulate past successes with these series' rather than exercise their full potential. A lot of franchises like this have heaps of potential clamped down by the perceived need for fan service.

God of War has run its course. While it might be kinda fun to go around murdering other pantheons, it wouldn't be the same. GoW3 wasn't as enjoyable as GoW2 IMO, I just felt I was running around (or falling around) in circles, which did annoy me a little. If the Santa Monica studios are looking for something new, might I suggest the unlockable plot point about Kratos' brother form the first GoW?

Call of Duty needs to go away for a while or become something completely different (which would annoy the fanboys to no end). The core gameplay of WaW, MW2 and BO hasn't changed much since CoD4 (I haven't played earlier ones online to compare those ones) and IMO has gotten stale.

Final Fantasy needs to stop. The "games" are just laughable at this point.
