I have a few friends with benefits. You have to be a certain type of person, and the boundaries need to be established. It helps to be able to compartmentalize hooking up and feelings. I'd be totally cool with being in a relationship, but in the meantime...a girl's got needs.

If you want it, go for it. For me, it'd feel too weird and I'd want a proper relationship. If it was me, it'd feel...wrong to sleep with my female friends.
That's pretty much exactly what I was going to say...

It works for some, which is funny because my ex only days after the break up suggested it...I laughed. I'm not into the whole 'friends with benefits' thing, I don't even find one night stands appealing, coupled with the fact that my ex asked me just days after our break up. Yeah, he's a little fucked in the head.

It works fine as long as you both want the same thing.

It's normally the guy who gets too involved. Girls in general will not agree to being FWB unless that's EXACTLY what they want - sex and no relationship. Guys on the other hand will often happily agree to FWB with a girl they are interested in romantically as it means they get to sleep with them.

Girls are just smarter then us I guess ;).

Glad to hear that worked for you - I had a similar situation except after 2 years we broke up and now don't speak to one another. It sucks as I lost my best friend, but nothing ventured..

They can work, yes - but it requires both parties to be open and honest with each other, and entirely willing to accept that it will never evolve into an emotional relationship. (Unless, of course, both parties feel the same way about one another; which then begs the question, why were they not in a 'conventional' relationship in the first place?)

I would like to say, 'Inevitably, one will fall for the other at some point down the line' - but it's not strictly true. I have known people who have successfully maintained a friends with benefits dynamic until one or the other found a partner with whom they wished to be emotionally attached to as well as sexually/physically.

It all depends on the individual parties involved.

My opinion summed up in a single image:

Well, not really, but I thought it was appropriate.

I hate to sound like an ignorant child... but what exactly is a 'friend with benefits'?

I shall formulate a proper response/opinion once this small confusion has been cleared up :3
Friend + Sex - Steady Relationship = Friends With Benefits
That's pretty much what a girlfriend would be. Your best friend that you can have sex with.
No Chris thats not what a girlfriend is :p

Friends with benefits are people who are in it for the sex nothing more nothing less.

No offense meant, but that might have had more to do with the fact that you were 14 than being in a friends with benefits situation.

Sorry but it just doesn't ring well with me. I mean the idea of casual sex seems amazing and everything but it just would make things awkward in the future, much so when I get into an actual relationship... Doesn't apply if I'm dating said friend though.

The idea of friends with benefits always sounds good in the begging but more often than not ends emotionally. So, i guess it's up to you to decide.

Oddly, I had a chance to be friends with benefits with a girl I was crazy for, but unfortunately I persisted in trying to get her to be my girlfriend and next thing I know she's dating someone else...
Hmm.
Well, anyway, friends with benefits can work but I think it's a bit dangerous since it's quite possible for at least 1 of the pair to develop strong feelings. Of course you can have those types of people (aka sluts) who like 1 night stands and then have a good 1 night stand and simply make it into several night stands with the same other person but not really have any attachement beyond the sex... so it's more like sex friends than friends who have sex. But, uh... yeah.

I think that being "friends with benefits" can work between two people so long as both parties understand that that's all it is. They're just "friends with benefits". Once one party begins to see too much into the relationship, that's when problems can start to arise. At that point the relationship needs to be rethought. Either they have to agree that they're going to move beyond just being "FwB" and move into something closer. Or they should end the relationship before someone gets hurt.

So yeah it can work, but due to the subject matter, both sides have to tread carefully or else things can go very bad, very fast.

Isn't friends with benefits pretty much a relationship without the "burden" of calling it a relationship?
