And hello to all at the Escapist.

Fussy Eaters. We all know one or two who are fussy about trying anything once or just can't handle a bit of lettuce on their dinner plates. You would often associate fussy eating with children but in actual fact, it happens a lot with adults too, past on from childhood.

I am not talking about those who choose to be vegetarian or those who may have allergic reactions things like nuts.
My 10 year old niece just follows in her mothers footsteps and refuse to eat many things. Even if its Haitian food that my mother cooks, she just wouldn't have a taste. If there is a bean in the rice, she must pick it out bit by bit... or just someone has to cook white rice just for her. However she's a child and may would refuse things now but love it later on in life.

So what are some adult cases, maybe kids/teenagers too, where you have come across fussy eaters or are you one yourself? And does it cause a headache at times when going to a party or restaurant. Parents, share your stories too lol.

Let us know.

I'm a pretty fussy eater, I'm getting better though.
I'm becoming way more open to trying new things. I used to have no tolerance for spicy food but I've been trying it more often and I actually really enjoy curries and chillis now.

For me, it's more about texture than taste.
Mashed things make me feel ill, like properly physically sick.
To me, it's like eating vomit, especially mashed potato, gross.

I don't eat white bread, toast is fine, I don't eat big chunks of onion but I've become more tolerant of onion, mushrooms...

If the texture is slimy or squishy, chances are I won't eat it.

Having meals with me must be a nightmare. XD

hmm, I must say Im quite 'good' with food allthough I do get fussy with a few things.

Fat=I always pick it off of the meat..yes I know it carries taste with it etc etc, but I cant stand it. I know theres enough fat in various foods but thats not the type Im speaking of. Im speaking of fat on meat for instance..a steak, where you can really 'see' it. Donno, I just cant stand the stuff and if theres 'alot' of fat on a steak I order, my gf always compares me to a surgeon. Oddly enough though, I love bacon...haha.

Chicken bones= nope, I cant eat chicken wings/drum sticks properly, the little bones etc, it just..disgusts me and even though I like the meat, I just cant..eat it haha.

Cartilage=just...eww.

Innards= Sorry, dont like the taste.

Think thats about it really, Ive eaten cooked bugs before... I always go after the motto you should try everything atleast twice. so, I do.

I guess the only other thing that gets my stomach churning, I donno why really, are veggy burgers. I cant stand the taste of them.

Edit: to properly answer the op haha.

Extreme case really, is my cousin. He is now 9 years old..and the kid sticks to noodles. Thats literally almost everything he'll eat. My aunt always cooks other stuff etc, but he just doesnt like 'anything' (maybe its the age?) But yeah, I imagine his dream 3 course meal would be something along the lines of

Noodle soup
Cooked noodles with a noodle salad
Noodle..ice cream? (Donno, Im pretty sure thats a thing somewhere)

So thats the most extreme case of picky eating I know personally. Though ofc I have heard of those hardcore vegetarians who try to get their cats and dogs to eat only vegetarian food...that would be even more hardcore imo. They are carnivores...if you want something that eats only plants get a fricking hamster or rabbit.

I'm one. I like my food plain and boring. Too many ingredients puts me off and if I don't know what something is or taste like I generally don't get it. About the most adventures thing I'll eat is prawns. Sometimes causes issues at restaurants where I end staring at the menu going "I have no idea what half of this is even is!". Fish or pasta is generally the default at restaurants.
I exist mainly on bread, pasta and cornflakes.

Funny thing, I was one hell of a fussy eater. My parent oftern told me that when I was little, the only home meal I only eat was fish and rice only! I guess that was true since I have vague memories of it and I even remember one time during lunch time at nurseary school it took me ages to eat my ham sandwich. I suppose this was for the best at the time since my parent are known for cooking alot of food which my brother was chubby back then.

Granted little by little, I did became less fussy and in my preteen/ teen I had a wider taste buds among my peer. Let put it this way, I would had enjoyed (and may had gotten fatten) a hell alot more if Jamie Oliver food revolution had happened at my time at highschool and the high school I was in were selected for his revolution.

In saying so this does make my shrug alot among my fussy former friends and others (like the kids in Jamie Oliver food revolution). Example, they only liked plain cheese or ham topping on pizza (when normally I have other mean or peppers) and I remember a few times that my former mate wanted a plain cheeseburger at McDonald which it took ages for the staff to make his burger which I went with the regular cheeseburger including the pickle inside. Now I think about it, one of their ideal dinner was pasta. Heck they didn't know what a celery is during high school during cooking class!

These days the only time I get fussy is when presented an avocado with salad cream, tomato to a certain extenet (I fine with sauce) and chicken feet.

I know a 40-year-old who refuses to eat vegetables at all, and who also has a child. My mind just can't deal with that.

I like a wide range of things, but I'm a little picky about textures (stuff like tomatoes and squashes). I can't stand cilantro (stink bugs), ginger (death), and I can't be in the same room with someone eating anything involving fish eggs (I have a dot thing). The thought of sushi makes me feel a bit ill.

I am not too fussy, (even though I am what has been referred to as a piskatarian), but I hate bananas. I don't mind the smell, or the taste, but I can't bear the texture. The texture of a banana is enough to make me gag. In terms of other people, I work with someone who point blank refuses to eat vegetables, and won't try any fruit that isn't an apple. I once offered a raspberry to her and you would have thought I was trying to force feed her poison.

I know many people who refuse to even TOUCH a side salad if it comes with a meal, which I find insanely odd. Also, in a way, I find it odd when people refuse to touch the vegetables that accompany a meal. Perhaps it's just me, but I often find the side salad or vegetables to be some of the most tasty and vibrant part of the meal, and thus find anyone who refuses to eat it a tad bland.

Not that I can talk, back when I was a child I used to be so fussy that at one point I would refuse to eat anything other than cereal, pasta or beans, but I guess I just grew out of it.

Oh lord you guys would hate my girlfriend.

Its actually faster to list what she DOES eat rather than listing everything she doesnt.

1.) Instant mashed potatoes (the buttery kind)
2.) Fettuccine Alfredo (Only from Olive Garden or Stouffers tv diner)
3.) Soft Tacos (Only at Taco bell but no lettuce, just meat and sauce)
4.) Macaroni and cheese (All kinds as long as they are cheddar)
5.) Cheese pizza (Cant even pick pepperoni off to eat it)
6.) Chicken and dumplings.
7.) Cooked spaghetti noodles.

And thats it as far as main courses go. I am not even joking. No she doesnt eat vegetables. No she doesnt eat fruit. She doesnt like burgers or anything else you can think of. This is literally it. We pretty much make 2 separate meals every night.

Its Ok though I have been dating her since 7th grade so I am used to it by now. (9 years)

Very specific in her choices I see. It's all fine but has she ever told you the reason for any of these? And no, you don't have to say what they are. No fruits? What about juices and such?

My mates sister, who's thirteen right now, refuses and downright refuses to eat anything other than chips (fries, for our colonial brethren). Its been like this for near 8 years now and doesn't seem like its going anywhere. Eating anything else, aside from one round of toast in the morning, makes her feel sick or vomit.

Whether this is all psychological is anyones guess, but thats the situation shes faced with now.

I know a girl whose diet consists entirely of products with cheese in it. Hot pockets, mac and cheese, grilled cheese, you name it. I fear for her digestive tract.

Yeah, same here.
Just seeing raw tomatoes makes me nauseous, but I love tomato soup.
And I hate vegetables that are too soft, I prefer most of them raw.

Also heterogeneous soups in general that have weird things floating on them.

And warm and cold food touching creeps me out. (This used to be a huge issue for me, these days it just makes me uncomfortable)

And I don't handle spices well.

I got in trouble in elementary school once because the teacher didn't believe even feeling the soup in my mouth made me gag.
I can eat a lot of that stuff but I can't pretend to enjoy it.

(But I'm not as bad as one autistic kid I know who at one point would only eat certain kind of bread...)

I am a bit of a fussy eater, although my reasons do have a grounding in physiology. I have dyspraxia, and one of the ways that can manifest is with over or undersensitivity in certain things, including taste. I'm not bad with vegetables or anything like that, but some strong tastes are too much for me. In particular things with alcohol in them. Even a splash of it in a sauce makes it taste like someone's poured cough syrup into the mix.

But yeah, I eat vegetables and will pretty much try anything, but things with quite strong tastes to them are more likely to provoke a negative response.

*raises hand* I haven't heard of any particularly fussy eaters, but fussy eater right here (in fact, my full-on autistic sister eats so much veggies and other healthy foods she actually gets sick and fat from them. Yes, it's possible). For the foods I dislike, it's more than just "eww, I don't like the taste" or "eww, I know I might like it if I try but I won't" and escalates more to gagging if I eat it (even if I don't know what it is I just ate. It's like my body unconsciously knows).

-Only toppings I like for pizzas is pepperoni, bacon, or sausage (or cheese, if that counts). No veggies. I struggle to even pick them off, not only because it's often layered in cheese, but even upon removal it'll still taste like peppers or onions or whatever.

-Onions suck, and they're everywhere. Doesn't matter the kind or how they're prepared. I hate the taste and texture. Sour cream and onion chips are ok, but actual onions are icky.

-I'll only eat plain rice, preferably white rice, maybe with a bit of butter and salt and pepper. If we're having jerk chicken I'll usually cover it in a bit of sauce.

-Mushrooms also suck. All of them. And spinach. And asparagus. And zucchini. And turnips.

-Sweet peppers are alright as long as they're raw. For some reason I hate cooked peppers. I don't mind a few jalapenos on a sandwich.

-I have a low tolerance for tomatoes. Raw in salads are ok (but I prefer other things) but I hate cooked tomatoes. Chunky tomato sauce (especially if it contains things I mention on this list) I also don't like.

-Can't eat too much citrus or dairy, but that's for medical reasons and not just being finicky. A glass of straight milk makes me sick. Low tolerance for Chinese food too. I might have a limited tolerance for lactose and fat.

-To show I don't discriminate against greens, I hate ham. Unless it's bacon, I'm not a huge pig meat fan. I don't eat a lot of organ meats either.

To set the record straight, I do eat veggies. I love broccoli, I make simple salads on a regular basis, green beans are alright (though other beans I tend to dislike), corn is great in the summer, homemade sweet potato fries are alright (though I'm not a fan of them raw), lots of good veggies, just I can't escape the ones I don't like.

I hate soups and stews. It's just so...so...boring. Stews are normally brown and just a bunch of bland vegetables and meat stirred together. It's so unappealing to look at, smell, and taste. I hated it when my mother would make stew. I would smell it in the house and just know that I was not going to enjoy dinner at all. Thank goodness I can choose what I want to eat myself now...

I also don't like steak. Apparently that's blasphemy, but I don't care. Steak is, again, boring and bland. "Here's a slab of meat. Here's some tangy sauce. Enjoy."

Oh good, brown on more brown.

When I was younger, the only way I could eat steak was with ranch dressing. YES RANCH DRESSING. People thought I was psychotic.

I guess I'm just a visual eater...if it doesn't look appealing with some color, I probably won't eat it. It also has to smell REALLY good, and at least have some type of cheese on it.

I dunno...I can't eat ice cream when it's REALLY hot? Weird, right? Some people commonly think "Oh, it's hot. I'll eat some cold ice cream." But if I do that I actually feel very sick. Pretty much that way with dairy in general.

I saw the title and was like 'Yes, this is the thread for me!' How disappointing :(

However, on topic, I used to be really fussy eater as a kid. I don't even remember how much stuff there was I did not want to eat. For some reason I grew out of that and now I'm willing to try almost anything food wise.

I'm a terrible eater. I hate trying new things, and mostly stick to the plainest possible of any kind of food (for example I usually have a cheese and tomato pizza with nothing else on it)
My other problem is I don't eat proper meat, like steaks, chops, fillets etc. But I'm fine eating things like burgers.
