Well honestly I don't watch much Youtube, and don't keep up with who the celebrities are. However for every success out there, there are plenty of people who just don't get it.
For example, I'm a big fan of Yahtzee's despite a very differant taste in games apparently. Arguably he's why I started calling "The Escapist". Highly acidic, slice and dice reviewers are not new. He also doesn't appear to be using anything impressive except some fairly simple artwork and a home moviemaker program, combined with a headset mic.
Yet what makes Yahtzee better than all the other guys out there that have been doing the same thing for years? Even back in the days of "Evil Scorpia" and "The Condor" you had a couple of successes and a ton of failures, and really couldn't put your finger on why one succeeded where another failed, seniority (who does it first) doesn't seem to matter.
I guess it's a matter of charisma (and charisma comes in all flavors). No one is universally liked, but I guess guys like Yahtzee and Fred entertain the majority of people and give off a vibe that their persumed rivals do not.
People have been asking the same thing about webcomics for a long time also. Yahtzee even did a "show" on that. What makes Penny Arcade such a huge success and other sites such abysmal failures? To a fan I guess they will say because they like Penny Arcade. To someone who just doesn't like it, they will never get it I guess. The trick is to coincide with exactly what amuses the public at the right time, and it's a matter of luck as much as anything.
Also personal attacks and raids do not strike me as being the purpose of The Escapist. You *MIGHT* have more luck on something like 4Chan (or affiliated boards). Though the results of even TRYING something like that there can be very bad if it doesn't work.
