Game genres you don't understand

Everyone has a genre they don't understand what's so great about it and so it doesn't bring any interest.

Personally mine are RTS, Sports, scrolling shoot em ups and Fighting games.

I love strategy games but I don't get RTS because it feels like real time Chess to me: muddled and confusing. I've heard Endwar is pretty cool but it doesn't spark any interest in me.

Sports games I don't think I will ever get because I'm not a hardened fan of any sport.

Fighting games are imperceptible to me because I will never get used to the lengthy combos that are required. The only fighter I've been into recently is Soul Calibur 4 which is kind of a noobish fighter but still entertaining.

Side scrolling shoot em ups where your little spaceship shoots a billion bullets on the screen while a billion enemies flood the screen and return fire with a billion bullets don't really interest me that much because they are mostly for highscore gamers and imo these games are only fit for mobile phones.

So what are the genres you don't get?

(Also you can try and convince me why I should try some of the ones above.)

MMORPG's,
I played one once, it felt like a second job, except at this one nobody would talk to me and it was nearly impossible to get anything done.

"Lewt" RPG's (Diablo 2, Too Human),
I play RPG's for the story or the fun battles, definately not so I can get the best rare set in the game. I just don't understand the push for "Epic Lewts"

Simulators as in, Flight simulator, Train simulator etc
Don't get it and won't ever.

Granted I like Need for Speed, but that's not realistic a bit.

I can actually explain that one for you. It may seem muddled to you, but for those of us that pretty regularly play RTSes it all makes a lot more sense. It's like the first time you jump into Civilization. You have no damn idea what's going on. Then you get better and things start making sense, and then all of a sudden you start seeing the numbers behind everything. Or in the case of Dorf Fortress, the things behind the numbers.

As for me, Sports. I've always felt if you're going to play a sports game, just grabs friends and go play sports outside. Always more satisfying, at least to me. Though I can see the appeal in the more unrealistic ones, and I freaking love Blood Bowl.

Fighting and Japanese novel-style games. Also, Anime in general!

EDIT: Oh, and JRPGs, typically a slightly more advanced form of the novel-game.

EDIT2: Fighting games just seems like either a) Button mash until you get bored, or b) learn a million different keystrokes that result in special moves.

Novel/JRPGs just seen to have cutscenes with little or no real gameplay, and hence seen more like poorly written movies to me.

Sports games. I don't know how you can enjoy playing these games. I mean you can play them outside with your friends and then you don't have to pay 60 dollars.

You mean like the metagame? it's like that in most strategy. Maybe I don't have very good multi-tasking skills lol.

MMORPGs are one that I've never understood. However I'm the first so admit that I've never tried them because I have an addictive personality, so incase I do like it I would find it difficult to stop.
RTS's are annoying, I love them to bits - ever since C&C and others. However I buy the new ones and simply get bored with them very quickly, has anyone else found the newer RTS's to be boring in comparison due to the overly complicated graphics and number of abilites that everyone has. Build trees don't annoy me.
Simulators I don't understand either, although I loved Rollercoaster Tycoon... ah the hours I wasted making a rollercoaster that I would personally love but all of the people called 'too scary'.

Well, multi-tasking skills are needed for a lot of RTSes what with the love of microstrategy. But basically, yeah. Metagaming, understanding what does what in comparison to other things and if not remembering the exact units, remembering basic unit types in comparison to others. Once you speak THE MACHINE CODE it all starts making a lot more sense why people do what.

ROFLMAO

This comment is EPIC.

You, sir, quite possibly might have just won the internetz.

For me, the only type of games I really don't understand are those "Petz" games, complete with misspelled words in title. Just get a real pet. Jeez.

I don't understand football games. Gamers generally aren't interested in football, and footballers aren't interested in games.
Plus sport and video games go together like chalk and cheese, I'd much rather be outside playing it for real.

Gotta agree. I have tried time and again to like them. The last one I touched was Lost Odyssey for the 360. I made it through the first disc because I was bored. But the moment disc 2 loaded up, my shoulders sort of slumped forward and I said "no f***ing way."

The stories are atrociously cliched, hopelessly convoluted and very very cheesy. And yes, this goes even for the latest instalments in the Final Fantasy franchise. I own both a PS3 and a 360 and I don't think I'll be picking it up for either system.

I also have a hard time understanding how people can dedicate months of their lives to playing games like World of Warcraft, where you're paying someone for the privilege of toiling in a digital slave pit.

I love Western RPGs - enjoying Fallout 3 and Fable 2 right now - along with the odd shooter fest like Call of Duty 4. I've also got a major soft spot for Epic and their goofy, dumb, but incredibly fun Gears of War series.

There's actually no game genre I haven't enjoyed at one point or another - though my preference generally is for RPGs, fighting games (even though I suck), and adventures or platformers. I'm not a huge fan of RTS', either, but then again, I play games more to relieve stress than for competition.

I love to play computer football games. But I'd never play real football; I don't like actually getting tackled. Golf is too expensive in real life, but golf games are fun.

Pretty simple, really.

I don't understand sports management sims. I mean, why would you care? At least in proper strategy games you get to see your minions destroy things.

Racing games that don't have machine guns or some kind of weaponry in them. I just don't follow the appeal if there isn't the occasional missile involved.

That is why racers like wipeout, F-Zero, and mario kart are a boat load of awesome and exceptions to it. I hate racing games as well that are just well...normal.

I never liked sports games either...bores the shit out of me.

Only 2 genres that I can't ever enjoy aside from the exempted racing games.
