I don't really feel much about the WBC to really say that I hate or feel anything for them.
It annoyed me, I will admit that.
Being gay, I found their anti-tolerance statements to be rather offensive and hurtful, but that is their objective.
To be hated is better than to suffer indifference. Hatred still means that you are going to be remembered after death. Indifference means that no one would truly remember you when you're gone.

By being hated, they have succeeded in being remembered, and that their name will be spread.
That is the biggest thing to remember, I will not hate them, because it will mean that they will never be forgotten for their hateful crimes.
They have shown that they feel no remorse for their actions, and feel no sympathy towards the ones they harm.

I won't feel any joy in his passing, he's just a man in the end.
I've never met him, he has never impacted my life for worse or better, and his death will mean nothing to me.

Fantastic, that's my thoughts on the matter. I would even support a hateful picketing of his funeral. If you spread pain and mental anguish to others in one of the hardest times of their lives and recieve no meaningful backlash in return, then what message are we sending to these stupid people? I'm one of those people who usually tries to be the bigger man and the better person, but in this case that bastard truly deserves it.

Mind you, this is my kneejerk emotional reaction to this news after years of hearing about the things they have done, so take what I say here with a grain of salt. In a couple of hours I will probably feel differently.

He's a professional troll that's done more to hurt Christianity than help it.

I'd bet he's 'converted' more people to atheism, than to Xtanity.

You know this might sound awful... but I hope its a stroke.
There have been known cases where a stroke induced something like a religious experience in the sufferer.
Maybe he could turn over a new leaf.

I feel like I'm supposed to hate him for all his hatemongering... but I just don't care. His movement has just turned into a farce where the counter-protests just got more and more hilarious and wacky. He probably turned more people toward tolerance than hatred with his bullshit anyhow. I don't care how he dies, I just want that group to wither and die off.

But you know what I would enjoy... a massive protest at his funeral. It would be nice to see how his hateful family reacts when a group of assholes picket a loved one's funeral. I wonder how they would feel about free speech then?

Meh, I hate his family more than him anyway. He would've just been a crazy old man, but people had to believe him for there to be any lasting effects.

From a rational standpoint I have no use for vengeance or punishment, at least for it's own sake, and I wouldn't wish death on anyone.

That being said I certainly won't be shedding any tears for this clown. It's a sad fact that this thread is titled "Fred Phelps is near death" and not "leader of radical hate group is near death".

I can see you all thinking: "lets protest at their funeral", but knowing them they will protest at their OWN funeral.

While admittedly this guy will most certainly not be missed by many, until now, I've only celebrated one death in my life, and that was of Osama Bin Laden. I don't know if as much of a scumbag as this guy was I can rightly adjust my relative sensation to feel anything but pity for a man who did little more then leave a legacy of negativity in the world that mirrored the darkest parts of American society. No he will not be missed, or mourned by me, but I will choose to rather then celebrate, treat his death as a lesson that we will all leave a legacy in the world in one form or another, and I sure as hell don't want mine to even remotely resemble his.

I'm absolutely delighted about this. He was a horrible person and we're lucky that he's gone.

I know every death is a tragedy because everybody is a loved one to someone.

But then again, sometimes a person's general awfulness outweighs any empathy I can possibly muster. I'm not gonna openly celebrate a death that isn't that of a genocidal monster, buuuut I'm not gonna turn down an invitation to a party.

Who is this guy...
A religious old codger who is more out of touch with reality than most to the point of starting a hate group against basically everyone.

...and why do I care?
You shouldn't. There is a long list of more important things to be concerned with.

Whilst it's unfortunate someone is going (supposedly) to die soon I really don't give many fucks about him and really he wouldn't care even if I did. It's going to be interesting to see what happens to the WBC once he is gone, I doubt they will just give up after coming this far but maybe they will turn things down a little for a while?

This will pretty much kill the WBC I think. They're very tight-knit and rely a lot on the tension in this small group to stay together. It's hard to leave (since there is no one outside you know and that likes you), but everyone who DOES leave really weakens the group. But Phelps has a much more important position there, I can't really see them going on as a cohesive group without him. Which is good.

EDIT: Also, to all those who seriously say "picket his funeral": that makes you as bad as him. No funeral should ever be picketed. There are good reasons why that kind of shit is punishable in most civilized countries.

Despicable as he and his family may be, i can´t wish death on anyone and i don´t really have any reason to want his family to suffer even more for their loss. They might protest at funreals and behave like assholes, but i don´t see any reason why we should stoop to their level. I only want to hope that this might lead to the eventual demise of WBC and their terrible practises.

Welp, he's burning. 'Thank God for hell' indeed - Time to have a nice fried stick of Fred Philips - it'll be like eating a corndog, stick in the ass included.

Seriously speaking though, I hope he's made peace with his maker or says something kind or sweet on his deathbed that will help give those he's made suffer get some closure.
