I try to make my characters look like me, but I have yet to find a character creation tool that has actually enough depth to make it look like me.

I used to do that, in RPGs name the characters after myself and family. Then I just kinda decided to default names. In Morrowind-type games there might be the odd time I make myself, otherwise I just go for whatever other adventurer I can think of.

I try, sometimes. I managed to make my third Oblivion character look like an extremely buff version of me, which was pretty cool.

Most of the time, though, I just make them look how I wish I looked.

I usualy make my characters female, maybe it's because I wish I was female.
You know, it's amazing what they're doing with hormones and surgery these days for wish fulfillment.

I generally try to make an approximation of me to start out, but then I'll find dreadlocks or some thing and add that, then something else, then another thing, ad nausea, until I end up with me with blue dreads, pointy goatee, scars, and everything else cool which looks nothing like me.
Hey, I've made a character with blue dreads and a goatee!

It's a bit complicated, I'm fine being male though.

Yeah, I do that sort of thing all the time. I generally don't really like playing as a likeness of myself, though. I think real life me is pretty boring so I like to mix things up a bit.

I mean, when I play L4D I always pick Louis. I'm far from a bald snazzy-looking black man. It's just cool to play as someone that is basically the polar opposite of me.

Spent ages trying to get my Fallout 3 character to be basically an exact likeness of myself, only to coat him in power armour.

apart from making them relatively skinny, my characters bear no likeness to me. i just make 'em look good.

I almost never do that. (games often don't have the items needed to make someone so damn boring and depressing.)

Sometimes, depends on what options are available. Love how you can change your hairstyle in Fallout 3. When I dyed my hair deep purple I changed my characters hair in the game aswell. There may be an element or narcissism about that...

For me, character design and development is a partial way of life. It comes with the job. I prefer not to involve my actual looks or personalities into the designs of any character unless specified to do so.

When creating a character or avatar for myself; I go with the complete idealistic package, the way I wish I could look. My avatar Maileigh Grainger in Second Life is a terrific example!

To truly make a character in my own image, I would need to customize the voice and make it nice and deep. Most games that let you customize your character have silent protagonists.

The only game I have ever made a likeness of me was The Sims. That is when I discovered that The Sims is only fun if you make your character's life a living hell. There is just something satisfying about locking a guy in a small room with no doors and watching him yell out in helplessness as he passes out in his own blue pee stains.

Somehow it seems to make the game more fun when it seems like you are putting yourself in the story.

I usually make characters that looks like a much more improved version of me. Then I add weird features since I can't resist; I mean, who hasn't tried using neon green hair color?

Fallout 3 is the only game where I played as a dude, probably because his blue messy hairstyle was eyecandy for me. I found it funny when my mom passed by and said that my character was good looking, I didn't know she was into neon colors...

You've just hit on exactly why I don't create myself in that game. My wife did that in her Sims 2 neighborhood, and our children in-game frightened her a bit. She's cute, I'm not bad looking, but the kids...yikes.
