Future Street Fighters should follow Super Street Fighter 4's example when it comes to unlockables.

To be specific, I applaud SSF4 for not having any unlockable characters.

Call it nitpicking, but I find it pretty lame that basic characters like Cammy and Sakura were locked. They weren't boss characters, so why bother?

Everyone being available in SSF4 is a major improvement.

You've not played the game enough me thinks... There's still a few unlockable characters in the game, like Seth and Akuma (if I remember correctly)

So you want everything handed to you straight from the start? What's the to work towards then? Street Fighter isn't exactly a story driven game, so the only reason to play through it is:
A) To get better skills.
B) To unlock better characters.

It's something to drive you to playing the game, and something to show that you're accomplished. Just because you have to work to get something doesn't mean it's a bad system.

So you think it's a bad thing that SSF4 has no unlockable characters?
Well, I just rented it a while back but I spent a good amount of time with my friend to unlock the characters. It's something that drives you forward to beat it. It drove me to beat everyone's story so I could get a chance to play as the others. The unlockables they had were sufficient for me though.

I'm inevitably thinking about why I still love Street Fighter 2 despite it having had no unlockables, and I'm pretty sure it's just because it was enjoyable to play.

There was still something to accomplish in completion of the hardest difficulty, which took me a long time to finally beat.

I hated the process of unlocking characters in SF4. I found that it kind of missed the point; in order to get access to half the game I paid for, I have to beat the game something like 10 times. I want to try the characters, find out which I like the most, then start trying to beat Arcade mode with them. Instead I sit for a few tedious hours doing crouch-kicks against the Very Easy AI, because it'll get me that character I want to try as fast as possible.

I think whether it's a good idea or not depends on how you prefer to approach a game, but I wish it was at least optional. The general lack of unlock codes nowadays is unfortunate.

*stamps out flames*

Knowing what's in a game before buying it is normal; "if not for the internet..." is an irrelevant point because we do have the internet, as you've noticed.

I think unlockables are a great idea. SSBB did it terribly what with having requirements like "Play for ten hours" or whatever inane shit. Most fighting games usually just have it wanting you to beat it with a character, beat it one a certain difficulty or beat it without getting killed or something. Not always but usually and since most story modes aren't long it's not like it's hard. Having EVERYTHING unlocked from the start just isn't much fun.
Actually, those are the Smash Brothers alternate unlocking methods, for people who don't want to beat Classic in under 12 minutes (Captain Falcon), complete all five levels of target test (Lucario), reflect ten projectiles (Ness), and the like.

In other words, "play 100 matches" is more for people who don't care about single player (including Subspace Emissary, which is how I unlocked everyone) or who can't complete the requirements. Naruto: Clash of Ninja Revolution has a similar system.

I think unlockables are fun.

When MvC2 came out on the 360 and PS3 with everyone available, I was a bit disheartened, IMO, it offers challenge.

what are you talking about, you can unlock Shin Akuma by dipping your disc in water. Trust me I'm a doctor.

But seriously we still have to unlock the colors and taunts, so there will still be some grinding :/ Trials are like school, you never remember everything except the main combos for each character.

I fully agree with the OP here. Locking characters in fighting games is a rather asinine feature that really never should have been introduced. I've had had SFIV for quite some time now and I still can't unlock Gouken because the requirements to do so are bat shit insane.

http://faqs.ign.com/articles/957/957058p1.html
I was gonna list them here, but they are so freaking complex that providing a link to them was much easier.

Now I have managed to unlock everyone else, except Seth who can't be unlocked until you unlock Gouken. I suppose this wouldn't be much of a problem if you have a 99th degree black belt in SF, but for us normal people it's a bit of pain in the ass.
Play Zangief and set the round to one win 99 seconds, on easiest mode. Make your first 3 matches Perfects with the Lariat (its very easy just lariat as soon as they get up. Make your next 3 matches ultra combo wins by Focus Attack Dash Cancelling their moves, and killing them with ultra. then beat seth and Gouken after.

It was made with online play in mind :/ So yes give us all the characters to play online.

And holy crap triple post. I'm sorry but I just needta quote!

And beating the ENTIRE subspace emissary to unlock sonic is a bit rediculous. Beating classic or arcade isn't a problem, it's short and doable if you have a few minutes to spare. Subspace emissary takes forever and is boring as all hell. SSBB is just an example of terrible unlocking conditions I used. If you're going to lock characters don't make them completely retarded. But on a whole I like 'unlockable characters' as an idea because I like being rewarded like a retarded seal for pressing buttons.
If you don't want to play SSE to unlock Sonic, just beat Classic ten times. You're already getting a head start by unlocking Captain Falcon, Ganondorf, Marth, and Luigi, and presumably you'd want to play through the game with more than one character.

Seriously, the only characters who require SSE are Jigglypuff and Toon Link, and for those, you have the alternate method (which you're already going to be using to unlock various stages, music, and Snake). I don't quite get what you're complaining about.
