You know. I stopped giving a damn about HL3 about 4 years ago. If it ever comes the expectations will be similar to those surrounding DNF, and the disappointment probably similar. Unless the game would really revolutionize the first person shooter gameplay, which I highly doubt seeing what Valve does with games recently, the rumours aren't worth the attention.

It would be better for everyone involved if They would just make some new IP.

Valve has done the impossible before and they could very well do it again. I was surprised to see Half Life 2 being just as innovative as the first Half Life and it took them more than five years to do that.

Half Life 3, or Episode 3, will either revolutionize the gaming industry again or not come at all. That's why I love Valve.

HL3 won't be amazing. I can't wait for it, but its in the same way I can't wait to go get a steak bake from greggs. Its a damn good steak bake - But in the grand scheme of things hardly revolutionary. You put the steak in the gravy in the pastry, and good times are had, just like you put the booleet in the combeens in the excellent narrative, the formula is held.

HL2 didn't really have that much of an impact on industry as first part. There was no real innovation in it either, it was solid continuation with improved engine and physics gun. And it's been over 7 years ago now. Since then we had L4D2 and Portal2, neither of those really were all that amazing, solid, but not amazing.

Thing is every studio runs out of the juice at some point, and with how long either ep3 or HL3 takes I have trouble seeing how it can really not be disappointing if it ever comes out. Hence I say - it's better for everyone if they would just come up with fresh idea that could really bring fresh air rather than constantly tease their fanbase with something that might never actually even exist.

Which of their games is renowned for being one of the best (if not the most skill requiring) mp shooters of all time?

It sure as hell ain't half life. If you can look me in the face and say that it doesn't warrant an update every ten years, then il go and make you a nice living in dream world hat for you to wear because your obviously on another plane of existence.

Footnote: it will happen when it happens, putting all this energy and hype into something they have not even mentioned in a number of years is only harming yourselves. Go outside, have a walk, talk to a pretty stranger, i guaranty it will be more fun than waiting the next few years for a trickle of information, then having a hissy fit when the official source reiterates the fact they have announced nothing.

CS:S looks nice and not a game that requires a overhaul.
I wouldn't mind it so much if Valve at least confirms a date for EP3 (even if they end up requiring more time to finish it)

Personally, I dont think Valve is going to announce any Half Life stuff at the VGAs, but my oh my, I WANT TO BELIEVE. It would be awesome.

I'm getting annoyed that people still think it's going to happen. It's been seven years since Half-Life 2 first came out, four years since Episode 2 came out. Get over it. Yes, Valve makes great games, yes, Half-Life 2 is an amazing story-driven shooter. No, Episode 3/Half-Life 3 would never be able to live up to the expectations all the fans have of it now. There is so much hype behind it that even if it were literally the greatest game ever to be conceived (meaning no game even in the future would be able to surpass it), it still wouldn't be good enough for the fans.

People are only impatient because ep2 ended with a cliffhanger and want the goddamn story to end alread

I'm not annoyed at anyone. Valve didn't do anything, it was the fans who hyped this up so much. It's normal for Valve not to talk about a game for a long time. They didn't talk about hl2 for a very long time, with good reason when you look at what was in the leaked version back then.
They have not decided to talk about it and constantly asking about hl3 won't make them suddenly say something. It's not like they don't know how much we fans want it, they just have their reasons.
They'll talk when they will be ready to talk, it's as easy as that.
