That's not like it's ever been a new idea, back when the PSOne and 64 were going head to head I had a PSOne and was the mockery at my lunch table for "only having 32 bits". (Despite a sum of PS games looking better than 64 games because of capacity but this is middle school for me so dem bits)

Is it a dumbshit mentality? Yes because games like Disgaea 3 which are head and shoulders above it's recent competition are overlooked. I thought the spites looked great, had their own charm to them like SNK titles. But no ugly and pixelated ung!

While I'm on the topic of turn based RPGs, let me bring up Final Fantasy Tactics because I can. It's from 97/98 and it's still hailed far above all the new 'competing' titles out there that have better graphics.

Popular stuff is popular for a reason. These "Frat boys" allow the publishers to get funded, and they pay developers to make more games. I swear, too many assume lesser known games are godly next to the latest CoD game.

Some are just getting into our medium. Big Budget AAA titles allow them to step in further as interesting things will catch their attention.

but all they do is make the same game over and over again. i like diffrent. i dont want my choices to only be "military shooter" "beta of a fighter that will be rereleased in months"

It's just different things people like and what's popular at the time. if you like it who cares what the "frat boys" like? People will still make the games you like regardless. Nothing else, some people will always buck the status quo and make "less popular" game types.

I agree, there is a tendency to cater to the "hardcore" market. Most game are "gritty" and "real" instead of being imaginative like the older games. There is nothing gritty or real about Legend of Zelda, yet it manages to rank among the top games anyway. I wish people would put more imagination into their games, more color, and someone other than a white buff male with five o'clock shadow as the protagonist.

Since I was in a frat and I love most of the games hipsters love to hate, I'd argue that it's people like me who advance gaming and people like the OP who are trying hard to keep it from ever evolving into something better.

ive never played fighting games online. at least not after one time i tried and there was too much lag i got curbstomped. besides i prefer aksys fighters, but i guess that makes me a bad person

Eh, pretty much nobody knows what Ace Combat is, it seems, at least, not AC04, 5, or Zero, and they're fantastic games imo, with good reviews, fun gameplay, and fine stories (AC04 for instance actually made me tear up a bit, and had a lot of tension). I don't mind that there aren't tons of people in on my little gaming secret, but I agree that frat boy games are a problem.

Unfortunately, the irony is that the best part of frat boy games?SPLIT-SCREEN MULTIPLAYER?seems to be an exotic animal to many devs these days. Boo.

In the case of graphics, I'm with the OP. I don't need photo realistic graphics in order to be able to enjoy a game. Deus Ex: HR is a decent example, the graphics were nothing special but the overall visual aesthetic was interesting. As the Extra Credits crew said, graphics are the tool to create an interesting aesthetic. If you use your tools right, you can make something good out with them no matter how outdated they are.

I will admit though that BF3 with the Frostbite 2 engine is the single prettiest game I've ever seen.

Let me simplify, actually. It depends on the game. For JRPGs like the OP likes, graphics are far less important than those traditional JRPG elements(love em or hate em). For a game like BF3, the graphics might be a necessary advancement for a more visceral experience.

I would agree to a change in the diversity of games, and a main character with more personality that his cardboard cut-out.

However, even though the game itself didn't live up to expectations, Duke Nukem (2011) definitely is the best example of a parody of generic protagonists (Which unfortunately includes his older versions.)

How can you enjoy BlazBlue when it's so blatantly unbalance. I'll give you that Guilty Gear may be astoundingly balanced, but because it is such an old game with such a steep learning curve nobody but the old champions plays it competitively.

Edit: I am looking forward to the P4 Fighter, however.
