Game based movies that could actually work?

In the vain of reaching out to the new cash cow of the "casual gamer" I suggest something that will hopefully make casual gamers feel more accepted.
FarmVille: The Movie
It's shot in 120, 60 second segments and entrance will be free (with advertising) but you will have the option of paying $40 to watch the movie all at once in a single go, as well as receiving an exclusive in game item code for a everlasting manure pile.

Personally, i would most want to see a Halo movie. Oh can you imagine, a Halo movie made with the same technology as they used for Avatar, all of the beautiful enviroments rended like that.All that stunning scenery, bold colours and awesome energy effects. And, of course, we would get David Hayter to be master chief.
Well, Bioshock for one, that would be a really neat one to see
I would absolutyly love to see an Metal Gear Solid movie, providing it is made with all of the inside jokes built in, like a box scene, and they have to have at least one of those radio chat scenes to. That, and David Hayter is going to have to balance playing snake and master chief.
A real Starcraft movie that doesn't suck would be great

Games just don't translate into movies well. Games are made to last hours and hours and require a level of audience participation movies simply can't match (DOOM, Resident Evil). Movies on the other hand, are purely about the story and messages behind it. Movies require a continuity and forward flow that often makes games less desirable (MGS4). I'm sure there was an article or two in The Escapist somewhere saying exactly that...
This is why movies based on games tended to suck (with a few notable exceptions), and vice versa (again, with notable exceptions mostly from the SNES era).
That being said, I'd like to toss Yars Revenge in for movie adaptation. It was one of the first games to actually have a plot, and the potential for social commentary is enormous. (why not? they're making a Space Invaders movie... *shudder*)
Also, if they can find a way to distill it down, Final Fantasy VI could make a neat movie. Although that would probably work better as a Sci-Fi Channel movie series (I refuse to use its new moniker). Yeah... never mind, they'll just mess it up.

There is/was plans for that and I wouldn't mind on the condition is was entirely CGI work and the studio that made the games were in constant contact for advice. Because Kratos' moves just don't translate well to real life as far as I can see.[/quote]cavekeeper said:

For one, many video games are a dumbed-down, retarded version of something else. Halo is just a non-license version of a Starship Troopers video game. While that movie wasn't all that good, a Halo film will inevitably be compared to it and likely would be found lacking in comparison.

Hollywood, however, has a knack for not 'getting' a property they purchase the film rights. I understand a script for a Spider-man movie was floating around in the early 90's where Spider-man was not a superhero but a hideous half man/half spider monster. So they tend to make changes, significant ones to the point that the property is unrecognizable.
The real problem is budget and talent.
Really talented filmmakers prefer to make their own stories, not rehash someone else's. So all you're going to get is hack and maybe people with some talent who are just using this gig to pay the rent while they try to get the cash they need to make their 'real' movie.
Studios are reluctant to put significant capital into a project that won't make it back. Video game concepts often require an enormous budget what with all the pretty lights and effects and whatever, but the projects usually don't get that much coin, so they're low budget affair. this could work if the makers were talented or at least into the project, but as I just said, that is usually not the case. So it comes out looking cheap.
I suppose the ultimate problem with video game movies is that it's difficult to make a good movie in the first place. This is why most movies are shit. Video game movies do seem to have the deck stacked against them for the reasons above. In the end, wouldn't enjoying the game be enough?
