Oblivion is a bit older than fallout, so fallout is a slightly better in overall presentation,
Fallout 1 and 2 exists aswell as Dark Alliance style Brotherhood of steel. The latter is more of a game. I wonder if you considered these? Not by the same dev but kick the ass of Fo3. New Vegas might trump the lot of em mind

fdbluth good sir you are right. However I argue the vanilla Fallout 3 had a good beginning and a shit end. I am sure most would agree.

Oblivion has aged now and the combat system is one of the main reasons why I don't continue to mod and play this game today. The thought of the world is great but indeed chatting to robotic people, robotic telepathic guards who will chase you through the end of the world surrounded in glitches are also not very attractive. The motivation to go collect rare plants is mostly for combat. Hunting animals is worth little gold or value too. And again the fighting is just awful. Oblivion could use some Mount & Blade combat if you ask me, maybe chuck in a few nice Trophy kill animation too.

But that's not quite getting to your point. Well you spoke of story. Oblivion has a generic fantasy Apocalypse story which the only interesting thing about it is that its large scale. But it has nearly no effect on the world until you reach specific parts of the main quest line. And let me tell you, the primary quest is booooring. The side stories aren't much fun either. The Mages guild was minor fun, the warriors I didn't bother to finish... but the dark brotherhood sparked my interest however!

The Dark Brotherhood allowed me to self motivate. I loved being a daytime adventurer and by night slaughter various targets in unique ways, receiving bonuses when doing it correctly and wearing a dark shrouded cape good for stealth. In addition the way the dark brotherhood approaches you is interesting. I enjoy being a vampire during the time to, so I feed on my victims before I murder them. The Dark Brotherhood gets draggy at several points before you progress but if you endure you will be rewarded with a deeper story and hints of other events going on.

oh and unless you mod the game, the balance is horrible. During early Oblivion years, I focused on stealth. I leveled to 20 mostly by assassination and sneaking to only find a wild pig giving me a fight of the life time lol

I wouldn't. You basically hit all the problems it has. It's too big.
There doesn't feel like a reason to do anything. If making Patrick Stewart's kid the king is all they have to offer, I'll just let the throne go unoccupied.

If you want to give Bethesda another try, just rent Skyrim I guess. It might be better.
If you want another RPG, go for Dragon Age:Origins.

Oblivion is worth it... if you mod the hell out of it on the PC to add more to the gameplay, graphics and overall appearance of the world and the characters in said world.

I'm the opposite of you; I played Morrowind (Oblivion's predecessor if you didn't already know)for a solid month without touching the story, just playing with mods, wandering the map, buying stuff, hitting stuff, discovering places, & more wandering after adding more mods. It was like being on a long hiking vacation with bandits, diseased animals, & zombies.

I always sort of liked murdering all the npcs in Morrowind and Oblivion. That should be a good enough reason to play.

Edit: Also stealing npcs stuff will likely put a grin on your face, especially when they derp around and not even notice their highly valuable prized possessions are missing.

I'm generally pretty anti-fanboy, but if Bethesda was a women I'd want her to have my babies.

So the existance of this thread upsets me.

Make your own motivation. You dont HAVE to do the main quest. My Fighters Guild character wanted to find purpose again, my Knights of the Nine character wanted to repent his sins. My Mage Guild character just wanted to advance himself. My main hero...well, hes motivated from Morrowind (in my head I retconned them to be the same character, long fanfic stuff required to explain, so Ill spare you) so he already felt like he had to save the world when it came up.

I find Oblivion very immersive, though less so than Morrowind, but I embrace the TES style more, so I will just hold that it might not be your particular flavor.

As a Person who has played and 100 % 4 different times on the xbox and 2 times on the computor, know when and where the story and quests get old and boring. I reqonmend playing the main quests in this order; Dark brotherhood, arena, shivering isles, thives guild, fighters guild, knights of the nine, main quest, mages guild, with all minor quests in between the main ones.

Anthoer tip is to really disign your character; give Him or her a race you like, a GOOD name and a back story on why they are in prison and use the weapons/magic/armor they use. I do this on alot of games i play (oblivion, fallout, soul caliber, etc) and it really works. For eg; on the computor i made a breton female but (using constle commands and mods) gave her red eyes, black horns, LARGE amounts of mana and black talons instead of fingers and toes. the reason was; when she was younger she was a attacked by a dremora mage and when it was killed by the city watch some of its blood fell into her open wounds and changed her appearance. "its a role-playing game so lets motherfucking role-play" (yahtzee, new vages)

Also there are some quests that are just really horrible. The mages reconadations, the allies for bruma and the knights of the nine pilgrimage quests are quite long and boring. try to stay away from these quests until you are a high level and have found alot of locations in the world.

sorry about the large post but i'm really passionate about this game, and if even 1 thing i wrote helps someone to injoy the game even just a little bit then thats good enough for me.

Oblivion bored me until I made my own fun.

The best parts of the game are Shivering Isles, some quests with the Daedra Princes and the Dark Brotherhood part. Don't talk to most NPCs, you'll just be freaked out or annoyed at them. That's why I like playing evil. I kill most of them for fun. Including guards. A lot of guards but it's their own fault for having telepathic powers.

So there's your answer. You shouldn't care about anything except your own fun and if you were to follow the main quest, it's just so you can have more fun with the world. Also, shove so many mods in it so that it's not even the same game. Worked for me.

I dislike most of what Bethesda does (sloppy engine use, bad implemented physics, bad main quests) but some of their secondary quests are so interesting they pretty much make the whole game.

After I finished the Dark Brotherhood questline and some other random stuff I got a little bored and decided to mess around with console commands, which systematically ruined my experience with the game.

Because summoning anything you want whenever you want makes the game too easy. That was a lesson learned.

(as you can tell I don't play PC games often)

Play the dark brotherhood questline and shivering isles expansion. Those are the best parts of the game.

Thing is, though, I know absolutely nothing about The Elder Scrolls series, so even when I was starting out and I was given races to choose, I had absolutely no connection, no context as to who I should be. I'm starting out in this world like a newborn babe, but the game expects me to know everything right at the beginning. It gets a bit daunting at first, but the lack of immersion gets me right out, rather than trying to understand just what the hell is going on. I used to read all the codex entries on Mass Effect and Dragon Age, but I just couldn't handle it with Oblivion.

I'd stay away from Daggerfall unless you're really ready to deal with all the setbacks of such an ancient game. I managed to get into it for a while, but it's damn hard and believe me, it's not just the graphics.

Morrowind is probably quite a good choice in your situation. But for god's sake, JOIN A GREAT HOUSE. Preferably Hlaalu or Redoran if you're into lore.

I think it is the NPCs and the awful combat that does it for me.

I like Fallout 3 (not a good fallout game but a good game nonetheless). I like New Vegas (but again I like just about everything Obsidian do, I can live with bugs). I love minecraft. But Oblivion? Meh.
I just can't get into it. It suffers from the main fault of Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, the world looks gorgeous, until you get close to anything. I don't know, is there a mod that completely overhauls the combat, or even better makes the third person view actually work?

I don't know why some open world games just bore me and some are so compelling. Oblivion is just one of those like Assassin's Creed, Red Faction: Guerrilla and the GTA series that just don't do it for me. At least with GTA there is usually a pretty tightly scripted half decent story that I can play through, Oblivion doesn't even have that.

+1. The best part of the game's setting is the great houses. I'll round out the recommendations by advising Telvanni - they're sort of amoral, disinterested sorcerers who live in giant mushrooms. Lots of fun to play as. Plus you get good mods - Tamriel Rebuilt and the various Uvirith mods jump to mind.

this is one of those situations were i just have to say that i disagree
i mean simply from the number of hours i spent playing the game (over 350) it has to be my favourite game of all timeespacialy since the only reason i stopped playing was becouse i upgraded my computer and i had lost my serial number
